It is much better than the previous ...By GinnyUsing some of Margery Allingham's characters and imagining a story around them, Mike Ripley has come up with a very good book. It is much better than the previous book where he used notes and a beginning fashioned from something that Youngman Carter (Mrs. Allingham's widower) created. I'm still confused about the fox (although there is one in the story) and the plot is a bit slight but I enjoyed the book. On principle I do not enjoy follow on books "in the style of" or "finishing off a manuscript" but Mr. Ripley has come up with a winner. I look forward to the next book as I believe he has an agreement to write three "Allingham" books...... Good job!1 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Marjorie Allingham was one of the finest writers of mystery fiction of the 20th centuryBy Samuel D. UretskyMarjorie Allingham was one of the finest writers of mystery fiction of the 20th century. Her work was noted for the precision of its writing. She was quoted as saying "I write everything three times, once to get it on paper, once to get it right, and once to make it sound as if I just thought of it." Her best known series hero, Albert Campion, ranged through a variety of incarnations, at times the deputy adventurer, at times the , and at times simply a name included in the book in order to sell a few more copies. In fact, the works that are most highly regarded, "Tiger in the Smoke" and "Tether's End" are those with perhaps the least of Mr. Campion. After Ms. Allingham's death, the series was continued by her widower, Philip Youngman Carter, and now the series has been extended by Mike Ripley. This is the second of Mr. Ripley's works, and is of high quality, although perhaps not quite as good as his earlier "Mr. Campion's Farewell" or the best of Ms. Allingham's works (note, however, that not everybody agrees on which of Ms. Allingham's works are the best .and they vary so widely that there's a lot of room for discussion.) Mr. Ripley focuses largely on Mr. Capmpion's son and daughter in law, but also finds room for Lady Amanda, Albert's brilliant wife, who was never adequately represented in the works of either Ms. Allingham or Mr. Carter. Mr. Campion's gentleman's gentleman, Lugg, is also represented. Unfortunately, the effect is to give Mr.. Campion less attention than he deserves. For those of us who follow the series, reading this book is essentially a no-brainer. For readers of classic British mysteries, it's good, but perhaps not quite up to the best of either Ms. Allingham or the Martha Grimes Richard Jury series.0 of 1 people found the following review helpful. The Campion legacy lives on.By Ann W. AbernathyI have read every Campion novel from Allingham to Youngman Carter and now to Ripley. The Ripley continuation holds up. This title is more young Rupert than senior Albert, but the familiar Lugg and wise and charming Lady Amanda hold their own. Ripley has updated the stories but not at the expense of the word-play and humor we expect from Campion and company. I hope he continues with the series.BTW, if you have not read any of Ripley's "Angel" series, I highly recommend them.

This brand-new novel featuring Margery Allinghamrsquo;s Mr Campion recaptures the Golden Age of British .The Danish Ambassador has requested Albert Campionrsquo;s help on lsquo;a delicate family matterrsquo;. Hersquo;s very concerned about his eighteen-year-old daughter, who has formed an attachment to a most unsuitable young man. Recruiting his unemployed actor son, Rupert, to keep an eye on Frank Tate, the young man in question, Mr Campion notes some decidedly odd behaviour on the part of the up-and-coming photographer. Before he can act on the matter, however, both the Ambassadorrsquo;s daughter and her beau disappear without trace. Then a body is discovered in a lagoon. With appearances from all of Margery Allinghamrsquo;s regular characters, from Campionrsquo;s former manservant Lugg, to his wife Lady Amanda Fitton and others, this witty and elegant mystery is sure to delight Allinghamrsquo;s many fans. The dialogue is sharp and witty, the observation keen, and the climax is thrilling and eerily atmospheric. ldquo;Part village cosy, part spy thriller, part murder mystery, and part Oscar Wildendash;like farce" (Booklist)"Ripley maintains a light touch in the service of an intricate mystery that will please Allingham devotees and newcomers alike" (Publishers Weekly Starred )About the AuthorMike Ripley is the two-time winner of the Crime Writersrsquo; Last Laugh award, and the author of several thrillers and historical novels. He writes a hugely respected monthly review column for Shots Magazine entitled getting Away with Murder. Philip Youngman Carter was Margery Allinghamrsquo;s artist husband and a novelist in his own right.
