Kalakshetra Foundation ANNUAL REPORT Featured on the cover of this Annual Report is the Padma Pushkarini, an amphitheater constructed around a lily pond situated in the Kalakshetra campus. It was opened on 29th November 2010 and it has granite pavilions and steps. INTRODUCTION

KALAKSHETRA FOUNDATION

Founded in the year 1936 by the legendary cultural ambassador Smt. , Kalakshetra Foundation was declared as an Institution of National Importance by an Act of Parliament in 1993. The pioneering vision of Smt. Rukmini Devi’s philosophical bedrock of ‘art without vulgarity, beauty without cruelty and education without fear’ inspires Kalakshetra.

As a leading institution for teaching and Carnatic Music in the country, Kalakshetra creates a cultural ambience which nurtures the various units under it, which include the Rukmini Devi College of Fine Arts which is devoted to Bharatanatyam, Carnatic Music and the visual arts, two high schools, a centre for weaving and natural dyeing and printing, two libraries that address the knowledge- based needs of students and scholars alike on arts and its allied subjects; and a hostel for school and college students.

Between April 2016 and March 2017,Kalakshetra Foundation has been involved in a range of activities in consonance with its vision to promote ’s ancient culture and set a standard of true art. Towards this, it has focussed on festivals, workshops, lectures, enhancement of its repertoire, performances, field trips, research and documentation projects as well as hosted several high profile visitors to its campus.

This report places on record the various efforts undertaken by the institution during this period. It consists of the following sections:

Annual Report 2016 -17 3 The pond at Padma Pushkarini is Kalakshetra’s effort to preserve the natural resource. The amphitheater has been named after Padmasini, who was a caretaker at the hostel four decades ago. She was like a mother to the students and a big support to Rukmini Devi. The Padma Pushkarini is proving to be a valuable and unique performance space at Kalakshetra

It is the main administrative unit which handles administrative and accounts matters of all the units of Kalakshetra Foundation in a centralised manner.

1.1. APPOINTMENTS

During the year 2016-17, no regular appointments were made. However, we have engaged Consultants for Museum, Theatre, Library, Outreach, Admin and for Accounts on contract basis on functional needs. We have also engaged teachers for two Schools run by the Foundation and faculty for the Rukmini Devi College of Fine Arts against existing vacancies and to meet the additional requirement.

Under the Swacch Bharat Abhiyanthe staff and students engaged themselves in cleanliness drives to keep the campus clean.

1.4 TREE PLANTATION

Chennai was battered by the Vardah Cyclone in December 2016. In the cyclone, a large number of trees were uprooted and branches of several trees broken in the Foundation campus. The green cover of the campus took a severe beating. To compensate the green cover loss, periodical tree plantation drives were arranged. Regular walkers to the Foundation, staff, student, eminent artists were involved in this plantation drives. More than 300 saplings were planted during 2016- 17 and the saplings are taken care of regularly. In harmony with nature only natural manure is applied to these saplings.

1.5 ANIMAL WELFARE

Animal Welfare was one of the foremost ideals of Smt. Rukmini Devi, the Founder of Kalakshetra. The Animal Welfare Board of India was set up by the Founder in the year 1962. She was the first Chairperson of the Board and remained on the board till her demise in the year 1986. She was also instrumental in getting Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act enacted. Following the principles of the Founder, KF has also been taking care of dogs in its premises since long. About 50 dogs are taken care of by the Foundation including their medical care. A few volunteers help the Foundation in this effort.

1.6 RENTING OUT OF SPACES

To generate internal revenue, Kalakshetra Foundation grounds are rented out for holding of art and craft related exhibitions. During the year 2016-17, renting out of the premises earned a revenue of Rs.59,75,390/-. The revenue earned during the previous financial year i.e. 2015-16 was Rs.42,59,859/-.

10 II. RUKMINIDEVI COLLEGE OF FINE ARTS

The prestigious Rukmini Devi College of Fine Arts (RDCFA) is the flagship institution of the Foundation and haslong been considered the pinnacle of cultural education and artistic achievement in Carnatic Music and Bharatanatyam. To supplement rigorous class room training, field trips, guest lectures and dissertation work were arranged.As an educational institution, Kalakshetra is committed to exploring opportunities to expand its knowledge-base and its repertoire. During this year, several such opportunities were organised, which included a diversity of workshops and lectures, enriching the depth and breadth of the curriculum.As part of its commitment to support meritorious students, the Foundation awarded scholarships under various schemes.

