SUNDAY, APRIL 12, 2020 Resurrection of Our Lord/Easter Day

ABOUT TODAY’S THEME…“ This is the day the Lord has made! Christ is risen, and through him all creation is made new! Indeed, “God shows no partiality” (Acts 10:34): Christ’s resurrection truly brings life to everyone. We sing hymns of praise, gather around sacred words, and proclaim God’s faithfulness, power, and love in the feast of holy communion. With the women at the tomb, we are astonished, elated, and grateful. We depart with joy to proclaim the good news of God’s endless love.

A WORD ON THE READINGS…The First Lesson: Peter’s sermon, delivered at the home of Cornelius, a Roman army officer, is a summary of the essential message of Christianity: Everyone who believes in Jesus, whose life, death, and resurrection fulfilled the words of the prophets, “receives forgiveness of sins through his name.” The Second Lesson: Easter means new life for us as it first meant new life for Christ. His resurrection reshapes the entire focus and motivation for our lives since we are now hidden with the risen Christ in God. The Gospel Lesson: Sorrow gives way to “fear and great joy” when two women are sent by an angel to proclaim the good news: Jesus is risen!

MILESTONE MINISTRY AT GRACE At Grace we celebrate milestones. Milestones are designed to connect significant oc- casions in people’s lives with their ongoing journey of faith. A Milestone Moment brings family, friends, and congregations together to mark a special time in their lives and acknowledge and affirm God’s presence in their midst. It is a tool to connect home and church in the child and family’s faith life. In addition to naming (the occa- sion), blessing (the person) and gifting (the gift), we send along an “At Home” sheet to reinforce the milestone with caring conversation.

WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

Pastor: On this most holy morning the church keeps vigil, awaiting the glorious resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ. The Apostle teaches us that by baptism we were buried with Christ in order that, as Christ was raised from the dead in the splendor of the Father, so we should set our feet on the new path of life. Now that the sacrifices of Lent are over, let us renew the promises made at our own baptisms.

AFFIRMATION OF BAPTISM P: Do you renounce all the forces of evil, the devil, and all his empty promises? C: I do.

P: Do you believe in God the Father? C: I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.

P: Do you believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God? C: I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead.

P: Do you believe in God the Holy Spirit? C: I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy , the communion of , the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

P: You have made public profession of your faith. Do you intend to continue in the covenant God made with you in your Baptism: to live among God’s faithful people,

3 to hear his Word and share in his supper, to proclaim the good news of God in Christ through word and deed, to serve all people, following the example of our Lord Jesus, and to strive for justice and peace in all the earth? C: I do, and I ask God to help and guide me.

P: Gracious Lord, through water and the Spirit you have made these people your own. You forgave them all their sins and brought them to newness of life. Continue to strengthen them with the Holy Spirit, and daily increase in them your gifts of grace: the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord, the spirit of joy in your presence; through Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord. C: Amen.

P: At baptism you were made children of God. You were sealed by the Holy Spirit and marked with the cross of Christ forever. Let your light so shine before others, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven. ANNOUNCEMENT OF OUR LORD’S RESURRECTION P:

P: Friends, whom are you seeking? C: We are seeking Jesus Christ, our Lord.

4 P: By ’s and Eve’s and all humanity’s sin, came death, but by Jesus Christ comes the resurrection of the dead. Christ is Risen!

C: He is risen indeed! P: May the light of Christ, rising in glory, dispel the darkness of our hearts and minds. C: As the children of Israel were led by a pillar of fire from slavery to freedom in the promised land, so we are led from the slavery of sin to the glorious liberty of the children of God, and to the heavenly land of promise.

P: Christ is Risen! C: He is risen indeed! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! P: Give thanks to the Lord for The Lord is good. C: God’s mercy endures forever. P: Let Israel now proclaim C: God’s mercy endures forever. P: I shall not die but live C: And declare the works of the Lord. P: The same stone which the builders rejected C: Has become the chief cornerstone. P: This is the Lord’s doing C: And it is marvelous in our eyes. P: Christ is risen! C: He is risen indeed! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!

GATHER The Holy Spirit calls us together as the people of God.

P: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. C: And also with you.

