Kungur, the third and one of the oldest cities in the Perm province is famous for two things: its rich history as a wealthy trade (especially tea) town and its peculiar Kungur Ice Caves. Although caves are very common in the whole Ural Mountain area, none are so rich in history and are so well-known in Russia as the cave in the bowels of the Kungur Ice Mountain. According to scientists, the cave is 10- 12 thousand years of age. Some 100 grottoes and 60 lakes are connected by nearly 6 kilometres of fancifully-branched underground passages. The grottoes host stalagmite columns, stalactite icicles (reaching over 2 metres) and ice / snow patterns.
