CHAPTER 1: FRENCH BULLDOG LOOKS AND SIZES

Once you go Frenchie, you never go back

he French Bulldog, also known as the "Frenchie", is a small, muscular, and T compact dog. The French Bulldog has a broad, square head, very short muzzle, and large bat ears. An average French Bulldog is about 12 inches to one foot tall at the shoulder, and it also weighs about 16 to 28 pounds. French Bulldogs can be heavier than that and can also either be taller or shorter than 12 inches, but they are often within this range. They often have a masculine-like structure. However, while some are quite muscular, others might be relatively slimmer than normal. Generally, their signature look is their male structure which often correlates with their "unsmiling face". It has heavy bones and is considered to be a dwarf . Most people are quick to suggest that French Bulldogs are unfriendly because of their looks. However, that's not true. French Bulldogs come in various colors, but if you require a show dog, it’s best you do not purchase a dog that is entirely black or tan or gray-blue. These colors are often too dull. If you want to buy a dog, one of the best places is the Frenchie World, the largest french bulldog community on the Internet. Our frenchies are carefully selected from the finest breedings, and so far we've sent them to over 50 countries worldwide. You can find more info on www.frenchbulldogbreed.net.

Most Bulldogs don't shed a lot of hair, so you don't need to worry about that. However, their shedding capacity largely depends on their nutritional habits, their grooming schedule and the climatic condition that exists. Most times, you need to watch out for the kind of shampoo that you use on them as that might also significantly affect their shedding. In cold weather, they often develop a winter coat, but in spring weather, they begin to shed. The French Bulldog is an extremely loving dog that is also very affectionate. They are very fond of playing, and will demand a lot of attention. This is a breed that will not do well when left alone for extended

periods of time. You’ve got this book though so you don’t need to worry, everything you need to know on how to care for the dog will be unveiled in the subsequent chapters. French Bulldogs often have very small litters. They are known as a brachycephalic breed. These are breeds with small litters. Thus an average French Bulldog will have as few as 3-5 puppies. It is mostly dogs without pure breeding that have more than five puppies at a go. Nature is often a significant determining factor in the number of puppies that a French Bulldog would have. This means that a small litter is based on facts and findings but is subject to change. Small litters often mean better circumstances for the puppies. This is because most puppies are prone to having several congenital disabilities. Thus if the litter is quite small, it would be easier to tend to their defects. It becomes even easier to keep learning about the dog as they grow older. Most French Bulldogs always have caesarean section births because a majority of them are unable to give birth naturally due to their narrow pelvis and hips. If you have a pregnant French Bulldog, it is essential that you refer her to a professional breeder or a veterinarian so that the dog doesn't lose the puppies. Unlike other dogs, French Bulldogs cannot have large litters because they will become underweight and most times, the female will become very stressed and tired due to continuous feeding of her puppies. Thus if you are breeding the dog with the hope that you will have an excess number of puppies running around, then you are mistaken. The probability that you will have more than three puppies is quite small.. Always be patient when purchasing a dog and ensure you know all about their breeding capacity before you go ahead and buy the dog.

CHAPTER 2: WHY FRENCH BULLDOGS

I don’t need a therapist, I’ve a Frenchie

French Bulldogs have unique personalities that distinguish them from other types of pet dogs. The male French Bulldog often has a large head; they are quite bigger in body size and often tend to have the face of a bully. Apart from these, there are very modest differences between the males and the females. They also have personalities that make each of them uniquely special without necessarily considering their gender. Some French Bulldogs are known to be people lovers. They can get along with several kinds of individuals while some can be a little aggressive or turned off at the sight of other humans. Some French Bulldogs are known to be quite shy and laid back when it comes to doing activities or interacting with others. On the other hand, some are often very active, ready to scatter and disrupt a lot of things. Some Bulldogs are bold and courageous and

7

French Bulldog Secrets

never fear anyone or anything while some are often so cautious about things and people around them. Some are known to be submissive pets, only doing what the owner asks them to do, while others are known to be dominant, acting like the bosses in charge. Most times, the environment in which they live in substantially determines their personality traits. Research has shown that the female French Bulldog has a tendency to be quite territorial and moody. Sometimes, they can be feisty or even calm depending on the situation. However, most of these bad traits often develop due to lack of quick sterilization or access to vaccinations at a much younger age. If this has been done, it will be quite easy for them to adapt to other situations as they continue to grow. One excellent reason why it's great to have a French Bulldog as a pet is because they are rarely known to bark at all. When they do, it’s to alert their owners of danger, when they are in positions of fear or to make their owner attentive about something unusually strange in their surroundings. Thus, as a French Bulldog owner, you don't need to worry about having a dog that ends up disturbing the whole home, including your neighbors. However, if you notice that your French Bulldog is barking continuously, the best thing to do is to teach the dog some of the commands of quietness. As soon as he stops barking, praise him or give a treat. Sometimes they bark because they are too full of energy. Try to make the dog shed some of this by taking a walk. Another thing to do when the dog is barking, especially in situations of danger, is to stay calm for a while because they can also sense your nervousness and frustration. Try to observe the thing that is making them react suddenly. If it is something/someone that they always react to, try to get them used to that thing or person to avoid future occurrences. Because of their short noses, they are prone to be more relaxed in a cool environment, preferably an air-conditioned environment. Thus, they have no need for continuous barking activities. Their favorite hobby is often to be a warmer for their owner's laps.

CHAPTER 3: VITAL NEEDS OF A FRENCH BULLDOG

Until one has loved an animal, a part of one's soul remains unawakened. ~ Anatole

Your dog deserves to be treated as part of the family. You need to give the dog equal respect that you give to other members of the family. The dog deserves a necessary and adequate amount of human attention. A majority of people assume their dog is just a fancy attraction in the home that should be tended to once in a while. However, if that's the kind of conclusion that you have about your dog, then you are very mistaken. You should treat your dog as you would treat your baby, giving him the utmost attention and care that he deserves. Your dog needs quality time and attention. This means you have to dedicate a certain number of hours to play with him, pet him and have fun with him.

9

French Bulldog Secrets

French Bulldogs often even desire more human attention than other dogs, which means that they might begin to retreat from you if you don't give them a considerable amount of the love that they desire. One way to keep your dog's company is to buy them lovely toys that they can play with in case you start getting extremely busy. Some people like to let their dogs watch TV or listen to music, so they don't get bored. You can play some cartoons for them to watch and check out what their favorite television show is so that they can feel excited. Always ensure you take them on a visit to the vet regularly so that they can remain as healthy as they are happy. In total, always ensure that your dog has a considerable amount of love and attention around him at all times. Most French Bulldogs like to play a lot, although unlike other dogs, they don't like to get dirty too often. French Bulldogs often love to get excited at all times. They have very high energy levels and are very happy to be around you. Most times, to ensure that they stay in that happy mood, it is good to take them out for a walk in the park and play nice doggy games with them. This helps them boost their happy hormone and stay relaxed for a longer time. Although there are several exceptions to this, in most cases, female French Bulldogs often like to be the center of attention. They might get feisty if you do not succumb to their demands by making them the center of attention, unlike their male counterparts who do not care that much as long as they are receiving the care they need at the time that they need it. Just like humans, the females tend to want more attention. However much they play, French Bulldogs get exhausted quickly. They might just sleep it off when tired or hide somewhere. Thus it is very essential that you schedule play times for them so that they can relax, go to the potty and sleep at the appropriate hour. You shouldn't allow your dogs to get too over excited because they can become quite harmful especially amongst guests. A happy dog makes a happy home. It is good to ensure that your dogs are happy; however, don't let them become too excited on any occasion.

During summer, provide enough water to cool down. During summer, your dog will need water to cool off because your dog naturally doesn't like hot weather. As often mentioned in this book, your dog must not regularly be exposed to excessive heat because they will begin to overheat. Thus, it is better to provide enough water for your dog during the summer. When taking your dogs for a walk during the summer, your dog might begin to pant. In such a situation, it is better that you already have some form of a bowl of water available, so the heat doesn't get too much and end up killing the dog. The water must also not be too hot for the dog; it should be at a very cool temperature. Cold

10

enough to ensure that the dog is calm enough to relax but not too cold so that it doesn't affect their respiration at all. French Bulldogs tend to have respiratory issues when exposed to water that is too cold for them. Take breaks as often as you can while walking your dog during the summer and once in awhile, splash water on your dog as he walks so that he can cool off a little and relax even as he walks. After splashing the water, you can try to find comfortable shade for the dog to stay under in order to avoid any excess heat. After relaxing for a while, you can begin the walk again by maintaining intervals for him to stop and drink water in between periods of walking. Doing this will also keep the dog healthy for a very long time.

