Top-10 for Larson at Chicagoland

The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series (NSCS) made its one and only stop at Chicagoland Speedway as the first round of the playoffs for the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup officially began. Although the No. 42 Target team is not in the playoffs, they looked to play the spoiler role again this season during the Chase. Larson started Sunday’s race in 18th position and, after some early adjustments on the Clorox Chevy, steadily improved his running order to secure a seventh-place finish.

The weekend started with qualifying being cancelled on Friday due to rain. As a result, Sunday’s starting order was set by speeds from the first practice, where Larson was 18th quickest as the team worked to find a good balance for longer race runs. The team continued to make gains with the Clorox Chevy on Saturday, improving the car’s drive on both long and short runs and finding a setup that allowed Larson to move around the track.

After starting the race in 18th with a car that was tight-handling, Larson managed the balance issues early in the race and moved up several spots prior to the first on Lap 50. Following the first stop, the car’s handling was too loose, but Larson again did a good job holding his position and gaining a few spots before the team could make adjustments to find the right balance. Over the final 130 laps of the 267-lap race, Larson raced inside the top-10 and briefly took the lead with just under 100 laps to go as teams cycled through pit road for green flag stops. Although he had to give up the top spot in order to pit, he remained in the top-10 and ultimately finished in seventh place, the highest finish for a non-Chase driver.

With the finish, Larson remains in 19th in the NSCS driver point standings.

NOTES OF INTEREST:

• Larson was the highest finishing non-Chase driver • Larson had 108 green flag passes, tying him with two other drivers for fourth most • Larson ran all three NASCAR Series races this weekend, logging 851 laps for a total of 1,276 miles. • The caution flag was shown six times for a total of 28 laps • The lead changed 17 times among 10 drivers

TCGRFS QUOTEBOARD

Kyle Larson, No. 42 Clorox Chevrolet SS – “The Target team had another good race today. We were a bit off on the balance at the beginning, starting tight then getting loose on the second run, but the guys did a good job working on the Clorox Chevy to get the car better. After we got the balance where it needed to be, our car was pretty good. I probably could have had a couple more spots on the final restart, but happy with another top-10 finish for our team.”

First Chase Race Nets 16th-Place Result for McMurray at Chicagoland

Chicagoland Speedway hosted the first round of the 2015 Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup (Chase). Jamie McMurray, one of the 16 competitors in the Challenger Round of the Chase, started from the 13th position and managed and ill-handling car in the early running, to bring home a 16th-place finish.

Torrential rains on Friday afternoon forced the cancellation of qualifying at Chicagoland Speedway, which required the starting line-up to be determined by first practice speeds. McMurray would roll-off from 13th and ran among the top-15 throughout most of the event. Long green-flag runs made it difficult to make major adjustments to the car, forcing the No. 1 team a lap down before the halfway point of the 267-lap race.

McMurray would work to race back into the Lucky Dog position when the caution waved on lap-139, regaining a spot on the lead lap. Unfortunately two more long green-flag runs hampered the chance to adjust on the handling and McMurray would ultimately cross the finish line 16th.

With his finish, McMurray is currently 13th in the 2015 Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup standings.

NOTES OF INTEREST  McMurray is currently ranked 13th of the 16 driver in the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup standings, just three points out of 12th and the final cutoff of the three race Challenger Round  The MyAfibRisk.com 400 was slowed by caution six times for 28 laps

Jamie McMurray – No. 1 McDonald’s/Cessna Chevrolet SS: - “This wasn’t quite the day we were hoping for. We started out pretty strong, but my car just really went away after our second pit stop. Matt (McCall) and the guys made some good adjustments and got the car much better, but we had to battle for track-position and just never got the cautions to fall our way. The McDonald’s/Cessna Chevy was pretty good at the end, we just came up short on track- position.”

With a reset of the points to begin the 2015 Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup, McMurray will be in 12th-position heading to the first race of the Challenger Round next week at Chicagoland Speedway.

NSCS teams will run the Sylvania 300 New Hampshire Motor Speedway next Sunday, Sept. 27. NBC Sports Network will have live coverage beginning at 2 p.m. EDT.