2.1. VIDYARAMBHAM

Admission to four year Diploma Course: For the academic year 2016-17, Kalakshetra Foundation received 96applications forfour-year Diploma courses in Bharatanatyam, Carnatic Music and Visual Arts. Based on aptitude test, physical fitness test, psychological test and interview, admission was given to:

34 students to pursue Diploma in Bharatanatyam 13 students to pursue Diploma in Carnatic Music 2 students to pursue Diploma in Visual Arts

Admission to two- year Post Diploma Course: 12 students were admitted Post Diploma in Bharatanatyam and 3 students for Post Diploma in Carnatic Music.

First year students commenced their academic journey with Vidyarambham on June 27, 2016 an auspicious day. Acclaimed Bharatanatyam dancer Ms. was the special guest of the day. She blessed the new students for a successful academic year.

2.2 ANNUAL CONVOCATION

The Annual Convocation for the Rukmini Devi College of Fine Arts was held at the Rukmini Arangam on 6 January 2017. Justice (Retd.) Smt. Prabha Sridevan was the chief guest. The distribution of the certificates was followed by Carnatic music and Bharatanatyam margam performances by the graduating students. Six Post Diploma and Twenty-Four

2.3 FIELD TRIPS

As part of the annual academic activity of the Rukmini Devi College of Fine Arts, students were taken on field trips to strengthen their understanding of the historical, socio-political, economic, religious, ritualistic, artistic and above all, the philosophical importance of Indian culture. Some trips are specific and some are common to students of dance, music and the visual arts departments. The places of field trips were:

1st year: Theosophical Society, Museum and – all in Chennai 2nd year: Kanchipuram temples 3rd year: Chidambaram 4th year: Thanjavur, Kumbakonam and Thiruvarur

2.4 MENTORSHIP SCHEME

Mentors are senior, eminent, professional artists who are invited to extend their unique perspectives based on their extensive experience and nurture the students. The primary motivation of the mentorship is to identify the areas of strengths and areas requiring improvement of every student and provide them an experienced guidance in addressing their gaps and honing their weak points.From September 2016- March 2017, 31 senior eminent professional artistes were invited to extend their unique perspectives, based on their extensive experience. 15 mentors for music students conducted a total of 325.5 hours of mentoring and 16 mentors for dance conducted a total of 211 hours of mentoring.

2.5 PALLAVA AND KRITI : PART TIME COURSES

It is a part time evening courses in dance, music and visual arts, for the age of 7- 16 years. Classes are held 10 days a month between 4:30p.m. and 5:30p.m. with short vacation during the months of October & January and summer vacation between mid-April and mid-January.Retired faculty members from Kalakshetra and distinguished alumni who live in Chennai are invited to teach here. Young children thereby have the singular opportunity to learn from the most experienced dancers and teachers. It is a 6 years certified course in dance and music and one year certified course in Visual arts.

Kalakshetra Foundation conducted a five-days’ Arts Management Workshop from 22 July 2016 to 26 July 2016in collaboration with CCRT, Delhi, for the students of dance and music in the third and fourth year Diploma; first and second year Post Diploma Courses of Rukmini Devi College of Fine Arts. This workshop introduced the students to various aspects of Arts Management and made them understand ideas like brand building in the arts, arts management, arts-related policies, cultural tourism and arts entrepreneurship. 4.1 ANNUAL FESTIVALS

Annual Art Festival, Remembering Rukmini Devi Festival and Kathakali Festival are the three Annual Festivals conducted by Kalakshetra Foundation. They are prestigious and highly-rated art festivals of Chennai.

4.1.1 THE ANNUAL ART FESTIVAL: 26 JANUARY - 2 FEBRUARY 2017

The 64th Annual art Festival which was originally scheduled to be held in December 2016 had to be re-scheduled to January 2017 owing to cyclone Vardah which battered Chennai in which the thatched roof of Rukmini Aragam Theatre was badly damaged. A temporary roof was installed for the Theatre for conducting the Annual Art Festival. The eight days Festival was ahuge success and more than 4000 rasikas witnessed the festival. It showcased performances by acclaimed artists and Kalakshetra Foundation’s own repertoire. “Koormavataram”, the renowned dance drama composed by Papanasam Sivan for Kalakshetra was revived for this festival and marked the inaugural performance. Kalakshetra also performed three parts out of the six-part vintage Ramayana collection choreographed by Rukmini Devi viz. Sabari Moksham, Choodamani Pradanam and Mahapattabhishekam as a fitting finale to the Art Festival.