Do Regular Health Check-ups French Bulldogs are often described as a small and sturdy human that has a clown-like attitude in life. This is because the dogs love to play and enjoy human company a lot. Their desire is to be seen as a part of the family as that keeps them happy. Normally their average lifespan is between 12 and 14 years. They are often very healthy compared to some other breeds. However, during this lifespan, they are prone to having certain diseases, which is why it is essential that they are given routine health checkups. Due to their breed, several health conditions can affect them during their lifetime. They have a short nose, and this means respiratory disorders such as Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome (BOAS) which is an upper respiratory problem that affects the nose, mouth, and throat and is widely known to be suffered by many of them. Often, veterinarians advise that dogs suffering from BOAS should not be bred because it can be inherited by their puppies and this will mean a lifetime of spending money on treatments. During their exercises, French Bulldogs are also known to have breathing problems because their narrowed nostrils restrict an intake of oxygen. When exposed to excess heat, they tend to have difficulties with panting and sometimes cleft lips and palates. For the females, they are prone to having difficulties while giving birth because the puppies often have large heads and the mother almost always has a small pelvis. All these problems just require that they go through routine checkups with a veterinarian to ensure that they remain healthy and are free from diseases. A healthy dog is easier to take care of, play with and be companions with.

Give Vaccinations When it comes to the health of a French Bulldog, vaccinations are paramount to preventing them from getting diseases. Most times, until the puppy has had all their vaccine shots, the puppy owner serves as their environmental protection against diseases. Vaccinations enable the immune systems of the puppies to make antibodies to fight these diseases. Seven weeks after birth, your French Bulldog should undergo their first set of vaccinations. The next set should be given when they are ten weeks old, and the third set should also be given three weeks after. It is important to ensure that the space between vaccinations is just three weeks. Vaccinations must start when the puppy is seven weeks old and the dog must receive a total of 4 vaccinations before it reaches 16 weeks old. Vaccinations should be given in the mornings, especially on days where there would be less need for environmental stimulation so that you can be able to observe the puppy's movement thoroughly. Arrange for vaccinations to be given in the morning, on a day when your schedule will allow for low to no environmental stimulation, and you can observe your puppy. This way, if your puppy reacts negatively to your vaccinations, you will be able to detect it early and respond by taking the puppy to see a veterinarian as soon as possible. Vaccinations available for French Bulldogs often include a Modified Live Virus Type 5 way which is also known as a Canine 1-DAPPv. It stands for- Canine Distemper (Distemper) - Adenovirus type 1 (Hepatitis) - Adenovirus type 2 (Respiratory Disease) - Parainfluenza (canine influenza) - Parvovirus (Parvo) Vaccine. Always ensure that you keep a sanitizer around yourself and visitors before, during and after the duration of your dog's vaccination.

Sterilize them as often as you can French Bulldogs need to be sterilized in order for them to remain healthy throughout their lifetime with you. Unless you are planning to breed the dog, you must ensure that you sterilize the dog. Sterilization prevents them from having infections and several cancer-related issues that can occur later in life. When it is done early, the chances of them getting those diseases will be relatively less. For male French Bulldogs, sterilization is better done for them while they are very young. Sterilizing male French Bulldogs at a younger age prevents them from turning into aggressive creatures. Most French Bulldogs often tend to become aggressive as they get older. However, with adequate sterilization at a younger age, the probability that they will become aggressive becomes more reduced. Sterilizing male French Bulldogs also helps them to have and sustain a healthy prostate. For

12

French Bulldog Secrets

the male French Bulldogs as well, sterilization reduces the possibility of getting testicular cancer in the years to come. Female French Bulldogs should not be omitted in the chain of sterilization. They need to be spayed before the period of their first heat. Female French Bulldogs are often prone to having breast cancer. Thus doing this will help them avoid getting breast cancer later in the future. Sterilization also helps the female French Bulldogs to be less prone to infections such as uterine infection, which is quite common in their breed. Often times, veterinarians suggest that breeders should sterilize all the French Bulldogs that are not suitable breeders to avoid further complications. The best time to sterilize your dog is when he or she is still a puppy.

Test your dog regularly for intestinal parasites, and conduct heartworm prevention and flea and tick control. As a dog owner, you need to continuously protect your dog from parasites that can plague them and hurt them as well. If your dog is hurting, you would be hurting too, from spending money on treatments to eventually losing them. Several existing controls can be used to treat the dogs for intestinal parasites, and to conduct heartworm prevention, and flea and tick control. However, the best way to know which prevention treatment is better for your dog is to consult a veterinarian to see which best suits your French Bulldog and helps to keep him parasite-free. Although parasites are a part of life and would cause no problems when they exist in small numbers, when they multiply and become larger in number, they are destined to pose a threat to their hosts' body. Some of the parasites in the body of a dog can also be passed to humans. Thus prevention is highly needed and more preferable than treatment. No individual product works directly in ensuring a parasite-free dog. However, a combination of several defensive actions would help ensure that the dog remains healthy. Veterinarians often recommend two different parasite programs for dogs. The first one is the "Interceptor and NexGard" while the other is the "Proheart yearly injection." The Interceptor and NexGard are simply flavored chews that will be given to the dog once a month to help prevent ticks, fleas, heartworms and other parasites. The injection, on the other hand, is given every three months. One injection is provided with Bravecto to cover fleas and ticks while the other is provided with Milbemax to cover intestinal worms. Before deciding on any of these, consult your veterinarian first.

CHAPTER 4: TIPS TO CHOOSE A FRENCH BULLDOG

Keep calm and get a Bulldog

Great Mice Hunters French Bulldogs are great mice hunters. It means that once you have a French Bulldog in the home, you do not necessarily need to get a cat. Cats and dogs do not often get along together though so it is not advisable to let them live together. However, if you are sure that there are several rodents living in your home and you want them gone, your best bet is to get a French Bulldog. French Bulldogs do not like the scent of rodents. They also do not like the sight of them, so they are always quick to hunt them down when they perceive their smell or when they mistakenly see them. If you are the type of person who loves to set mouse traps around the home, you might have to hold off especially when you have a French Bulldog around. Your mouse trap might end up hurting your French Bulldog.

14

French Bulldog Secrets

The best thing to do is to ensure that your dog roams around the house well. If your French Bulldog is allowed to freely roam the home, there is a high probability that he will be able to catch rodents as quickly as possible and save you the stress of coping with them or trying to create traps for them. Just like humans, French Bulldogs do not like rodents, so they will often kill them. Your French Bulldog will become the perfect mouse catcher for you, so you need not panic. Just ensure that there is enough room for him to roam, especially in the areas where rodents are likely to hide.

Toy lovers French Bulldogs are some of the cutest pets that you can have. And just like cute babies, they also love to play with their toys. There are several places that you can get toys for them. You can check online or in some department stores for animal supplies. A majority of these toys are very profitable and often serve as great treats to offer, especially during their various training hours. There are different kinds of toys and products that can be converted into toys. However, always endeavor to consider a few things before purchasing a toy for your dog. Some of the things to consider include the price of the toy, the durability of the toy, the availability (in case it goes missing), your dog's preferences toward certain products and, of course, the safety of the dog is always paramount. The different categories of toys for French Bulldogs include the "Throwables," these are the toys that can be tossed and also used to play "fetch." This is often the most loved exercise for the dogs so if they have a permanent toy to do this exercise, you will find that they will be extremely excited and happy to play. The "Chewables" are toys that can be chewed by the dog but can’t be swallowed. Always ensure that you don't buy dogs any toys that are small enough to be swallowed. Another set of toys are the "Comfort Toys." These are the types that can provide extreme support and comfort for the dogs, especially at night before they sleep or sometimes when the owner is not at home, and they need some company. It could be in the form of stuffed toys that can pass for human affection.

