Position: Outside Plant Technician

Reports To: Outside Plant Manager

Location: Idaho Falls, Idaho

Status: Full Time, Non-exempt

General Summary: Syringa Networks is pleased to announce recruitment for an Outside Plant Technician. The primary responsibilities of the Outside Plant Technician will be to maintain control of outside plant (OSP) activities around assigned work sites, taking and maintaining accurate field notes, supporting project timelines, and inspecting, designing and providing accurate Staking Sheets for projects.

The ideal candidate for this position will have extensive and solid knowledge of construction experience, outside plant, engineering background and a minimum 1 year of related experience with planning and design of Fiber Optic Network construction and Microwave Interconnect facilities. A degree in Civil, Mechanical or Electrical Engineering preferred but any engineering discipline is acceptable. The secondary responsibility will be central office activities, troubleshooting, and maintenance activities. On call duties and overtime may be required periodically.

Personal computer skills are required as well as knowledge and operation of Microsoft Office applications, and general purpose terminal emulation programs. The ability to work with existing automated, electronic, and paper records will be required.

Other duties, responsibilities and qualifications may be required and/or assigned.

Essential Job Functions: Build graphical worksheets for contractors use: • Obtain the ability to read Staking Sheets, Idaho Transportation Dept. (ITD)/Utah Dept of Transportation (UDOT) prints. • Learn the required information and templates that are used for creating the Staking Sheets. • Develop Syringa Networks Drafting technique in Visio and other required programs.

Perform work in accordance with industry standards: • Be familiar with RUS standards. • Ability to read and follow the design engineer’s instructions and specifications. • Maintain the scope of work on the project.

• Adhere to safety procedures.

Prepare engineering field notes: • Interpret buried underground and aerial telecom facilities in records, on maps and in the field with sufficient clarity and detail. • Facilitate conversion into CAD and Visio Programs. • Make recommendations for changes in running line or construction methodologies due to knowledge of or experience in environmental conditions, construction access by crews, or congestion of utilities.

Enter and maintain outside plant records: • Develop, implement, and maintain all engineering, drafting and facilities records, through work order preparation and processing.

Participate in engineering, permitting, and construction processes in order to support the project contract: • Knowledge in standard Permitting processes and companies. • Ability to communicate clearly with contractors.

Experience in splicing preparation for both ribbon and loose tube fiber: • Determine correct procedures for OSP fiber optic splicing. • Prepare and maintain splicing records and diagrams. • Experience in terminating and testing of fiber optic fusion splicing.

Perform route maintenance: • Recognize and repair route issues including Hand Hole cleanup, sign placement, and weed control. • Be willing to learn how to locate fiber optic cable.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: • Knowledge of design techniques, tools, and principles involved in production of precision technical plans, blueprints, drawings, and models. • Must be able to perceive differences in wire and cable colors. • Must have working experience/knowledge of current computerized operations, CAD systems, and Visio. • Proficiency with PC based programs such as Microsoft applications. • Skills in written communication for correspondence. • Ability to work with clients regarding engineering problems, confer with customer representatives while communicating work with Outside Plant Supervisor. • Ability to be a team player. • Ability to make a good decision based on information given. • Ability to learn new products, procedures, and programs. • Ability to pay close attention to detail, and make sound decision using information at hand. • Hold a valid Driver’s License.

• Multitask and be organized under pressured daily issues.

Education and Experience:

• One year experience of construction with Outside Plant Telecom Engineering. • A degree in Civil, Mechanical or Electrical Engineering preferred (any engineering discipline acceptable). • Desirable work experience includes field engineering and project lead responsibility. Supervisory experience a plus. • Strong computer skills with Microsoft applications. • In-depth understanding of technology based services, products and networking. • Experience in Project Management a plus.