18 Annual Report 2016 -17 19 4.1.2 REMEMBERING RUKMINI DEVI FESTIVAL: 26 FEBRUARY - 2 MARCH 2017

The birthday of Smt. Rukmini Devi, founder of Kalakshetra Foundation is celebrated in the month of February every year as Remembering Rukmini Devi Festival.In the 5 days’ festival eminent artists and Kalakshetra’s own repertoire performed. The festival started off with the Indian premiere of ‘Saraswati Antarvaahini’, a new dance production of Kalakshetra on the river Saraswathi. Kalakshetra repertory had also performed ‘Sri Purandara’ and ‘Koormavataram’ dance dramas.

The festival also featured the following performances by other artists— (i) Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore’s dance drama Chitrangada in by Smt. Ranjana Gauhar & students (ii) Kirshna – The Liberator in Kathak by the students of Smt. Shama Bhate (iii) Carnatic Vocal Recital by Sri T.M.Krishna

The Festival was attended to by more than 1500 people.

4.1.3 KATHAKALI FESTIVAL: 6 - 10 SEPTEMBER 2016

The Annual Kathakali Festival Bhava Bhavanam, ‘Vyvidhya’ was presented from 6 to 10 September 2016. It was well received by the audience and it provided a platform for many of young artists within our college.The performances featured were:

4.2 NEW PRODUCTIONS

4.2.1 SARASWATHI ANTHARVAAHINI: 26 FEBRUARY 2017

A new production was created on the river Saraswathiwhich isbased on myths and songs that have carried the history of the geography and culture of Bharatha. The nature of myths, symbols and the inner resources have their ways of revelation into the mystery of colour and vocabulary of tone within tone. The river Saraswathi is an “Antarvaahini”, an unexplored universe of space, sound, colour, word and lives in the mindscape of myriad hues of people who have inhabited Bhaarathavarsha for centuries. This new production was premiered in Esplanade, Singapore and was performed on the first day of Remembering Rukmini Devi Festival 2017 at Kalakshetra. This was envisaged by Kalakshetra Repertory under the supervision of Smt. Priyadarsini Govind, Director, Kalakshetra Foundation.

Annual Report 2016 -17 21 4.2.2 VAHANAS - THE PATH TO MOKSHA: 29 MARCH 2017

Vahanas was a new choreography by Sri K.P. Rakesh, Kalakshetra faculty based on the mount which carries a Hindu deity. A talk by Sri Pradeep Chakravarthy was conducted based on a book by the speaker exploring the philosophy of the temple Vahanas. This was performed on 29 March 2017 at Rukmini Arangam. With a focus on mythology and its social reflection, Kalakshetra hopes to further develop this concept into a possible production in the future.

4.3 OTHER FESTIVALS, COLLABORATIVE EVENTS & PERFORMANCES

4.3.1 SVANUBHAVA: 22-24 AUGUST 2016

This is an annual collaborative festival with Svanubhava designed and curated by youngsters, mostly in the performing arts world and meant for youngsters who are learning music, dance or any form of art.This was conducted from 22 to 24August 2016 at Rukmini Arangam. This reached out specifically to new and young audience focusing on schools. Every event had approximately 500 in audience. 4.3.2 PRASAARANA: 20 TO 23 SEPTEMBER 2016

The second year of the Prasaarana Festival – a unique off-campus festival featuring performances and lecture demonstrations by staff and students of Kalakshetra at a main stream venue within Chennai was held from 20 – 23 September 2016 at Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan. This festival not only allowed a diverse set of audiences to be introduced to the traditions of Kalakshetra and what it is offering, but also served as an ideal platform to create exposure to the students and staff of Kalakshetra while showcasing their works and talent.

Kalakshetra Foundation was invited on 7th March 2017 to deliver a workshop at Chennai High School Irusappa street, , Chennai as a part of collaborative program with Natyarangam. Hour-long lecture-demonstrations in Bharatanatyam was conducted.

4.3.4 CHENNAI WATER FORUM: 6 - 8 OCTOBER 2016

This collaborative event with Goethe-Institute Chennai/MaxMuller Bhavan was a three-day multi-disciplinary platform where fifty experts from Germany, India and Korea discussed about water in Chennai through participatory workshops, panel discussions and presentations. The Forum, an open platform on water, urbanization and ecology was organized as part of ‘Embrace Our River’ which had participatory workshops, panel discussions, presentations, exhibitions and concerts.

