The national authorities are invited to report on Section I, while Section II shall be prepared for each property inscribed on the World Heritage list by the person(s) directly in charge of the property’s management. The periodic reports prepared by the States Parties will serve a three-fold purpose: to assess the current state of all World Heritage related issues in a State Party, to help focus the Committee’s as well as the State Party’s future activities and funds, to strengthen sub-regional and regional co-operation between States Parties. The Periodic Reporting Questionnaire In 1998, at its twenty-second session, the World Heritage Committee approved Explanatory Notes, designed to be read in conjunction with the Periodic Reporting Format, in order to outline the information expected to flow from the periodic reporting exercise. • The Axiological Relevance of the Tumba-Tumba Festival in Paoay, Ilocos Norte, Philippines
119 International Forum Vol. 21, No. 1 June 2018 pp. 119-133 FEATURE The Axiological Relevance of the Tumba-tumba Festival in Paoay, Ilocos Norte, Philippines Caesar Ziggy Q. Perlas Abstract. This study explored the Tumba-tumba festival celebration of Paoay, Ilocos Norte in the Philippines. During the celebration, different huts are put up with altars inside them that have a lot of food offerings. The study explored the value and meaning of the folk practices. The studied used the ethnographic observation, documentation, and interviews of the participants of the 10 districts during the celebration. The tradition was the blended values of Ilocano and religious faith. The participants were devoted in the preservation of the culture but few knew the meaning of the food offerings. In the practice of the tradition, the participants were not aware that they were performing different fields of the arts. The local government organizes other activities to promote the festival but these usually result in divided interests of visitors towards the real value of the tradition. The local government therefore, as the key factor in the preservation of the cultural values of the tradition, is recommended to develop and increase the awareness of the program during the festival to promote its real meaning for the younger generation to emulate. Keywords: Tumba-tumba, Festival, Paoay, Culture, Tradition, Ilocos Region, Philippines Introduction Salanga (1984) stated that before the arrival of the Spanish rule in the Ilocos Region, the land was originally inhabited by Negritos, then the Malays that settled in the mountains and was later divided into three different groups as the Isneg, Tinguian, and the Ilocano.

  • A Certain Tendency Europeanization As a Response to Americanization in the Philippines’ “Golden-Age” Studio System
A Certain Tendency Europeanization as a Response to Americanization in the Philippines’ “Golden-Age” Studio System Joel David Inha University Abstract Malvarosa (Gregorio Fernandez, 1958) possesses a curious reputation in relation to other prestige productions of the so-called first “Golden Age of Philippine Cinema” (roughly the 1950s). Although sharing certain neorealist properties with the other serious outputs of LVN, its production company, it also partakes of the overreliance on coincidence and the mercurial performa- tive style that characterize the then less-reputable undertakings of Philippine cinema. This article attempts a reconsideration of the significance of film texts sourced from Philippine graphic novels (known as komiks) as more properly belonging to the period succeeding the Golden Age, when innovations that would eventually provide the foundation for more accomplished film activity during the martial-law period were first introduced. Keywords Malvarosa, multicharacter narrative, neorealism, Philippine architecture, Philippine cinema, retablo JOEL DAVID: A CERTAIN TENDENCY UNITAS 24 Introduction One recurring lamentation in standard discourses on Philippine architecture is that, despite the obvious and pervasive colonial influences, few structures aspire to breathtaking heights, much less attain them. Such anxieties might be prone to exacerbation now that the once-tallest building in the world has collapsed from a terrorist attack attributed to Islamic militants, and the tallest building (at least from 1998 to 2004 and still the tallest twin-building structure) is a few hours away from Manila by plane in the Islamic state of Malaysia. Other projects intended to challenge the current record holder, Dubai’s Burj Khalifa, continue to be announced and undertaken, mostly outside the Euro-American sphere.

  • PHILIPPINE HISTORY Be Proud of Being a Filipino! SY2: 2008- 2009
PHILIPPINE HISTORY Be proud of being a Filipino! SY2: 2008- 2009 PHILIPPINE GEOGRAPHY A. Origin of the Philippines 1. Legends • The story of the bird, the sky, and the sea 2. Theories i. Part of a lost continent • It was believed that the Philippines was a remnant of a vast continent in the pacific which had sunk during pre- historic times like the fabled Atlantis lost somewhere in the Atlantic Ocean. • This lost pacific continent was called “Lemuria” or “Mu”. • Its remnants aside from Philippines were Borneo, Celebes, Java, Sumatra, and other islands of the pacific. ii. Volcanic Origin • It was proposed by Dr. Bailey Willis. • According to this theory, Philippines was born due to the eruptions of sea volcanoes in remote epochs. iii. Land Bridge Theory • This theory suggests that Philippines was once a landmass bridging China and the Asian Mainland, to Borneo, Indonesia, New Guinea, and even Australia. The present China Sea was an exposed dry land known as the Sunda Shelf which covered an area of 1, 800, 000 square kilometers. During the post glacial age, about 250, 000 years ago, the world’s ice melted, causing the sea level to rise. Consequently, the lower land regions including the land bridges linking Asia and the Philippines were submerged, thus, Philippines archipelago was formed. • This theory is supplied by the following plausible reasons; a. Similarity of fauna and flora in Asia and the Philippines b. Similarity of rock structure c. Existence of the shallow China Sea between the Asia Mainland and the Philippines d. The presence of a fore deep at the eastern margin of the Philippines indicating the archipelago was once the edge of the Asia continental Platform B.