Human Companions If you are the kind of person that likes to leave your dog at home while you go to work, a French Bulldog might not be a good pet for you. French Bulldogs love to demand human attention so they do not like to be left alone. They can become quite reclusive and fearful if they are always left alone. French Bulldogs always love

15

French Bulldog Secrets

to be in the company of a human being who is in turn showing them attention. They are just like babies, always demanding that you remember that they exist. Unlike children, however, that might just begin to cry, French Bulldogs, on the other hand, will not bark. Instead they will start to withdraw from you or just suddenly follow you everywhere you go even to the bathroom! To avoid situations such as this, it is best that you just give them tons of attention and care. Pat them often, rub their bodies, and let them spend hot afternoons with you on your legs. Cuddle them often as you would for babies, carry them, play games with them, walk with them, take them to play with other dogs and just do anything that will lighten their mood. They hate being lonely so don’t put them in such a situation. If you are unable to tend them for certain hours, you can ask a friend to check in on them. It would become a problem for a sleeping dog to realize that its owner has left him all alone. The best thing to do is either to take them with you or to get someone to take care of them for you.

CHAPTER 5: NURTURING & TRAINING A FRENCH BULLDOG

A house is not a home without a Frenchie

French Bulldogs like walking but they have can get tired easily. One great way to avoid them getting tired is by offering to take them on a walk with treats as their reward. This kind of walking is also called the obedience form of training. Here, while you are walking, you hold a treat by your side to keep your dog close to you even without a leash. He will just continue to follow you as long as you have his treat with you and he can see it. This form of walking is a very great way to keep your dog relaxed and excited, but try not to allow them to get excessively excited. This is because you don’t want this training to become regular, as your dog might become quite greedy or sometimes uninterested. The best way to ensure that this form of trick works for the dog is to make sure that the dog is hungry. This way, he already

17

French Bulldog Secrets

has his reasons for following you. As you move with the treat in your hand, he will follow you with the idea that you are going to give him some. You should do that too, give him treats. As he walks along, drop treats on the floor for him regularly. However, create some distance as you drop the treats to keep him anxious about the next one, to keep him focused and also to ensure that he does not go astray. Walking without a leash is the easiest way to lose your dog so ensure that you pass through a place that he is quite accustomed to so that he doesn't get lost. Practice this for a while until your dog gets used to it. French Bulldogs are very likely to become stubborn, naughty and greedy if their treats consistently contain food rather than toys. Refrain from always using food as their treat especially during training. Practice the habit of giving them more toys than any forms of food. You can make them get used to having toys by letting them have a favorite toy and using this toy as their treat during the training so that they get very excited to use and play with the toy. Especially when you are doing commands like sitting and walking, sometimes, if you give them food as their treat, after the trick they won't come back to you because they are satisfied and are not excited to do that particular trick again. However, if you offer them their toys during that period, they will most likely want to come back to play. Toys are more liable to make your dog faithful because if your dog becomes a greedy animal, strangers can just offer your dog food and your dog will run off without you. However, if you do not offer him food too often, he'll learn how to refrain from accepting it from a stranger especially in a situation when he has a regular feeding schedule which he has gotten accustomed to. Try to reward your dog often with soft toys. Ensure that the toy is not too tiny to swallow, so it doesn't choke him. It could be in the form of plastic, for example, a plastic bone, a plastic ball, or sometimes a stuffed animal or old clothing.

CHAPTER 6 : DAILY TIPS FOR FRENCH BULL DOG OWNERS

Every once in a while, a dog enters your life and changes everything

Dogs should undergo regular nail trimming French Bulldogs often have very fast-growing nails which need to be trimmed on a regular basis. The process of nail trimming often requires some practice to avoid injury. As the dog owner, you need to be very confident in the ability to trim your dog’s nails before starting. If you are quite nervous, the dogs will be able to sense your nervousness and might end up not allowing you to trim their nails. If you are indeed nervous, it is best that you let a certified or qualified dog groomer handle it. To trim a French Bulldog's nail, the best time is immediately after the dog's bath. This way, the dog is assumed to be in a relaxed position. You can also have treats

19

French Bulldog Secrets

set aside for the dog to make sure it is on its best behavior. Nail trimming must be done regularly with nail clippers or a nail grinder. This helps to avoid all forms of overgrowth, splitting, and nail cracking. The first action to take is to ensure that the equipment is in good condition. Oil your equipment regularly and ensure that your clippers are sharp. Once the equipment is ready to go, the next step is to massage the paws of the dog to check for any sores or dryness. Then take a front leg of the dog and squeeze gently to push the nail away from the quick. Make sure you do not cut it too closely so as not to hurt the dog, which might result in some bleeding. The process should also be repeated on the second leg, then with the hind legs as well.

Clean the dog’s ears regularly French Bulldogs are popularly known for their bat-like ears. These ears are cute, tall and pointy. However, they also collect a lot of dirt and various particles which make it important for them to have regular ear cleaning to avoid infections. Regular cleaning of the French Bulldog's ears also helps to prevent a build-up of wax and debris which could result in an infection. Before the cleaning begins, it is essential that you smell the ears of the dog so as to make sure that there is no odor or weird discharge coming out of the ears. It could be a sign of an infection. Some of the essential items needed for a cleaning include cotton balls or cotton pads, dry and clean cloth or paper towels, canine ear rinse solution, cotton swabs, a flashlight and some treats to reward the dog. To begin the cleanup procedure, soak the cotton ball in the ear rinse solution and use the ball to swab the exposed areas of the ears, not inside the ear. Gently scoop out any form of wax or dirt around the opening of the inner ear. At no point should you put the cotton swab deep inside the dog's ear canal because it can cause an infection. Instead, use a soaked cotton swab to clean the opening of the dog's ear canal gently. Then gently squirt the ear rinse solution into the ear canal and let them shake it out. This shouldn't hurt and also allows them to remove the dirt and wax from deep in the canal. Use the clean towel to dry the outer ear and canal opening.

Brush often to remove excess hair A routine brushing of a French Bulldog keeps the hair tangle-free and clean. It also helps to maintain healthy skin, stimulates blood flow, removes dead hair and distributes natural oils. The hair must be brushed all the way down to their skin and must be brushed from the front to the back with a rubber curry brush. After brushing, it is recommended that you apply a light mist of detangling spray to the hair to leave it shining. The items required for brushing a French Bulldog include a slicker or a bristle or a steel pin brush, a two-in-one comb, a shedding blade for the heavy shedders and a liquid detangler. This equipment is essential because French Bulldogs often require a very delicate touch when they are being brushed. When brushing, ensure that you brush their hair in the direction of the hair growth, otherwise there is a possibility that you will damage the coat and upset the dog. Use a zoom groom to strip the dead hair away from the coat. Then use the slicker brush to remove the dead undercoat. This slicker brush often has very sharp pins, so be careful and gentle while using it to prevent irritation. It is also essential to use a rubber hand mitt to strip off all the dead hairs. Brushing the dog from early on in life makes it easier for the dog to get used to it and enjoy it at the same time. It is best to have treats for the dog while you brush to keep them calm, patient and more relaxed during the process. It will make you feel calm too.

Cleanse skin folds frequently French Bulldogs are almost always distinct with the cute wrinkles on their face. Just like other dogs such as Boston , , and English Bulldogs, nearly every French Bulldog has deeply pronounced facial wrinkles. These lines are also called folds. Their facial folds are often a very short muzzle which contains light and thick fur. Their chubby nature helps to enhance this look into a cute one. These folds often require a good cleaning regularly for them to remain healthy. When you clean these facial folds regularly, it keeps their eyes clean and free from dirt and detritus. It also helps to ensure that there is no build-up of bacteria in the middle of the lines that have formed wrinkles. Their folds should be cleaned at least once weekly or every single time that they have a bath. If they are not cleaned regularly, their skin will be prone to several issues which could eventually lead to health problems. Most skin fold cleaning products often come relatively cheap. There are some called "tear staining cleansers." This one works by removing dark tear stains from beneath the eyes of the dogs.