4.3.5 BANI FESTIVAL: 15- 16 OCTOBER 2016

This second edition of the 2-day festival featured a vocal concert by Sanjay Subrahmanyam and a Kathak performance by Kadambh, choreographed by Kumudhini Lakhia.

4.3.6 SUVRITTI: TRAVERSING CREATIVE ENERGIES 26 - 29 NOVEMBER 2016

The festival featured the choreographic works of eminent performing artists from around the country. The performances followed a 45 minute conversation with the artist that focused on engaging the rasikas and students in particular with the artists’ creative process in conceiving and developing their work. Apart from Bharatanatyam, four different classical dance styles including Sattriya from the North East were featured. A focus group of students from different dance schools in Chennai was created to explore the creative process in a systematic manner through group discussions.

24 4.3.7 ABHINAVAGUPTA SEMINAR: A REVERENTIAL REVELATION OF ETERNAL RELEVANCE: 24 - 25 JANUARY2017

To commemorate the 1000thyear of Poet-Philosopher Acharya Abhinavagupta, a National Seminar was organised by Kalakshetra Foundation in collaboration with IGNCA, New Delhi, Chennai and Bharata-Ilango Foundation for Asian Culture, Chennai at Rukmini Arangam. This seminar was convened by Dr. with the participation of eminent scholars.

4.3.8 DHRUPAD FESTIVAL: 3- 5 MARCH 2017

4.5 TRADITIONAL EVENTS 4.5.1 KARTHIGAI SOMAVARAM

The music students and staff of Kalakshetra rendered bhajans on the auspicious day of Karthigai Somavaram which has been in practice since the time of Smt. Rukmini Devi Arundale.

4.5.2 VIDYARAMBHAM

On 11thOctober, 2016, Vijayadasmi, Vidyarambham was conducted with the re-opening of college after the Navrathri holidays.

4.5.3 FOUNDATION DAY

The 80th Foundation day was celebrated on 6 January 2017 at Rukmini Arangam. There were readings from the writings of Smt. Rukmini Devi followed by an excerpt from “Sita Swayamvaram” (wedding scene) performed by the Kalakshetra Repertory.

28 4.5.4 THYAGARAJA ARADHANA

The “Thyagaraja Aradhana” was celebrated on 16February 2017. A procession by students, faculty and staff of Kalakshetra Foundation from RukminiArangamwas taken out to Sri and back. Thyagaraja’s Pancharathna Kritis were rendered.

4.5.5 SWACHH BHARAT ABHIYAN

As part of Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, Kalakshetra Foundation has been regularly conducting cleaning events in and around the campus. Staff and students together work as a team in these events and ensure cleanliness of the campus.

4.5.6 ALUMINI DAY

The Second Alumni Day was celebrated on Dr. ’s Birthday which falls on 1 December. Following prayer, senior Alumni from India and abroad reflected on the influence of Kalakshetra in their life and in their artistic activities. The highlight of the event was a passionate sharing by senior teacher Sharada Hoffman.

5.1 OUTREACH WORKSHOPS IN PUNE

Kalakshetra’s Outreach Workshop in Bharatanatyam was conducted in Pune, Maharashtra, in collaboration with Nrityayatri Art Movement. This ten-day intensive course was held between 24 - 31May 2016 and taught by four faculty members of the Rukmini Devi College of Fine Arts– Smt. Jyolsna Menon, Smt. Nirmala Nagaraj Sri K.P.Rakesh and Sri Sibi Sudarsan.A total of 70 students registered for the camp – 20 for the Basic Level, 30 for Intermediate and 20 for the Advanced Level. The workshop received a very good feedback from both the students and the host organisation.

5.2 MADRAS WEEK CELEBRATIONS With traditional games, inspirational stories of women, appreciation of local environment and art history Kalakshetra Foundation marked the 377 Birthday of Madras.

5.3 VISIT OF RESEARCH STUDENTS FROM CANADA

Ph.D. Student Ms. Marie-Josée Blanchard from The Centre for Interdisciplinary Studies in Society and Culture (CISSC) at Concordia University, Canada, visited Kalakshetra between 13-14 July2016to conduct field work on her research in the area of Rasa Theory. She spent two days observing classes, exploring the libraries and talking to the students and faculty members, as preliminary field work for her Ph.D. Thesis.

