SEASON GUIDE 2016

From the Principal I am delighted to welcome everyone to the 2016 football season and I especially welcome those students and players who are commencing our football programme for the first time. Over 400 students choose to play football at and we are very fortunate to have the skills, commitment, dedication and energy of Mr Barry Rowlings and Mr Darren Lowe together with the Head of Sport Mr Geoff Miles and the Teacher-in-Charge Mr Matthew Sparks and I wish them well for the season to come. Pre-season training has commenced across both campuses with up to 70 boys from Years 10-12 turning up for these early morning sessions. With the “ASH” Cup and the traditional Term 1 Football camp approaching, the aim is to have the 1stXVIII ready to face Scotch College for Round 1 to be held on Saturday, 16 April (at Scotch College). One of the highlights of 2015 was the match between Year 12 girls from Caulfield and Wheelers Hill Campuses. The game was played at Wheelers Hill in fantastic spirit, with the Caulfield girls prevailing in a contest played in excellent spirit. Participants and supporters enjoyed the match which has become a significant event on the CGS sporting calendar. There have also been very strong performances from the cross- campus Year 9 and 10 teams together with the emergence of some very promising young footballers in Year 7 and 8 across both campuses. The future is indeed looking very bright. I am again looking forward to supporting our football teams throughout 2016 and I also look forward to meeting many parents, students, past students and supporters as we all support our current and past students in the great game of Australian Football. I also wish to acknowledge the work done by our grounds staff to ensure that the ovals are in the best possible condition and also the medical team who look after the players. A particular highlight for the School football community in 2015 was having both (Hawthorn) and () playing in the AFL Grand Final. 2015 also saw Tom Phillips (class of 2014) drafted to Collingwood and we wish Tom a successful career at the highest level. I warmly commend the efforts of the Kellaway Club led by its President John Iozzi for all the work it does to enhance the football program at the School and I would encourage all footballing parents to become involved in this active parent support group. The School values its relationship with the Caulfield Grammarians Football Club (CGFC) which is the natural football home of boys who wish to continue playing with their mates beyond Year 12. I know that CGFC is focused on building a future for young footballers from both secondary campuses who have completed their schooling. As we move into the 2016 season I wish everyone all the very best and I know that Caulfield Grammar School will continue to be proudly represented. Good luck everyone. Reverend Andrew P. Syme

Girls Football rooms, attempting to make a louder roar than the Wheelers team to scare our opponents. Training kicked off on an unconventional After an intimidating/semi-uncoordinated Friday afternoon, testing the girl’s commitment warm-up from each campus, captains were to the team from day one. As the team reduced selected and the siren sounded, commencing in numbers the training became more intense. the game. There were an equal number of Cold, dark, early mornings became a ritual girls on the bench as there was on the field, for the team and as game day loomed large leading to a wicked cheer squad for each these training sessions were instrumental to team. Each goal meant the competition got our performance. Slowly we bonded as a team fiercer and slowly as Caulfield’s goals started rather than a group of individuals. Lucas Grigg — 1995-2015 In August 2015 the Caulfield Grammar School community lost one of its own, as Lucas Grigg lost his prolonged battle with cancer. Lucas played football throughout his time at school. Although being one of the shorter players in his teams, he would always be at the bottom of the pack and would not flinch when going up against someone twice his size. After leaving school in 2013 Lucas continued his football career at CGFC where he became renowned for his forward pressure in the Under 19s side, He played nearly every game in 2014. Unfortunately, Lucas wasn’t able to join us for most of the 2015 season, with his health deteriorating quickly. When we lost Lucas on the 16th of August last year, the CGS football and broader community were deeply saddened. Subsequently hundreds of people packed the Cripps Centre for a celebration of his life. Every game the Under 19s side played throughout our finals campaign, we played with him in our minds, aiming to exhibit half as much courage as he did, wishing that he could’ve been with us to experience the amazing season it turned out to be. Griggy you’ll always be remembered by CGFC and the wider Caulfield Grammar community. Chris Bold, winner of CGFC’s Under 19 Lucas Grigg Award for courage

(The CGFC Committee resolved to remember Lucas by establishing a new award for the Under 19s – the Lucas Grigg Award for Courage. It was fitting that the inaugural winner of this award was Chris Bold, one of Lucas’ best mates.)