They often contain a real amount of sodium-hydroxide which is quite gentle on the skin and works efficiently. After applying such cleansers, it is still essential that you rinse the spot with water or moist wipes. Human-use wipes can be used. However, there are also animal wipes available online and in stores. Snout Soother is another product that helps you clean the folds surrounding the nasal region of the dog. The most important thing you should note is that without regular cleaning, the chances are that your dog is not healthy.

Bathe your dog regularly Washing and bathing your French Bulldog too regularly might lead to the drying out of its natural skin oils. Thus it is recommended that they should be bathed at least five times a year. That isn’t always realistic so bathing once a month is the best option. Instead of bathing daily, using clean and wet washcloths or wipes is another good choice. French Bulldogs seldom get dirty. Unlike other kinds of dogs, they hardly have the habit of rolling in their poo or getting into nasty things. In short, they don’t get too dirty thus do not require bathing on a daily basis. When bathing your French Bulldog, wet the dog thoroughly with a handheld shower nozzle and slightly warm water. After that, use a moisturizing baby shampoo to lather the coat of the dog. Ensure that it reaches the inner parts of the dog's wrinkles from to the neck to the tip of the dog’s tail. Make sure the moisture gets across every part of the body, including the belly and each leg. Pay extra attention to areas around the eyes and the lips so that the shampoo doesn’t get into them thereby hurting the dog in the process. After doing this, rinse the body gently with warm water. Use a wet washcloth to wipe the body of the dog and ensure that the wrinkles are thoroughly cleaned all the way to the dog’s bottom. Bathing for your dog should start when they are at their early stages of life. The best way to avoid them fighting you during bath time is to let them get used to hopping inside empty tubs and spending time there with treats and toys.

Give your dog a thorough face-cleaning French Bulldogs are popular for their face folds, the wrinkles below their eyes and the ones around their noses. These places can easily accommodate a lot of dirt. Hence it needs to be washed thoroughly. These areas also harbor a lot of moisture and bacteria that can stick around for a long time, even after a bath. Thus, the facial areas need to undergo a thorough cleaning and special care.

When dealing with a dog’s face, it is important that you wipe them often with wet wipes that are non-allergenic and antibacterial. Wiping their faces regularly with these wipes helps them fight off any possible skin infection and keeps their faces clean and healthy. When bathing them, you can use baby shampoo in cases where the dogs have sensitive skin. However, the shampoo is likely to cause havoc if it mistakenly gets into their eyes, their noses or their mouths. Thus, make sure that you take care while washing them. After washing their faces, you can use a soft cloth to wipe them dry. Pay extra attention to the areas of their wrinkles because these sectors are very likely to have moisture trapped in them. The moisture builds up, creates a warm and damp environment and eventually breeds bacteria. To avoid this, pay utmost attention to these areas and clean thoroughly. After cleaning, you can apply baby powder on the surface of their facial wrinkles. Doing this helps to absorb all moisture and keeps their skin dry and extremely healthy. Doing all of these steps regularly ensures that your dog’s face stays healthy for a very long time.

Avoid Swimming Pools French Bulldogs are not good swimmers. Unless they have a life vest on, it is a mistake for you to leave them in the pool because they can quickly sink if left unattended. French Bulldogs are known to have flat snouts and are quite top heavy which makes them sink easily. They also tend to have trouble keeping their noses above the water and breathing in water. If you intend to let your French Bulldog swim, it is important that you only place them in shallow water, with a life vest, and never out of your sight at any time. Unlike other kinds of dogs, once a French Bulldog begins to sink, it can’t swim up to the surface to save himself. Pet owners are often advised to take their dogs into a children’s pool if the dog needs to be in the water. The dog should still be wearing a life jacket in this situation. French Bulldogs should also be watched closely when taken to the beach. These pets are very likely to get infected with health problems like dehydration, vomiting, and diarrhea if they get into the water. When it comes to deep waters, French Bulldogs need to be treated like new infants. They need to be watched carefully, so they do not drown in water. They have difficulty breathing under water, so it's even better to avoid it altogether rather than having to spend money on future treatment. Although some are in support of teaching the dog how to swim, the best school of thought still preaches that it is better just to avoid taking the dog close to water in the first place.

CHAPTER 7: FEEDING THE FRENCH BULLDOGS

A Frenchie is the only thing on Earth that loves you more than he loves himself

When it comes to feeding, French Bulldogs are often placed on a strictly meat- based diet. This is because French Bulldogs need a lot of meat to stay healthy. Fresh and frozen meat can be very costly and is almost always inconvenient to serve as the ideal meal for the dog. It is also a form of unbalanced diet. However, the best kind of meal that is perfect for a French Bulldog is simply high-quality dry food. It is recommended that a nutritionally balanced meat-based diet should be given to French Bulldogs.

24

French Bulldog Secrets

The options available for feeding French Bulldogs include commercial dry food (known as kibble), raw foods, canned foods and other forms of homemade meals. All commercial dog foods come in various types and different quality levels. In most cases, if the quality of the food is high, then the French Bulldog doesn’t need to eat a lot of food because a meal that is enriched in high-quality nutrients and proteins will have fewer filler ingredients. A high-quality dry food for dogs includes a combination of ingredients such as meat, vitamins, grains, fats and other forms of byproducts. These dry foods are very easily digestible by the French Bulldogs and cost less than other types of dog meals. Canned dog food often contains some of these ingredients, but they are more costly and usually contain 75% water. However, French Bulldogs must be fed some canned meals to benefit from the same calories offered in dry foods. Raw foods, on the other hand, include all foods such as chicken, ground beef, liver, breast, kidney, steak, and bone. Vegetables and fruits also constitute raw foods. An important aspect of caring for French Bulldogs is to ensure that you keep their weight under control. Your French Bulldog should be fed mostly a natural diet. This allows them to stay healthy. Have their meal contain an adequate proportion of fresh meat. It should also include a sizable amount of vegetables and small grains. Vegetables and grains often help them maintain their slim physique and keeps them healthy. It also contributes to preventing the dogs from developing breathing issues or having swollen abdomens. French Bulldogs that have more processed foods in their diet consistently often tend to fart a lot. That's quite nasty. Thus, try to reduce their intake of processed meals and put more effort into ensuring that they consume a natural and nutritious diet. Healthy nutrition is not the only recipe for your dog to maintain a healthy weight. To make sure that your dog doesn't become overweight, it is important that you take them for regular walks but avoid excessive heat because that can make them feel at unease. French Bulldogs do not need much exercise to stay healthy. All they need is a daily walk and healthy food. Another thing that is greatly needed is quality daily grooming. As long as all these are kept in check, the tendency for them to become unnecessarily overweight will be diminished. Dogs must be fed healthy meals that have a balanced diet. All their essential nutrients must always be present in what they eat so that their bodies can fight diseases that are likely to strike them.

CHAPTER 8: TEACHING THE FRENCHIE: SOCIALIZATION, LEASH TRAINING, POTTY TRAINING

French Bulldogs are known to be social dogs and are always likely to follow their owners everywhere.

A. Socialization Dogs are known to be sweet animals. They are usually very playful and active. However, their energy levels vary from other kinds of dogs. While some dogs are often hyperactive and tend to have so much joy, others can just be lazy and lose interest in every kind of energy-oriented situation. French Bulldogs often have so much energy and are usually stubborn. They need to be regularly disciplined due to their stubborn nature which tends to get worse as they grow older. They are often described as "big dogs in small bodies" due to their relentless nature and great temperament. If they are exposed to rules and some form of discipline at a younger age, this attitude can diminish. Once they are given rules, they become less stubborn due to their nature of easy adaptation. This is the main reason why pet owners are advised to establish ground rules about "humans being bosses" to the dogs. French Bulldogs can be aggressive to dogs that are the same sex as them, so sometimes when you spot your dog barking at another dog, it is just their nature. However, the animals tend to have weak temperament issues with animals such as cats and birds. They also have a very limited attitude toward little children. The best way to prevent this is to introduce them to little kids while they are still young so that the kid's faces will register in their heads. They are overtly charming and like to always be the center of attention. To ensure that they aren’t rude to your visitors, train them early. Dogs are very sensitive to smell, so it is best that you introduce your dog in neutral territory. One way to do this is to take the dog out for a long walk on the first day. This way the introduction will be less intense, you can get to know the dog well, and the dog can also get to know you properly.