5.4 HERITAGE WALKS

The Kalakshetra Heritage Walks, introduced since April 2014, as guided walks for visitors available on a prior-booking basis, served to create awareness about Kalakshetra with the general public while also simultaneously generating revenue for Kalakshetra. The response to these walks has been very good and several foreigners visited Kalakshetra during the year.

5.5 COMMUNITY OUTREACH IN STATE-RUN SCHOOLS

As an essential part of its Outreach efforts, Kalakshetra works to make arts education accessible to children from economically backward sections of society with the aim of nurturing awareness, appreciation and sensitivity towards the arts. This was planned with the larger aim of empowering young people from less privileged backgrounds through arts and creating a channel for their inclusivity in the mainstream. Towards this, Kalakshetra works in tandem with an NGO called Aanmajothi, to deliver eight classes regularly every month to about 20 students each across six Corporation schools in Chennai.

Koormavatharam: This was a vintage dance drama choreographed by the Founder Smt. Rukmini Devi and lyrics was composed by Sri Papanasam Sivan. This was produced in 1974 and revived in Jan 2017.

32 VII. RESEARCH AND DOCUMENTATION

7.1 MUSEUM

 The inventory of Smt. Collection of 548 objects were completed.  Catalogued 41 phototgraphs that were handed over to Kalakshetra Museum by Smt. Sarada Hoffmann.  Organised photo exhibition at ISKCON, Banagalore during Annual Art Festival, Remembering Rukmini Devi Festival and Ramayana.

7.1 PUBLICATIONS

The Founder of Kalakshetra Foundation, Smt Rukmini Devi along withSri Sankara Menon, Secretary of the Foundation published Kalakshetra’s first quarterly journal in year 1977. The journal was a compilation of well-researched articles written on dance, music and art by various scholars. The last issue was published in 1985.

The journal was revived in the year 2014. Ms. Lakshmi Viswanathan, a well-known scholar and a dancer is the writer and editor for the journal from 2014 till date.

 The fifth issueof Kalakshetra Journal was published and released during the Kathakali Festival on 6 September 2016.  The sixth issue of Kalakshetra Journal was released on 28 February 2017 on the occasion of Rukmini Devi’s Birth Anniversary.

7.3. DIGITIZATION AND ARCHIVES

The documentation and archives department has kept up ongoing digitization and cataloguing work completing digitization of several hours of audio, video and several photos. The re-cataloguing of the books in the Research Library as per international standards is in progress. The database of books in R&D library from CDS ISIS is being transferred into Excel format.

8. PROMOTION OF TRADITIONAL CRAFTS THROUGH THE CRAFT EDUCATION AND RESEARCH CENTRE (CERC)

The Craft Education and Research Centre (CERC), has been a guardian to the traditions of handloom weaving, Kalamkari painting, usage of natural dyes and hand-block printing. Its emphasis is on preservation and revival of dying arts and lost traditions and the unit stands testimony to the Foundation’s holistic vision and commitment to the arts and crafts of India. As on date it has 14 looms. It is involved in production and sale of range of products including traditional designs of silk weaving from the Rukmini Devi Collection and cotton weaving from the Kalakshetra tradition. As on date it has employed 10 handloom weavers, two eminent artists in the field of Kalamkari painting and Block Printing.

34 8.1 NIRAM THIRAM: TEXTILE FESTIVAL

The annual textile festival, Niram Thiram, was held between 31 October 2016and 3 November 2016, at the Crafts Education and Research Centre premises and Rukmini Arangam. This year, the exploration of the overlaps spaces of performing Art and Craft was planned. The festival and the installation was inaugurated on 31 October 2016. Alongside this installation, following workshops were conducted: (i) Contemporary puppetry by Nori Art and Puppetry Centre, Hyderabad (ii) Traditional Rajasthan Puppetry by Mr.Vinod Bhat , New Delhi (iii) Performances by Keremane Shivananda Hedge, Artist,Sri Idagunji Mahaganapati YakshaganaMandali,Keremane, Karnataka and by Kalaimamani Sri.K.Dakshinamurthi, Therukoothu

The festival was a resounding success with workshops being attended to full capacity and a large footfall for the installations and viewings.

8.2. STAFF TRAINING AND EXPOSURE

The staff of the CERC exhibited their work at several events held throughout the year and participated in various workshops inlcuding: the Natural dye workshop and training with National Institute of Rural Development & Panchayat Raj at Hyderabad between 1st December and 17th December 2016

One of the primary projects undertaken by Craft Education and Research Centre with the financial aid of M/s Upasana Engineering Ltd., Chennai was for the skill development of artisans in the designs and technique of weaving of the Kalakshetra Korvai sari and dyeing skill training workshops.

