THE MISSAL OF THE ROMAN RITE

It is difficult to trace exact origins of the first missal. The first book bearing the name Missale Romanum appeared in 1474, but it was not until after the Council of Trent that an edition of the Missale Romanum appeared that was to 9am MONDAY be in obligatory use for the Church throughout the world. †Rosa Leon-Guerrero Gladys Leon-Guerrero This marked the first official attempt at uniformity in the celebration of the Mass in the history of the church. 9am MASS TUESDAY Lorna Walton M/M Conrad Reich Since that time, to accommodate the ongoing evolution 5:30pm MASS WEDNESDAY and development of the liturgy, new editions of the Roman †Fr. After issuing the revised missal published by the authority 11:45am MASS SUNDAY of the Second Vatican Council, Pope Paul VI gave Our Parish Family Fr. Jack permission to older priests to continue using the former missal if they were unable to break their attachment to it. In the 1980’s, Pope John Paul II, In an effort to lay the groundwork to resolve the schism occasioned by a French Archbishop (LeFebvre) who regarded the new missal as invalid. His religious order—The Society of St. Pius X— also assailed a number of teachings from Vatican II, especially those modifying the way in which the dealt with the Jews and Protestant Christians. In 2007, Pope Benedict XVI issued a decree on his own authority (moto proprio) giving priests the right to use the old Missal for private Masses and for “stable groups” of the faithful who felt strongly attached to the Traditional Latin Mass. His goal was to promote unity in the Roman Rite while allowing under certain restrictions the use of the old Rite alongside the one that has been used in parishes throughout the world for the last 50 years.

A week ago Friday, after returning to the Vatican after his hospitalization, determined that for the sake of unity in the church he was further restricting the use of the Latin Mass. Henceforward, any priest wishing to use the old Missal must get permission of his bishop. He did this only after consultation with the world’s bishops which was conducted about a year ago. He found in their counsel evidence that the use of two missals was causing division rather than unity. Specifically, he found that many—not all—devotees of the Old Missal not only disparaged the New Missal but were also talking down many of the teachings of Vatican II. Francis has been insistent that there can be “no going back”, that the teachings of the Council must be studied and followed. This decree will not affect the parishioners of St. Damian’s in OKC who are permitted to continue using the TLM. 17th Sunday in Ordinary Time WWW.STANDREWMOORE.COM July 25, 2021

DISCIPLESHIP FORMATION CLASSES

Discipleship Formation sessions for grades K-12 will begin on September 12th . We are starting after Labor Day this year in order to give everyone the needed time to get back on track following the worst of the pandemic. Since we have a very high percentage of parishioners already vaccinated, we will start in person and without requiring the wearing of masks.

We sent out a brief survey to all parents of school aged children on Friday. Your prompt responses will be of great help to us as we order materials and obtain commitments from catechists and helpers.

CLASS TIMES WILL BE ON SUNDAYS BETWEEN THE 9AM AND 11:45 MASSES

10:15 TO 11:20

Please contact Tommie Tran if you have any questions at [email protected] or 405-754-5309

BECOMING A FAITHFUL CATHOLIC OF JESUS (Even if You Already Happen to be Catholic) QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

I have never been baptized, what steps do I take to become Catholic? The first step is to begin attending Mass regularly if you have not already done so. In Catholic worship the prayers and actions reflect our core beliefs. The next step is to sign up for our Journey of Faith program which begins on Wednesday, Sept. 8th, at 6:30pm in the Joyce Center.

I was baptized in a different Christian church but I feel called to become Catholic, what do I do? The response is the same as the one above.

I was baptized a Catholic but was never really raised as one. I’d like to become a faithful member of the church. What do I do? The response is the same as the one above.

I’ve been Catholic most of my life but never was Confirmed. How do I proceed? See you on September 8th if not sooner at Sunday Mass.

Is Journey of Faith the same as the RCIA I have seen on other parish websites? Those letters refer to the Rites by which Adults are Initiated as Christians. Those Rites include , Confirmation, and Eucharist which are called the Sacraments of Initiation. Journey of Faith leads participants to those Sacramental Rites.

I understand that Journey of Faith begins with something called ALPHA. How does that work? Alpha is a Greek word which means Beginning. Jesus said that he is the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. It is very fitting that the Journey to becoming disciples begins with a focus on the identity, the mighty deeds, and the person of Jesus. In Alpha each and all participants are provided with the opportunity to pursue, find, and cherish a personal relationship with The Lord that results in a faith that can move mountains.

Where do these participants come from? Who invites them? Some people will attend because they read about it online or in our parish bulletin. But most people will come because they were encouraged by members of our parish family whose lives have been so changed through the Grace of God that they just can’t keep it to themselves. They speak with neighbors, co-workers, and friends (even family members) who are not presently involved in any church or religious group