26

French Bulldog Secrets

Most times, it is advised that at least two people should walk with the work to ensure the dog's safety. However, if you are the sole owner of the dog, monitor it on the first day to make sure that it is safe. When walking the dog, keep the dogs on longer leads, about a 1.5 meter length, as you walk so that you are not too close to the dog in case a fight breaks out if you are also walking another dog at the same time. If they squabble, it is better to walk the dogs away from one another and reintroduce them when they are more relaxed and calm. Your new dog is definitely going to act like a visitor for a while and will probably bump into a few things and cause chaos. However, you need to leave the dog to get used to the environment for a while. During these times, you need to monitor the dog closely in case he has some hidden injuries that you weren't notified of. You also need to make sure that the dog doesn't get injured by objects in your house which are entirely foreign to him. A dog trainer may be very relevant in this situation so it’s best you get one during this time to give you adequate knowledge of what your dog is capable of. When introducing two dogs to each other, the first thing to ensure is that you provide separate cages. This way, they can have a stress-free meeting for the first time and for both of them to have some sense of security and comfort. For humans, the cage serves as a training tool for the dog. However, the dogs use cages for safety. With these separate cages, the dogs will be allowed to use their most effective weapon, sense of smell, to get to know each other. This scent will allow them to have a deeper relationship between each other. After this, let the new dog roam around the house freely so that he can get used to his surroundings. When the new dog is wandering, make sure the old dog is completely out of view so that the new dog is not startled. This way too, the new dog will be leaving trails of his scent around the house in a territory that is not yet his own. After being introduced to the scent of another dog, the dogs no longer have to be separated as they will become used to having each other in the home. After a while, you can switch the dogs by letting the new dog go to a confined area that only the old dog is allowed to play in. At first, your old dog might become terrified of the intruder especially if the old dog is quite smaller than this new one. However, he will soon become accustomed to the scent and learn that he now has a playmate. After a short while, both dogs will no longer feel like strangers to each other. French Bulldogs are known to be social dogs and are likely to follow their owners everywhere. They often require a lot of attention, thus it is essential for you as their owner to show them lots of affection and love. All kinds of Bulldogs can have an aggressive nature which needs to be watched from their early stages. However

27

French Bulldog Secrets

French Bulldogs can be quite different from other types of Bulldogs. They seldom get too aggressive unless they are treated negatively, and react well once motivated and with positive reinforcement. Although French Bulldogs are known to carry sad expressions on their faces, their nature is quite the opposite. They are known to be a friendly set of dogs and are commonly calm and very attentive. However, this doesn't mean that they don’t need as much care. Like most household pets, French Bulldogs love lots of care and attention as reminders that they are unique to their owners. Since they are majorly known to live indoors with their owners, they are also known to demand a lot of human interaction. They are very playful, so an excellent way to keep them feeling loved and to interact with them is to engage in activities with them. For example, ball chasing can get them very excited and happy, and long walks in the cool weather can also make them feel loved. French Bulldogs get along with several pets well. They are often at peace while interacting with other dogs. Although they might be stubborn to train, they can be very sensitive and respond very well once they have undergone persistent training and have been motivated by food and treats.

B. Training French Bulldogs are known to have a short attention span, so the best time to train them is when they are still puppies. From the moment they come in to your home, it is essential that you let them know that they need to respect you. French Bulldogs need to be taught that you, their owner, are their alpha leader that deserves more respect in the home. Once this is understood by them, the chance that they will listen to you when you give commands is quite high. If they do not respect you from the onset, chances are that they might misbehave and act as agents of destruction within your home. The best time to train a French Bulldog to respect you is when it is still a puppy. There are several ways to show your French Bulldog that you are their Alpha leader. One such way includes letting them eat last after everyone in the family has eaten. Another way is to ensure that they are the last to go through a doorway. Yet another way is to teach the dog to sleep in its bed instead of snuggling up to you in the comfort of your bed. When you do this, the dog will learn to understand that as you are a leader, your territory has also been marked. French Bulldogs often take a long time to develop trust and also to respect the owner once he has set defining boundaries. As the owner and/or trainer you need to be quite patient. However, you also need to observe levels of firmness and fairness, especially in a situation where they breach the boundaries of respect and let stubbornness take over.

28

French Bulldog Secrets

Be patient during training A frustrating aspect of handling any dog or pet is to teach them obedience. A well- behaved dog is a dog that understands basic commands and also knows what is expected of him. A naughty dog, on the other hand, sometimes learns commands and knows what is expected yet refuses to give in anyway. Thus, when training a French Bulldog, it is important that you are very patient with them. Most times, the dogs are as reliant on your ability to teach its commands, the same way you are reliant upon the dog's ability to learn its commands. You have to be patient enough to show the dog the exact thing that you expect from them. In most cases, it is essential that you position yourself in the exact way you would want them to be placed so that they can quickly interpret the command. Often, you need to reward their correct positions for a command so that the thought will stick in their mind. Dogs are not humans; they do not possess the level of intelligence that humans have. However, they are quite smart and can adapt to new things as long as they are patiently taught how to do them. Being patient with French Bulldogs is imperative because they are naturally stubborn. If you are impatient with them, it might cause all sorts of problem between you and the dog. This breed of dog is also very slow when it comes to learning. Thus a high level of patience is genuinely needed for their training sessions. Avoid hitting the dog if the dog is disobedient to your training commands. Rather than doing that, look for another means to show your authority to them.

Be consistent with commands French Bulldogs have a nature of being relatively stubborn. Thus you need to make sure that they are accustomed to certain commands in order not to spoil them and to also ensure that they are attentive and understanding in various situations. The key thing about training your dog various commands is consistency. When you are consistent with your commands, there is a higher probability that they will learn and adopt the command. Before you even begin any form of training, ensure that you have established yourself as the leader, the "ALPHA DOG." This will prompt the Bulldog to know that he is not in charge of the situation and ought to simply be a follower. The amount of time that you use in training your Bulldog is determined by how much time you are willing to invest in the training. Often, training for a French Bulldog lasts for about 20

29

minutes daily, of which the dog will become more accustomed to the practice after two to three months. To be consistent means to repeat the entire training process until the Bulldog is used to every single command and is also highly responsive to it. When teaching, you need to make up your mind on what you would like the dog to do. It could be to be answerable to his name or to sit, etc. Whatever it is, go ahead and make an audio or visual sign that the dog can understand. Try as much as possible not to shout or raise your voice, otherwise the dog will be afraid. Make sure that the dog performs the action of the command even after it is done to retain loyalty. Always give rewards for their obedience to commands and positive responses to training.

Potty training for French Bulldogs Potty training for a French Bulldog is a huge learning process, and it takes a lot of patience. The best time to teach your dog how to potty is when they are at a very young age. Most French Bulldogs below the age of 12 weeks old cannot control their bladders at all. Thus they need to learn the commands for potty training as early as possible. They need to understand that potty must be done outside the house. It must become a routine habit for them as they grow older. When teaching your dog how to potty, ensure that you pay attention to their eating, playing and sleeping schedules. Always remove their water dish at least two hours before their bedtime. The best way to make it a habit for them is to let them get used to a regular spot at all times because they will get used to the odor and understand that it is the ideal place for potty at all times. During training, give them treats to reward them for doing it at the right place. Some of the signs that would signal that your dog needs to potty include whining, circling the room, pacing, staring or barking. The dog should be used to a command that requires them to potty at a certain spot so it becomes a routine that they can easily remember. Your French Bulldog must be able to locate the place after getting used to it. Make sure that the dog understands that he must never try to urinate or poo in the house for any reason whatsoever. Once he gets used to this, it becomes a habit for him.