(i) Silk yarn dyeing workshop was conducted on 22 and 23 August 2016 for the Kalakshetra weavers and Mahadevpur, Telengana weavers (ii) Natural dyeing workshop was conducted between 17th Feb and 22nd Feb 2017 for the Kalakshetra weavers. (iii) Weaving Skill training workshop was conducted to the Kalakshetra Weavers between 27 Feb and 25 March 2017 (iv) Natural dyeing workshop on cotton handspun yarn was conducted between 6th March and 10 March 2017 to the Bhavani Chethna Sangham, Timbaktu, Anathapur.

Kalakshetra was invited the Prakriti Foundation to curate an exhibition of newly revived Smt.Rukmini Devi saris woven in the Weaving Centre. This exhibition was installed for a period of 10 days from 15th March to 25th March 2017.

Annual Report 2016 -17 35 IX. SCHOOLS MANAGED BY KALAKSHETRA

Kalakshetra is charged with the running of schools, the Besant Arundale Senior Secondary School and the Besant Theosophical Higher Secondary School. Set in calm sylvan surroundings with spacious cottages for classrooms, the schools provide an ambience for holistic learning and environmental awareness as the rest of the institution. Well-equipped infrastructural facilities and audio visual learning aids deliver academic concepts in an interesting and practical manner. Apart from consistent excellence in academics, the schools invest committed time in extra and co-curricular activities guided by a sense of social responsibility.

9.1.1. BESANT ARUNDALE SENIOR SECONDARY SCHOOL

Besant Arundale Senior Secondary School was started as an adjunct to Kalakshetra Foundation in the year June 1973and is affiliated to CBSE.It is doing its best to impart education which is truly Indian in character, to impart education through love and happiness without fear casting its shadow during the process and to impart education to render service, to promote culture, beauty and goodness in all living things. The mission of the School is to teach in an environment of pleasurable learning, to be sensitive to environment, striving to make the school campus an entirely plastic free zone and learn socially useful and productive skills to enhance quality of individual and social life.

The school is unique as it offers Dance (Bharatanatyam), Music (Carnatic) & Painting as electives in the Senior Secondary level as Fine Arts Stream. During these 44 years of existence of the school, thousands of students have been greatly benefited from the cultural exposure to the finest traditions of Indian Fine Arts, side by side with good academic training.

The first Montessori school in India was started when Dr. George Sydney Arundale invited Dr. Maria Montessori to start a course in the Besant Arundale Senior Secondary School in 1939. It is open to children of 2 ½ to 5 ½ years of age.

In the Board Examination held in March 2017, Class XII students performed well. The school topper scored 466/500 which is 93%. In class X one student scored CGPA of 10 points and 18 students out of 43 have scored A grade with 10 points in individual subjects.

9.1.5. TEACHER TRAINING PROGRAMMES aeachers were deputed to several training programmes conducted throughout the year. In addition to class room studies, various workshops, experts were invited to School to give lectures on various topics in the field of Art and Education. Children were taken to field trips.

Annual Report 2016 -17 37 9.2. BESANT THEOSOPHICAL HIGHER SECONDARY SCHOOL

The Besant Theosophical High School was started by Shri George Sydney Arundale on 27 June 1934. The School was founded at the express wish of Dr. Annie Besant at the time of her death in 1933; a School where education without fear would be imparted to children. The School stands as a memorial to Dr. Annie Besant. The Founder of Kalakshetra – Smt. Rukmini Devi Arundale took immense interest in the development of the School. In June 2006, the School was upgraded as a Higher Secondary School. The School is affiliated to Tamil Nadu Board and it is functioning as a Tamil Nadu Government aided School upto 10th Standard.

The Higher Secondary Sections i.e. 11th and 12th Standards are run on self-financing basis. During the academic year 2016-17, the number of students in the School is as under: Upto 10th Standard Higher Secondary Section 610 134

In the Higher Secondary examination held in March 2016, a pass percentage of 92% was achieved, out of 64 students 59 students emerged successfully. In the SSLC Public Examination held in April 2016 a pass percentage of 96% was achieved, out of 68 students 65 students emerged successfully. The School celebrated International Yoga Day on 21.6.2016.
