The course boasts two very distinct nines, designed by course architect, Terry Doss. The front nine, better known as "The Links", is a challenging course with several different hole designs tucked tightly between majestic oaks. With water coming into play on three of the holes on the front nine, you will be challenged. The back nine, better known as "The Spruce", is a much more open design which replicates the signature of original golf course design with gently rolling fairways and large, fast and undulating greens. But don't think you'll come off hole #18 without a challenge on the back nine! Two very difficult, long Par 4's will test your skills, with again, water coming into play on three holes. At the LPGA Qualifying School in December, she kept her confidence after shooting an opening 76 and followed that by firing rounds of 70, 69, 68, and 71 (354). Congratulations, Jenny, and we’ll look forward to rooting for you and watching your progress on TV this year. We are proud that our past President, Diane Herndon, has been elected as the first woman to serve on the MSGA Executive Committee. She will eventually be the first person to be President of both the MSGA-WD and the MSGA. Can you believe it is already 2014? That means that the MSGA-WD will be 20 years young next year! I think we have a varied tournament schedule for this 19th year, beginning with the ever-popular team matches in May and ending with the Open at Congressional on October 21 and 22. Read further in the Newsletter for some important information regarding this tournament. I would like to thank Shirley Kushner for her years of dedication to our Executive MSGA-WD President, Melly Tucker Committee. Her expertise will be missed, but we have chosen two new members to fill her slot Argyle Country Club as well as filling a vacancy. Hae Han (Montgomery C.C.) will be the Officer-in-Charge (OIC) of the Mid Amateur at Montgomery on June 5th and 6th.

I heard about this book in an interview with Rafferty on The Gist podcast, and I was skeptical. After all, 1939 is traditionally accepted as the best movie year in history. Gone With the Wind, The Wizard of Oz, Stagecoach, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington. But when he started to name the movies of 1999, I couldn’t believe the list.

Barnett Hollywood Deals: Soft Contracts for Hard Markets Jonathan M. Barnett* Hollywood film studios, talent and other deal participants regularly commit to, and undertake production of, high-stakes film projects on the basis of unsigned “deal memos” or draft agreements whose legal enforceability is uncertain. These “soft contracts” constitute a hybrid instrument that addresses a challenging transactional environment where neither formal contract nor reputation effects adequately protect parties against the holdup risk and project risk inherent to a film project. Parties negotiate the degree of contractual formality, which correlates with legal enforceability, as a proxy for allocating these risks at a transaction-cost savings relative to a fully formalized and specified instrument. Uncertainly enforceable contracts embed an implicit termination option that provides some protection against project risk while maintaining a threat of legal liability that provides some protection against holdup risk.