Teach your dog the “Paw” trick French Bulldogs are a playful set of dogs. To keep them happy, you can teach them various types of tricks to get them excited and leave them in a happy mood. One such tricks is the "Paw" trick. This is a trick to get your dog to shake your hands. When training your French Bulldog, you need to exercise a lot of patience. They are

30

French Bulldog Secrets

dogs, not humans, so they won’t quickly adopt a trick, but with subsequent learning and practice, they will become used to a particular trick, and within a matter of time, they will respond effectively. To begin, start by having a selection of treats available. Treats are imperative to reward your dog as they perform the actions. Then, after that, choose a verbal command that they can respond to. It is very helpful to ensure that they understand and remember.

Some of the verbal signs that you can use include static words like "paw" or statements like "give your paw." Whichever you are choosing, you must be consistent with it so that they can get used to the statement and not get confused while being trained. Your statement must be short enough to remember and clear enough to understand. Ensure that your dog is not distracted during his training. Thus, hold the training in a distraction-free zone in the home. Start by letting your dog sit and just reach your hand out to touch his paw and say the chosen statement. After awhile just reach out with your hand and say the statement until they get used to the situation. With consistency, it will no longer be a new phenomenon for them.

Teach your dog the “Kiss” trick The “Kiss” trick is another nice trick to teach your French Bulldog. Like other tricks, you need to make sure that you have a particular place set out to perform the trick. Another thing to ensure is that you use very short and easily memorable commands. Also, ensure that you practice consistency. Remember that your French Bulldog, no matter how cute he looks, is still an animal. Thus their level of reasoning is quite different from that of humans. The "Kiss" trick is actually a very simple trick to teach your dog. The goal of the trick is to get your dog to lick you after the command. To make this happen, select very short slang for the dog. For example, "Kiss" or "Kiss me." These two examples would definitely be easy to associate with. To get the dog used to the command, you can introduce a treat. For example, add something sweet for him to lick off your face and then say the magic word so that he proceeds to lick your face. Do this continuously with different incentives. You can sometimes use cheese or whatever else the dog likes. But always make sure that it is something he really likes and make sure you say the magic word first. After doing this continuously, your dog will become quite used to the command so that every time you say the magic word even when there is no treat attached to it, he will do it. Always put on a happy face for him whenever you make the command so he knows that it is also something that makes you, his owner, happy.

Teach your dog the “Catch” trick The "Catch" trick is one of the simplest tricks for dogs. However, not many dogs know how to do it and not many dog owners know how to teach their dogs. Sometimes, you might throw a lot of things for the dog to catch yet the dog doesn't run or make any attempt to catch it, rather, he might just go pick it up. This is because the trick might seem easy but learning it might be quite difficult for them, especially when they are still puppies. You need to understand that it is not a natural trait for them; they have to learn it no matter how smart they are. As usual, always use treats when teaching your dog how to do any trick so that they will be interested in doing the trick. When starting out, use soft objects so that it doesn't hurt them. If they get hit in the face with something painful, it will discourage them from trying again. And if it is too small, they might swallow it and choke. Just throw a small soft toy or treat in the air, make it big enough for them to see it while you throw it and let them use their initiative to try to catch it before it hits the ground. It might take a while for the dog to get used to the trick so you need to make sure to keep throwing treats regularly so they will get used to the situation. Food is a treat to start with. If you throw it in the air and he doesn't catch it, pick it up and don’t let him eat it. After getting frustrated, he'll proceed to catching it himself.

Teach your dog the “Fetch” trick The "Fetch" trick is a trick that comes naturally for a lot of dogs. However, not all dogs actually know how to do it; some dogs still need to learn the treat so that it becomes second nature for them. It is just like the "Catch" trick, however, the difference now is that while doing the "Catch" trick, you throw the object closer to you but high in the air. The "Fetch" trick, however, means throwing it far away from you and not necessarily high in the air. To teach the dog how to do the "Fetch" trick, start by throwing an object far away from you and then running to retrieve it while following your dog. Start with a small soft object. Most times, it is good to start with a treat so they'll be willing to run. Simply throw a small object like a ball, for example, that you want your dog to retrieve and the dog will run to go and fetch it for you. One good way to achieve this is to create a small ball of treats so they can associate the ball with something great. After doing this continuously, the dog will get used to going to fetch his treat. Then you can stop including treats and just leave it as ordinary objects that they can go and fetch. You will realize that the dog will automatically go after the object and will return it to you so that you can give him the treat. Slowly, you can begin to stop the treat phenomenon by starting with a treat after two retrievals, then three, then you can finally stop adding treats so that they'll get used to it.

French Bulldog Secrets

Teach your dog the “Beg” trick “Beg” is one of the most advanced tricks to teach your dogs. This is a trick that requires you to teach your dog to stand on his hind legs. To achieve this trick, the first thing to do is to command your dog to sit. Once the dog is in his normal sitting position, just place a treat right above the dog's nose so that he would have to look up to see your hand and the treat. Make sure you hold the treat so has to stand on his hind legs to reach his treat. After doing this, say your command for "Beg." As usual, make it a very short statement that would be very easy for the dog to remember. If the dog tries to stand up or to jump up to get the treat, make sure that you do not reward him with the treat. Instead, command him to go back to sit. When he raises his front paws off the ground and makes himself closer to the treat, then you should reward him. If he has some difficulty with raising his paw, you can also hold his paws to support him. Practice this command consistently until the dog becomes used to it. After the dog has been able to associate the direction of what to do with the command, then you can proceed to reward him with treats or some form of affection. You must begin to withdraw from giving him treats after a while, so he doesn't just associate the command with treats and expect treats every single time. You can proceed to show off his tricks to get him excited.

Teach your dog the “Speak” trick Not many dog owners are aware that they can teach their dog how to speak. Training your dog how to speak can be really great and an exciting adventure for the dog. The best way to start this trick is to select a perfect treat for the dog. Make sure it is something that your dog really loves so it will be easier to teach the dog the trick. It could be a favorite toy that the dog likes or some kind of food. Make sure that the dog is really excited at the time of training because the idea is to make your dog bark. The point is to ensure that the dog is feeling excited. Let your dog play a little then hold the reward so that they can see it. After doing that, hide the reward behind your back, and if your dog is already extremely excited, he will naturally bark to retrieve the reward. When the dog barks, you can smile or say yes and give her the treat. However, if the dog doesn't bark, don't reward her, and you can try to do a fake bark yourself to encourage her to bark. Ensure that you add a verbal command to it so that they will understand the trick. You can say "Speak" or "Talk" just before they bark so that this will motivate them to bark. Or you can use a hand signal so that

33

French Bulldog Secrets

they can quickly respond to it. Your voice volume and tone should always be at the same pace every time you attempt the trick so that they can understand it. After a while, they will become used to the results of the command.

Teach your dog the “Bow” trick Before teaching your dog the “Bow” trick, your dog must be acutely aware of the tricks of how to come, sit, and lie down on command. The “Bow” trick simply means teaching the dog how to look like he is taking a bow by bringing his head to the floor. To begin, make sure your dog is standing and facing you from about two feet away from where you are standing. Ensure that you have a treat with you that he can see but do not give it to him until he has performed the trick. Make sure he is paying adequate attention at the time that you are trying to train him. Wave the treat a little so that you can gain his attention. As you wave the treat in the direction of the nose, bring the treat downward and make sure that his head is following the treat while his body is staying off the ground. Make sure that he doesn't just lie down. If he does that, just place your hand on the dog to stop him from doing that and continue practicing the trick. Give him a treat every time he gets the trick right and make sure that you also mention a verbal statement to associate with the command. This way the dog will be able to associate the command with the action. Repeat the trick a few more times or as many times as possible until the dog can no longer differentiate your orders from the trick. You can make use of hand signals to get him to understand quickly, and you can also take advantage of some form of the pretentious treat until he no longer associates the action to some treat.

