,, This year's varsity volleyball team was young and inexperienced, but Julia Massey led her team to an overall season record of 21 wins and 8 losses, in spite of their lack of experience. The team had a district record of 12 wins and 4 losses and came in second place in district. Our girls also took second at the Clear Creek and YMBL Tournaments. The Junior Varsity team, also a young team, won consolation in our NHS Tournament. Sue Barker coached the J.V. team. This is her second year at NHS.

136 137 N.H.S. Round ballers The season record for the 1979-1980 Bulldogs Varsity Basketball team was 11 wins-19 losses; the district record was 3 wins-13 losses. The Bulldogs played the year with very little experience sometimes starting as many as five juniors. The Varsity was made up of Seniors: Stuart Kieschnick, Jeff Merchant, Kevin Rosetta, Johnny Spell, and Jeff Wilkinson; Juniors: Kevin Austin, Mitch Macon, Mike McMahon, Caetano Sequeira, and Brad Watson. Two of these five juniors earned recognition for the outstanding jobs they did this year. Kevin Austin was named first team all district and was 22-AAAA's leading scorer with a 19.9 average. Brad Watson was named second team all district with a 12.6 average. The Bulldogs do have some fine ball players returning for the 1980-1981 season with the valuable experience gained this year should be outstanding.

J.V. ROUND BALLERS Success cannot always be measured only in terms of victories and defeats. Intangible qualities such as honesty, pride, loyalty and character are also a measure of a man's worth. Although this team did not win as many games as we would have liked this year, I was privileged to watch this junior varsity basketball team mature from a group of individuals into a closely knit team. Through periods of disappointment and frustration, this team never complained or made excuses. I enjoyed my association with these young men and would truly have to term their season a success.

SOPHOMORE BASKETBALLERS The sophomore basketball team improved steadily through the season even though we ended the season with a 4-15 record. An exam ple is Nederland sophomore versus BC-P. At BC-P we were beaten 83-34. A few weeks later in a rematch they again won, but by a slim mar gin of 73-65. The highlight of the season was winning third place in the Sabine Pass Varsity Tournament.

144 v. BASKETBALLERS The girls' varsity basketball team had a good sea son with a 17-10 win-loss record. The varsity team was made up of the following girls: Shari Gray, Karen Walker, Susan Borel, Cindi Neall, Suzanne Wassermann, Pam Shockey, Karen Zeek, Thalia La Bure, Kelly Wimberly, and Kerrie Wallace. The Var sity will lose 4 seniors this year but will have 6 returning lettermen next year.

JV BASKETBALLERS The girls' junior varsity turned from inex perienced individuals into a real team mid way into their season. Although their win less record is not an impressive one, they managed to narrow the gap in scoring dur ing the second half of district play, providing some real competition for their opponents. They also brought home the consolation trophy from Vidor and promoted two play ers, Karen Zeek and Cindi Neal , to the var sity. Many of them will go to varsity next year. The players were Lori Fuller, Cindy Chatagnier, Paula Campbell, Carrie Frank lin, Cathy Jones, Laura Busby, Cindi Arnold, Norma Thibideaux , Lori Myers, Doris , Erchelburger, Paula Armand.

151 NEDERLAND GIRLS TRACK TEAM Dedicated, determined, hard working ... These are overworked but accurate phrases that describe Nederland's 1980 girls track team. Young and inexperienced, this small group of girls carried on the true idea of sports. Rarely given a chance to win , these girls worked hard, improving their times and distances each week, continually striving to attain personal goals each had set for herself.

158 Bulldog Baseball Coaches Have Fantastic Second Year

Head Coach Larry Hennig Coach Gary Long For two young men at NHS 1980 was an espe cially good year. Coaches Larry Hennig and Gary Long in their second year of coaching at Nederland led the Bulldog baseball team all the way to the regionals in state competition. According to them all the credit goes to talented group of athletes that it was their pleasure to coach.

159 160 PLAY BALL

Our 1980 baseball season started with many question marks. Perhaps the biggest question was could the 1980 bunch replace 8 starters from a 22- 10 1979 season. There was little doubt from the beginning as during the first week of play the Bull dogs went 4-1 . The Bulldogs won the Huntsville tournament bringing home a championship trophy, the first in many years for Nederland. The second week found cold weather and tough opponents facing the Bulldogs. After a split of a header with tough Lufkin, Nederland placed third in the John Gerta Memorial Tournament. Victo ries in the tournament over state power Stratford, Nacogdoches, and Vidor began to draw attention to the Bulldogs. The third week marked the opening of district. Local press and opposing coaches predicted Thomas Jefferson, Forest Park and Vidor to finish ahead of the Bulldogs. It appeared to be an uphill battle, but a successful non-district campaign had proven us to be a contender. The first round of district found the Bulldogs win ning 6 in a row and setting all kinds of offensive records. But a fatal final week found us in second place with one-run losses to French and Forest Park. Mixed emotions filled our minds, but our oppo nents had not seen the Bulldogs at their best. The second round ended in a three-way tie with Forest Park, French, and Nederland. To get in the tie, we avenged losses to French and Forest Park. But more than gain revenge, we had discovered how to win the big one, something we had not done earlier. This momentum we had obtained carried us with two victories over Forest Park and the district cham pionship. This was the first district championship in baseball for Nederland in 20 years, but the Bulldogs were not finished. Playoffs loomed ahead.

163 Upon Winning District Crown Bulldogs Advance to the Playoffs " The first playoff game was against Aldine for bi-district. We responded with 12-3 and 6-1 wins. Regional play proved to be tougher against a veteran Pearland team. Nederland dropped the opener but bounced back with a 4-2 second game win. In the final game, Pear land won 11-8 but not before the Bulldogs had battled them every inning of the game. That last game marked the end of the season, but we found ourselves only 3 games from the most prestigious tournament in high school baseball. The most remarkable thing about this group is that we overcame all the odds against us. Our 29-10 record, the most wins ever for a Nederland team, is something that I will never forget. I will always hold every player with the fondest of all memories. To these guys I owe Dale Fisher scores one against Aldine in the second game of the everything." series at Lamar University field . 165 Junior Varsity Baseball Team Gives Their All The 1980 junior varsity baseball team had a very productive season. Not measured by wins or losses, the team had a good season, but in the amount of progress each individual player achieved. The team put forth hard work and a great effort to result in a fine season.

251 BULLDOG BEAT

Many lasting friendships are made during the year on paper staff. Here Harry and Richard are working to paste up a page for the newspaper. All students in the class take a page and work together on laying out the articles and pictures to make the paper look great.

The journalism class at Nederland High School consists of students who wish to have a background on journalism and mass communication. The students are put in charge of writing articles, putting the paper together, getting pictures, and sending the paper to the printer and then selling them. The paper is put out approximately every 6 weeks during the school year. The staff members on the "Bulldog Beat" have to meet deadlines and are put in pressure situ ations all year long to give them the feel of working on a real life newspaper.