LITANY P: Christ has risen. C: Waiting for us to take notice. P: Christ has risen.

5 C: Waiting for us to respond. P: Christ has risen. C: Christ has risen indeed! Alleluia!

PRAYER OF THE DAY P: Let us pray. C: God of mercy, we no longer look for Jesus among the dead, for he is alive and has become the Lord of life. Increase in our minds and hearts the risen life we share with Christ, and help us to grow as your people toward the fullness of eternal life with you, through Je- sus Christ, our Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

FEED God speaks to us in scripture reading, and feeds us with the presence of Jesus Christ.

FIRST LESSON…………………….……..Acts 10:34–43 (pew Bible p. 895) 34Peter began to speak to [the people]: “I truly understand that God shows no partiality, 35but in every nation anyone who fears him and does what is right is acceptable to him. 36You know the message he sent to the people of Israel, preaching peace by Jesus Christ—he is Lord of all. 37That mes- sage spread throughout Judea, beginning in Galilee after the baptism that John announced: 38how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power; how he went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him. 39We are witnesses to all that he did both in Judea and in Jerusalem. They put him to death by hanging him on a tree; 40but God raised him on the third day and allowed him to appear, 41not to all the people but to us who were chosen by God as witnesses, and who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead. 42He commanded us to preach to the people and to testify that he is the one ordained by God as judge of the living and the dead. 43All the

6 prophets testify about him that everyone who believes in him receives for- giveness of sins through his name.”

PSALM 118 We will read the Psalm responsively by whole verse.

P: Give thanks to the Lord, for the Lord is good; God’s mercy endures forever.

C: The Lord is my strength and my song, and has become my salvation.

L: I give thanks to you, for you have answered me and you have become my salvation.

C: The stone that the builders rejected has become the chief cornerstone.

L: By the Lord has this been done; it is marvelous in our eyes.

C: This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.

SECOND LESSON………….………...... Colossians 3:1-4 (pew Bible p. 957) 1If you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. 2Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth, 3for you have died, and your life is hid- den with Christ in God. 4When Christ who is your life is revealed, then you al- so will be revealed with him in glory.

DISCUSSION OF THE LESSONS

HOLY GOSPEL………………….….……Matthew 28:1-10 (pew Bible p. 811) P: The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew the 28th chapter. C: Glory to you, O Lord. (spoken)

7 1After the sabbath, as the first day of the week was dawning, and the other Mary went to see the tomb. 2And suddenly there was a great earthquake; for an angel of the Lord, descending from heaven, came and rolled back the stone and sat on it. 3His appearance was like lightning, and his clothing white as snow. 4For fear of him the guards shook and became like dead men. 5But the angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid; I know that you are looking for Jesus who was crucified. 6He is not here; for he has been raised, as he said. Come, see the place where he lay. 7Then go quickly and tell his disciples, ‘He has been raised from the dead, and indeed he is going ahead of you to Galilee; there you will see him.’ This is my message for you.” 8So they left the tomb quickly with fear and great joy, and ran to tell his disciples. 9Suddenly Jesus met them and said, “Greetings!” And they came to him, took hold of his feet, and worshiped him. 10Then Jesus said to them, “Do not be afraid; go and tell my brothers to go to Galilee; there they will see me.”

P: The Gospel of the Lord. C: (spoken) Praise to you, O Christ.

SERMON……………………………………………………………....Pastor Schul

NICENE CREED C: We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation

8 he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son,* who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

PRAYERS OF THE CHURCH Response after each petition: L: Lord, in your mercy C: Hear our prayer.

WE SHARE THE LORD’S PEACE P: The peace of the Lord be with you always. C: And also with you.

OFFERTORY PRAYER Merciful God, our ordinary gifts seem small for such a celebration, but you make of them an abundance, just as you do with our lives. Feed us for service in you name, in the strength of the risen Christ. C: Amen.

9 C: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy king- dom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.

SEND God blesses us and sends us in mission to the world.

P: The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you. The Lord look upon you with favor + and give you peace. C: Amen.

P: Christ is risen! C: He is risen indeed!

P: Go in peace; serve the Lord. C: Thanks be to God.