Teach your dog the “Army crawl” trick A great trick to teach your dog is the "Army crawl" method. This is not entire complicated as long as you consistently treat the dog until they get used to the trick. The best way to achieve this trick is by ensuring you have enough treats to lure the dog into commitment. To begin, make sure that you have one treat in one hand, and then a handful of extra treats in the other hand. Begin the training session in a distraction-free room. The room should be extremely quiet and your dog should already be lying down. Your dog must already know how to lie on the floor and then let him see the hand that has the treat. After seeing the treat, he will begin to draw closer to get the treat, but you have to withdraw your hands an inch backward and make him continue leaning

34

French Bulldog Secrets

forward to retrieve what he wants. As he leans forward, you can begin to reward him continuously. Repeat the trick until the dog gets used to it. Give him timed intervals for every treat, so he becomes a little bit used to the crawling. As the dog gets better at having his stomach face downward, gradually begin to increase your distance so that he will perfect the act of crawling. You can give him a range from three inches to about a foot until he becomes used to the command. Use a verbal command such as "Crawl" or make hand signals that he won’t forget. After a while, refrain from using treats to reward him, and with time he will get used to the trick without anticipating any reward.

Teach your dog how to “Hoop Jump” Another great trick to teach your dog is called the "Hoop Jump" trick. The trick requires the use of a hula hoop and some treats. As usual, have enough treats available to get your dog very excited to perform the trick. To start the trick, begin by holding a hula hoop straight up and down by letting the bottom of the hula hoop rest on the ground. After doing this, try to make your French Bulldog walk through the hoop in a backward and forward manner until he gets used to the trick. Practice this consistently while the bottom of the hula hoop stays on the ground. After the dog has become accustomed to this, proceed to lift of the hula hoop a few inches off of the ground and force your French Bulldog to step over its base. Give the dog treats continuously for achieving your goal for the dog to jump over. Just as he gets used to that, begin to lift the hula hoop higher than a few inches until your dog has to jump to get through it. Make sure you do not exceed a maximum of about twelve inches. Remember that your French Bulldog is quite short, so if you exceed that height, there is a high probability that he might not be able to jump through the hoop at all. Also, remember that they do not like too much exercise and can get easily tired so have a time frame for the exercise. Once the dog has become used to this treat, begin to reduce his rewards so that he doesn't associate the trick with a treat.

Teach your dog how to wait Dogs are not human, so there is a very high probability that they can become stubborn when you try to command them. If your dog tries to be stubborn, you have to make a conscious effort to ensure that he stops being stubborn and he listens to

35

French Bulldog Secrets

you fervently. One particular time that your dog needs to be more attentive toward you is after he poops or does the potty. Your dog can become feisty after doing what he wants to do and might try to pull away. In these cases, you need to teach your dog how to wait until you have finished packing up or sorting out the situation. If he begins to pull or lead you in another direction, you have to make a conscious effort to stop him, especially if he has so much strength since this might put you off balance. Create a command that will enable the dog to wait and sit in a polite manner until you have finished picking up and cleaning up her business. It could be a verbal command or just the use of signs. Whichever one you decide, just ensure that the dog becomes attentive to you. Do not use the spanking option on them because they will begin to withdraw from you and sometimes might just run away from you. It might also be a very painful situation for them so make a conscious effort to refrain from that as much as possible. The goal of the wait command is to ensure that they remain at attention while you clean their mess so if they don’t learn it, the process will remain difficult for you.

Teach your dog how to roll over One great trick to teach your dog is how to roll over. Most dogs at an adult stage are often already accustomed to this trick. To get your dog to understand this trick, teach him the trick while he is still a puppy. The roll over trick is a classic trick for dogs and can also be used as the basis for further tricks. Once the dog understands how to do this trick, the probability that he will be able to do other tricks is quite high. As with other tricks, have treats available for the dog. To start this trick, ensure that your dog is already lying down flat on his belly. Place some treats in your hand, but close your hand to form a sort of fist and place your fist at their cheek just beside the dog's head. When you do this, the dog will be tempted to turn his head toward the direction of the treat. As he is turning his head, slowly move the treat away from the side of their head toward the back of their head. You will notice that your dog will begin to move his head in your direction and his body will begin to lean backward. Once the dog has perfected this trick, reward the dog with a treat. With time, you should begin to increase the distance of your closed fist so that the dog will gradually move from a position of lying on their side to their back then gradually rolling all the way over. Include a verbal statement or a hand signal as you do this until he associates it with the action.

C. SAFETY Leave retractable leashes at home When going out with your dog, make a conscious effort to leave your dogs' retractable lead in the house. It could get into a tangled mess, especially in a very crowded area. This is also because when you use a retractable lead for your dog, you are only teaching the dog that if they pull harder, they can go further, which is the exact opposite of what you want them to do. Retractable leashes often cause a lot more damage than the traditional leashes. They can also cause so many injuries for your dog because they are quite dangerous. They can cause your dog extreme pain and make him vulnerable to aggressiveness. They are very similar to handheld machines that create so much havoc. Most times, a dog that is at the end of a 30 foot retractable leash is simply an accident waiting to happen. However, if you use a retractable leash in the right manner and have a well-trained dog, it just means your dog will be able to go away from you for about 20 to 30 feet without any problem. Your dog will simply be happy sniffing, playing, eating and

37

doing things completely out of control from their owners without causing any problems. If you have a dog that often tries to run free, and you do not subject your dog to extreme hazards by other dogs who also like to run free, a retractable leash can be good for you. It will give your dog extreme freedom without exposing the dog to any kinds of danger whatsoever.

Use a harness rather than a leash Most times, when walking your French Bulldog, you do not necessarily need to use a collar to walk them. Because they are a short-nosed breed, it is often better you use a harness for them rather than a collar. This is because it is better for the dog’s airway and helps to ensure that they do not have any form of breathing issues later in their future. The harness is also a very useful training tool for French Bulldogs, especially when they are still puppies. It is less pressure for their necks and makes it easier for them to relax even when they are being held along on a journey. A harness also provides you, as a dog owner, better control over your dog. The harness discourages the dog from pulling you or jumping unnecessarily. For dogs who get distracted easily, a harness enables them to maintain the right amount of focus that they need.

Although a harness is quite good, your dog might just dislike how it feels, since it limits them from doing some of the things they want to do. Also, a harness with a back clip might not be a hundred percent effective in keeping the dog under control. Sometimes, it might be better to get a harness with a front clip so that your dog can draw additional attention to you. Most often the back clip harness helps to train the dog how to ignore you and pull you whenever you are trying to gain some form of control over him. However, the harness is always much better for a French Bulldog than a collar due to the breathing issues.

CHAPTER 9: PROPER EXERCISE REGIMEN FOR FRENCH BULLDOGS

Cool Nose, Warm Heart, I love My Frenchie

All dogs need to exercise on a regular basis. However, the level of activity varies widely across the breeds due to their temperaments and energy levels. While some breeds need serious training, others might just require a daily walk. All dogs like walking about though, so it is compulsory that at least a daily walk is done. These walks are good for their physical health, body shape and to maintain authority over them as their owner, thereby giving them a balanced mind. French Bulldogs also require regular walks. However, they are more weather observant. When walking a French Bulldog, ensure that the weather is not too hot or humid. Hot and humid weather can quickly become a life-threatening situation for them, so it is better avoided. It is safer for them very early in the morning or toward the end of the evening, when the sun is setting. Ensure that the location of the walk is open with shady spots because their body temperature needs to regulate. If there is shade, they can rest more and relax from the heat that may be rising within them. Also, fresh water should be available for them to drink in case they get thirsty. French Bulldogs are often better at temperatures that are less than 70 degrees Fahrenheit, or else they will begin to feel quite stressed and show signs such as panting and foamy saliva. Veterinarians generally advise that their breed not be exposed to tremendous heat. Thus, if these symptoms are exhibited, it means they have been exposed to too much heat and need to be cooled either by pouring cool water on them or moving them to a cool air-conditioned site. French Bulldogs, like every other dog, like to sniff the ground regularly. It is a habit for them so when you are walking your dog during a journey or just a regular time of relaxation, make sure that you let the dog stop at irregular periods and let them sniff the ground to find anything, or nothing sometimes. Dogs should have a reason to get excited. A dog that is just marching along with you would feel very bored if they

40

French Bulldog Secrets

just continue walking that way, so the best way to avoid boredom is to let them stop once in a while to sniff the ground while you go ahead to do something else on your own. You can do this while you are stopping just to get some fresh air or to stay under the shade.

