THE BUCHANAN SISTERS KATE AND CAROLINE AN AQHYA WORLD TO REMEMBER

Kate and Caroline Buchanan The 2020 AQHYA Youth World will go down in the record books for so many reasons; COVID-19, two Youth World shows at the same time and Kate and Caroline Buchanan both winning World Championships. It was an AQHYA World full of firsts and lasts; first World Championship for both girls, with it being the last Youth World for Kate, as she is 19 this year. Both girls rode multiple horses in multiple events, at times even sharing a horse or two. Caroline was first in the winner’s circle with Smokin Paleface in the . Besting her preliminary score by 1 point, the finals score of 222.5 jumped to the lead with only one horse left to go. Kate had a spectacular last day of the show, making it back with both her horses, Cats Roxstar and Clutch Mon - tana in both the Heading and Heeling. The Heading was exciting as Kate tied for the win riding Clutch Montana and had to run-off for the World title with Trail Townsend. Going first in the run- off she came out with ice in her veins and roped like a pro. She had almost the exact same run in the finals, but Trail ended up with the higher score, so Kate won the Reserve Championship. The Heeling was next, Kate was riding both her horses again in the finals, but it was Cats Roxstar who was the star, winning going away by 4 points. Yes, indeed Kate and Caroline each took home a gold trophy, however that does not start to sum up their week of competing at the show. Kate was Re - serve Champion Heading with Clutch Montana, 7th in Ranch Riding on Cats Roxstar, 7th in Working Cowhorse with A Time For Jazz and a finalist in the Working Cowhorse on Lucky Cee Blair. Caroline was 4th with Thats A Lotta 6 • Arizona Quarter Horse Association • www.azqha.org Boon in Ranch Riding, and 7th in Box - ing with A Time For Jazz. It has been a great equine journey since coming to Arizona in 2012. The Buchanan family relocated to Arizona eight years ago. Bryan Buchanan started his mobile Veterinary practice and Anne continued competing in USEF Young and Developing Horse classes. Anne made the USEF finals at Lamplight on her mare, Rosette B in the 5 & 6 class in 2017 & 2018. With this kind of background, it was a natural that both the girls grew up wanting to com - pete on horseback. Starting out in Pony Club, both competing in jumping, their love of horses began. Caroline found her love of Reining after moving to Ari - zona. Kate started showing Working Cowhorses and began roping. In 2014 Kate won her first AQHYA World Champion trophy in Reining with In It For The Chics, placing third. In 2019 Kate and Clutch Montana won Caroline and Smokin Paleface Reserve Champions in Heading. Also last year she was third in Ranch Riding nals. Then in June, she also won the pion Level 1 Mother’s Day Slide Non and Working Cowhorse with Lucky Cee 2020 NRCHA Derby Non Pro Bridle Pro Derby in May with Smokin Pale - Blair. The trophies are stacking up at the Buchanan home! Caroline would like to thank Craig Schmersal for his help in the Reining and Corey Cushing in the Boxing. These two dedicated, hard-working, and ultra-talented sisters have another thing in common; they would like to thank their parents for all their support. “Our horses are the best and they come to every event to cheer us on. Bronwyn pre-Shadd

For those that know Bronwyn McCormick, her transformation in the show ring has been fun to experience. Bronwyn now owns some of the fanciest cowhorses in the industry. What you may not know about Bronwyn is her determina - tion, dedication, support of her friends and the ability to laugh at herself. She was telling her story at a recent show and it is one that needs re- telling. "I started riding with the National Versatility Ranch Horse Association in 2011. I had a horse that I was just trail riding at the time. I was get - ting bored with that and wanted to try something a little more challenging. I could not even lope a circle when I started! After several years of VRH shows, I started noticing how good all the people were at the NRCHA shows. I really wanted to participate but was very intimidated. I didn’t have a trainer and had no idea where you could find horses like that. I didn’t have the courage to even talk to a trainer.” “In 2014, I attended the Rookie Days Clinic at Bella Vista Ranch. Everyone was so friendly and wonderful. I could not believe that these great trainers would give up their valuable time to work with novice people like myself. We spent a Bronwyn pre-Shadd Saturday rotating between the trainers: Corey Cushing, Kevin Stallings, Shadd Parkinson & 16 • Arizona Quarter Horse Association • www.azqha.org Brad Barkemeyer. I watched Shadd stopping his horse. He had the great - est stops I had ever seen. I decided I really wanted to learn from him, so I asked him for his business card which, of course, he didn’t have. Somehow I got in touch with him and I started taking lessons. And then I started looking for a horse to buy. I don’t know if I would have ever gotten up the nerve to start training with Shadd if it had not been for the clinic. He has been the best trainer I could ask for. Shadd has a way of letting you go out and attempt a maneuver, watching you flounder around trying to find your way, then finally stepping in and telling you how to fix everything.” “And my story would not be com - plete without mentioning Sue Schmitz and Sue Michelson. Thanks to them, I got a complete wardrobe makeover! I have never spent so much money in my life on clothing! I had to get rid of my hat with the stampede string and my batwing chaps. Not to mention that I had no idea you were supposed to match your shirt to your saddle blanket!” “I think I have come a long way, but there is still a long way to go on this journey. You can never say that you know it all when it comes to the Working Cowhorse. It is such a diffi - cult event, and then doing all three

enents; the herd work, the reining and the fence, makes it super tough. That is what makes it so challenging and so rewarding.” Bronwyn owns and shows Metal Storm in the Boxing, which Shadd is also showing in the Open Bridle class at the big NRCHA shows. “Tin Man” as he is known has over $26,753 in NRCHA earnings. Bronwyn’s practice horse, Mamas Time Traveler, has had to step up since her other horse coliced last year. He has NRCHA earnings of $3,260. Bronwyn also owns and shows Patron Cat who is in training with Al Dunning for cutting events. CR Sucha Smart Tuff, aka “Benson” recently was purchased by Bronwyn and is now in training with Shadd Parkinson. Benson is a 2019 colt by Woody Be Tough out of a High Brow Cat mare. She laughingly says, “This one is the 2021 NRCHA Snaffle Bit winner!” Thank you Bronwyn for your persistence and optimism. We could all take a lesson from you.
