STUDIES ON PESTS IN 4 COCONUT CULTIVARS IN LAMPUNG PROVINCE By Wily A. Baringbing and Bariyah-Baringbing 1 ABSTRACT A three-year field study to investigate species of pests on four (4) coconut cultivars: PB-1 21, PB-111, KH17VA-1 and dwarf Salak, was carried out in Lampung province involving 11 visits from November 1991 to April 1993. Only two regencies: Lampung Utara and Lampung Tengah with 3 and l sub-districts, respectively were surveyed But only three sub-districts of Lampung Utara: Sungkai Selatan, Manggala and Mesuji and only Terbanggi Besar in Lampung Tengah were studied Observations of Brontispa longissima Gestro, Plesispa reichei Chapuis, Oryctes rhinoceros Linnaeus, Xylotropus Gideon (Linnaeus), Rhynchophorus vulneratus (Panzer), and the others were studied. Results of the study showed that no cultivars were resistant to any species of pests in Lampung province. There were 19 species of pests, 2 of which do not belong to the insect present in the 2 regencies. The 17 species of insects belong to 4 orders including: Coleoptera, Lepidoptera, Homoptera and Orthoptera in 3, 5, 1 and l families, respectively. INTRODUCTION Lampung province is one of the potential areas for developing some industrial crops including coconut for the land is broad with low-land area, and the population is relatively low (Baringbing, 1992c). Statistics show that the province ranks 7 in the number of coconut palms planted at 177,691 hectares. From the 1989 data, we could see the increased land utilization at the rate of 9.68% per annum. (Anonymous, 1989; 1990). Even with this, coconut area in Lampung only constitute 5.3 3 % of the total coconut area in Indonesia with an average production of 111,890 tons of copra or 5.01% of national production. -

The total land area of the islands is about 8,293 sq km with a coastline of 1,962 km. -

To date, a total of 50 mammal species, 139 bird species, 60 herpetofauna species, 46 freshwater fish species, 184 butterfly species and 223 tree species have been detected in the study area. - This diversity is remarkably representative of species assemblages across Sulawesi as a whole, given the size of the study area. Buton comprises only around 3% of the total land area of the Sulawesi sub- region, but 62% of terrestrial birds, 42% of snakes and 33% of butterflies known to occur in the region have been found here. - Faunal groups in the forests of Buton also display high incidence of endemism; 83% of native non- volant mammals, -

Biodiversitasx 18: 500-506. The main purpose of this study was to examine the effects of degradation and fragmentation habitats to butterfly communities. To be specific, species diversity, taxonomy structure, main species in every study sites were observed to find out the effects and correlation of each parameters. Field study was carried out in 8 sites in Kotawaringin Barat, Central Kalimantan Province, Indonesia. The specimens were collected using aerial insect nets and baited traps in January-February 2016. From the result of the study, the total of 1085 individual in 130 species was successfully collected. Based on distribution analysis using Shannon-Wiener index, the diversity of butterfly was in the range of middle to high categories (H’ = 2.7-3.5). Of another parameter analysis, it showed that butterfly communities were affected by degradation habitat, while fragmentation habitat did not influence to the butterfly communities. Furthermore, the range of degradation level in the study sites did not correlate with the number of species and taxonomy structures, but the distribution of the special-group of main species showed in correlation. -

JUMALON Univ. of San Carlos, Cebu City, PHILIPjPINES Few are the hamlets and countrysides in the Philippines where Amathusia phidippus (Linne), a large brown butterfly, is not a familiar sight at twilight. Its hasty, jumpy flight, large size, and habit of gamboling if several are around, sets it apart from other crepuscular fliers such as species of the satyrid genus M elanitis. Likewise, one seldom comes across banana and coconut groves which do not have a colony of a form of phidippus. Cebu's subspecies is Amathusia phidippus pollicaris Fruh. In past years, there was no recorded or reported instance of pronounced abundance of this butterfly, that is, inside of this somewhat limited area, although in February 1954 about twenty pupae were brought indoors by children for hatching, all taken at the area under treatment in this article. In respect to their crepuscular activity, and frequency of encounter with immature stages in recent years, no sign of abnormalcy was noted. The same is true with observations made in parts of western Leyte and the provinces of Agusan, Surigao, and Davao in Mindanao in 1960-62. From the latter part of December 1961 to the latter part of yIarch 1962, this twilight beauty has multiplied in numbers which to perennial ob servers is beyond normalcy. The area of infestation in the suburb of Cebu City is less than a square kilometer, and involves the districts of Labangon, Mambaling, and Punta Princesa. -