CGS Year 10A – 2015 Report The 2015 10A’s coached by Mr Greg Meredith enjoyed an outstanding year with one loss (after the siren) following on from 2014 in which they were undefeated. This tight knit group has lost only 2 games in three years. Clearly the boys love playing together and are looking forward to making the next step into senior ranks. Mr Meredith had this to say about the squad “over the course of the 2015 season five Year 10 footballers regularly played in the 1st XVIII which allowed other players to step in to more senior and central positions. It was a pleasure to watch these players develop and take on leadership roles. We all look forward to watching the group continue to progress with their football”. Trent Mynott

Kyle Smale Award Recent Draftees yet to debut The Kyle Smale Trophy was struck in 2004 following Kyle’s tragic passing in a car accident soon after he finished his final School year at Caulfield Grammar. He was a young man who personified courage and persistence in sport and studies during his time at the School. The Trophy is presented to the First XVIII footballer who typifies the qualities displayed by Kyle both on the field and in training. A selfless, team oriented attitude is vital for the player who secures the trophy. Perhaps not the best player in the team receives this trophy but he will undoubtedly be one of the first and most important players selected each week. The CGS First XVIII Captain always wears the number 3 jumper, the same as that worn by Kyle.

Caulfield Grammarians and the VFL/AFL There is a long history of Caulfield Grammarians in the VFL/AFL with over 50 Grammarians having played at the elite level. Interesting facts include: • In 2015 three CGS players made their AFL debut being , Daniel McKenzie and Lukas Webb. For Dan and Lukas it took only one year to make their debuts but Luke’s 6 year wait to play at the highest levels is one of football’s great stories of persistence. Similarly Callum Sinclair endured a horrendous run of injuries before establishing himself in the West Coast Eagles team culminating in the 2015 AFL Grand Final. • The player who has played most games is Chris Judd (279) and most goals is also Chris Judd (228) followed by Ron Evans (209) the former Essendon and AFL President. Ron headed the VFL goalkicking list in 1959 and 1960. • Frank Langley was best on ground in Melbourne’s 1900 Premiership. Other premiership players include Les White (Essendon 1912), Dean Anderson (Hawthorn 1989 & 1991) and Chris Judd (Eagles 2006). Taylor Duryea is CGS’s latest dual premiership player (Hawthorn 2014 and 2015). Will Taylor and the Hawks achieve the ‘three-peat’ in 2016? • Brownlow Medallists have been John Schultz in 1960 and Chris Judd in 2004 and 2010. • Schultz played 24 games for Victoria (and was an All Australian in 1961). Other players to represent Victoria were Jim Taylor, Lance Wilkinson, Stephen Newport, Dean Anderson, Ron Evans and . • The first Caulfield Grammarian to play VFL football was Stanley Reid (1896-1897) who played two seasons with Fitzroy before serving in the Boer war where he was killed.

Josh Homann, Simon Williams, Stuart Wigney It is evident that one of the key aspects we need to expand on is our support-base. We need to enhance its diversity and attract new sponsors. Our existing sponsors have been fantastic: exceptionally loyal and giving. However, to create sustained success, new sponsors need to be found, and new ways to involve people need to be identified. Work is already underway in these areas. One of the new tools CGFC now has at its disposal is the Electronic Scoreboard, which is installed and operational. This venture will allow the Club to display our sponsors names Luke Price, Andrew Spittal, Simon Widjaja throughout our home games, in addition to

The ASH Cup Every year since 1979, the CGS 1st XVIII and the CGFC Under 19 teams have played off in a pre-season practice match for the ASH Cup, named after Rev. Angas Spooner Holmes (“ASH”) who CGFC Under 19 team was Headmaster of CGS from 1977 to 1992 and regarded sport as a vital component in the School’s curriculum. The 2016 ASH Cup was held on April 5th at CGFC’s Glenhuntly Oval in balmy conditions on the beautifully manicured surface. Respective coaches Ben Frigge filling in for Darren Lowe (School) and Josh McCahon (CGFC) were pleased to have a good hit-out leading into the forthcoming first round of APS and VAFA matches. The match was played competitively and in CGS Senior team great spirit as the recent schoolboys took on this year’s batch of senior CGS players. The hard fought contest was ultimately won by the School boys whose superior fitness and finishing skills were just too much for the valiant Grammarians. The post match presentation saw Barry Rowlings and CGFC President Peter Small commend the boys on their efforts and wishing all Caulfield teams a successful season.