An occasional stop to sniff enables your dogs to admire their surroundings and even allows them to get used to a particular place or memorize a specific walking distance or a walking trail. It also makes the walk enjoyable and memorable for them because they don't just become a burden to you, but they have free will to do what they like while they are walking. After sniffing for a little while, also let them rest and give them a small amount of water to cool off. Remember that while they are sniffing the ground, make sure whatever they put in their mouth isn’t dangerous for them so that they don't fall sick or contract any kind of disease or infection. Just like babies, ensure that you monitor them closely while they are sniffing.

CONCLUSION

To wrap up this book, I’d like to end it on the importance of safety. If you take your French Bulldog out for walks or to play often, you will notice that your dog might end up with cuts, scrapes or nicks. It is very likely that your dog might also get certain bumps and bruises. Thus it is very important that you have a first aid kit on hand every time, especially when going on holiday. Even though first aid kits might be recommended for outings, you should always ensure that you have a dedicated dog first aid kit available at home because accidents can happen at home too. There are several first aid kits that are specifically made for dogs. Some of them even have a bold inscription on them that they are "Canine Friendly." These are the kinds of kits that you should try to purchase. Dog first aid kits often contain products that are entirely different from human first aid kits. They also often come with a section for poo bags so you can fill it up with as many poo bags as you can so that you do not forget to take one with you when you are going out. A first aid kit often has antiseptic swabs to clean cuts, medical tapes for scrapes, bandages and plasters, and several other products. This is a perfect first aid kit for small breeds such as French Bulldogs. Buy a kit that is small enough to bring along with you if you are going for a journey. Also, try to add a "pet emergency" first aid manual to your first aid kit in case it doesn't come with one. You will need it to know what to do in an emergency. When it comes to little dogs such as French Bulldogs, what matters the most is their safety. You must always ensure that your dog is safe in the environment he is in. Safety is not just limited to the home. Safety for the dog includes external locations. When you take the dog out for a walk or to a particular location, you should be very wary of its safety. Make sure that your dog is safe from any sharp object or poisonous substance. Dogs are very fragile animals. French Bulldogs are smaller vulnerable animals. You wouldn't want to be somewhere and start looking for your dog earnestly because it is missing or because it is in pain and you do not understand why. Safety begins with watching to see what your dog takes into his mouth. Observe the environment your dog is in thoroughly to see if there are objects that can be swallowed, and make sure you remove it from his territory. Watch out for things like toothpaste or body cream that can smell nice to the dog. Apart from food, also take care of environmental waste and sticky things that can hide between your dog's wrinkles. Make sure your dog doesn't get too close to a pool, so it doesn't fall in and drown. Also ensure that when walking your dog on pavement or near a drop-off, monitor your dog closely so he doesn't lose his step and get hurt in the process. Monitor the other dogs or humans that he plays with, he might suddenly contract an infection after associating with a dog that has one. Take precautions as often as you can.

Whenever you are going on a journey, always pack some poop bags for your dog because you won’t know whether they are ready or not since they can't talk. Dogs cannot be asked if they are pressed or need to use the toilet urgently. Dogs cannot also be asked if they are extremely full after a meal or they need to eat a little so that they won’t have to poop on themselves. To avoid embarrassing situations like this, you should have a poop bag on you at all times. Forgetting a poop bag is the worst thing that can happen to you as a dog owner. You should always have at least a plastic bag on you at any time even when you are just out on a walk. You might get to a place where you can't just abandon the poop and move along. The owners of such territories might require that you clean up your dog's mess immediately. In that situation, you have to ensure that you keep such places tidy. No dog owner wants to be that person that suddenly gets embarrassed after their dog has done his thing. No matter how cute the dog is, you as the owner would be slightly embarrassed if you are unable to pick it up after. You will probably panic a little if there is no form of an object that can even serve as a bag replacement for that kind of situation. However, if there are walkers around, you shouldn't hesitate to ask them if they have extra poop bags on them. Prevention is better than being stranded. Frenchies are usually simple to look after and, on account of their size, don't require a large amount of living space. This dog is a perfect pet and doesn’t require excessive physical exercise. They also adapt very quickly in different accommodations, whether it is a wide open farmhouse or a small apartment. They are exceptional friends to the elderly. French Bulldogs can be quite a bundle of energy, but they're generally great pets to their owners. We’re enjoying our French Bulldogs because we know and understand them well. I’m sure you know more about your Frenchie now that you’ve read the book to this point. All you need to do now is to take action and start nurturing and training your Frenchie to be that wonderful pet you’ve always dreamt of having.

HOW TO GET A SHINY COAT FOR YOUR DOG

What happens when a person first encounters your dog? How many times have you heard or used this sentence: “Wooooow his coat is soooo shiny, how you do that?” Skin, hair and nails are the mirror of health of our dogs, and sometimes even though we give our best, the results are not always satisfactory. Life in the city has many advantages, both to us and to our pets. However, life in the city also carries its share of burdens: fast food, smog and exhaust gases. Furthermore, dogs live mostly in apartments and other smaller environments with a high concentration of dogs, which easily transfers all sorts of diseases. One such disease that greatly affects a dog’s coat is dermatitis. Central heating in the winter, and unhealthy, dirty mud with a high percentage of diesel fuel, are factors that result in a dull, brittle, and lifeless coat. In most pet shops you can find quick "shine restorers" and volume increasers. There are various products for every budget and taste. Indeed, after one bathing, dogs shine like in the commercials. Mink oil spray gives even better results: high gloss, soft coat, easy combing and trimming. Ideal! Unfortunately, this is an instant solution only, not a lasting one. Even though the prices of these products are often reasonable, they don’t offer the long lasting results that are ultimately desired. Thus, the main drawbacks of these “solutions” are that after the first rain or the first game in the park, the shine either reduces or is completely eliminated. When the chemistry of these “solutions” is removed, what remains is what nature has given your dog. Yes, exactly right, as with everything else, genetics is a significant factor in the “shiny” coat. In other words, a good, high quality, glossy coat is a matter of genetics, at least as much as a good diet and care. Genetics can't be changed, but is there a way to help your dog? Of course! With minimal effort you will get the maximum results in 10 days time, while not spending a fortune for shampoos and conditioners. When very bad food is given, no matter what were doing, no matter what kind of genetics it has, your dog will never be more than average. So, a good diet is "a must.” One of the most common reasons for bad hair (dull, aged, brittle, flaky skin, and even allergic reactions) is inadequate nutrition. Maybe you're feeding your dog the best in the world, but... It is not that simple. Your dog is an individual. Therefore, it is extremely important to find a food (probably to feed a dog dehydrogenase - granules) that will fulfill all its nutritional needs, including shiny, flattened, healthy hair and skin. Too often, swimming is also one of the leading reasons for a bad coat. Almost all dogs (except and similar races, mostly small) have an oily undercoat that

44

French Bulldog Secrets

keeps them from the weather and maintains the natural pH of the skin. With frequent bathing you actually are removing a dog’s natural "film." By doing this you will dry out the skin, thus automatically shutting off the self-defending mechanism of the oily undercoat. When the skin dries, your dog is prone to dandruff, dermatitis, and other various reactions. If we add "quality" cheap shampoos, a dog’s coat shows us exactly the way they are. Remember that dog shampoos, GOOD dog shampoos or soap in general, do not in themselves leave a trace. It is easier to assess them when they swim—if lots of suds come off, not good! Additionally, it is important to rinse the dog off after swimming. Most dog owners wash shower or while Creve see that pen out from the dog's coat. It's not enough. Because undercoat that is natural "shield,“ the dog must flush and when there are no visible signs of foam that shampoos. If (and this is almost always true) shampoo remains, the dog will appear to have “dandruff” for a short time, which is a mistake. Also, the remains of shampoo can cause extra dry hair and irritate the dog's skin.

Molting (shedding) is a natural process (except for dogs that otherwise would not shed, such as poodles and related breeds) that cannot be stopped. Nor should it be. The dog must be prepared for the coming season according to temperature. What you need to know is that shedding dead hair (depending on the season and undercoat) makes room for a healthy, shiny coat. Therefore, if you have more hair around the house than usual, and it seems that your dog is shedding too much, do not panic, because in a few weeks, your pet’s coat will shine. And now I will introduce you to the "snacks" that will change the life of your dog (and maybe yours, if you want them to):
