PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE

September 2016 – present University of Houston, Victoria Victoria, TX s Faculty in the Communication Design Department. I teach a range of both studio and academic classes at the undergraduate level. The studio classes include letterpress, other print processes, and structures. The academic classes range from typography and other design studio classes to design history and a theory and methods class.

January 2016 – present University of Texas Austin, TX s Adjunct Faculty in the Design Division. I teach letterpress, papermaking, and book structure classes at the undergraduate level. I additionally teach a letterpress for writers class through the Michener Writing Center.

January 2019 – June 2019 Southwest School of Art San Antonio, TX s Interim Director of the Book and Paper Program. Taught undergraduate classes in letterpress, , and papermaking. Oversaw the day-to-day maintenance of the facilities. Ran the community class program.

May 2013 – January 2019 University of Texas Austin, TX s Shop Manager of the Design Division’s Publication Studio. My primary responsibility is to work with students on their projects. I additionally maintain the equipment, order supplies, manage graduate interns, engage in public outreach and print all the job and publication work for the shop. I also manage the Rob Roy Kelly Wood Type .

May 2012 – April 2013 Harry Ransom Center Austin, TX s Book Conservator. Developed a condition survey for the Pforzheimer Collection of early modern English literature. Performed the survey and then treated items in the collection. Treatments ranged from fabricating drop-spine boxes to performing minor mends, re-sewing and re-binding collection material. This was a grant funded position.

September 2010 – May 2012 Harry Ransom Center Austin, TX s Public Services Graduate Intern. This was a two-year position with time split between the Room and the Conservation Department. While in the Conservation Department I worked primarily on pigment consolidation of illuminated manuscripts from the Center’s medieval manuscript collection. My primary function in the Reading Room was to engage in public outreach.

August 2009 – August 2010 Blanton Museum of Art Austin, TX s Curatorial Intern in the American and Contemporary Art Department. As a research intern I worked primarily producing didactics about items in the collection for exhibitions and lectures. I also worked with visiting artists on installing temporary exhibitions.

May 2006 – January 2008 Walters Museum of Art Baltimore, MD s Assistant Conservator in the Book & Paper Conservation Lab. Performed complex treatments on items in the museum’s medieval manuscripts collection. I also set budgets for monthly gallery rotations of collection material, oversaw lab technicians and contractors, installed shows, and monitored and maintained environmental conditions.

Jan 2007 – Jan 2008 Maryland Institute College of Art Baltimore, MD s Adjunct Faculty in the Print Department. Taught letterpress at the undergraduate level and applied graphic design at the graduate level. I also managed the production of a limited artist book for Dolphin Press. May 2005 – August 2005 Walters Museum of Art Baltimore, MD s Intern in the Book & Paper Conservation Lab. Worked closely with the curator to determine what treatments to perform on manuscripts slated for exhibition. Performed complex treatments on collection material and managed the installation of manuscripts in the gallery spaces.

August 2004 – May 2005 Benson Latin American Austin, TX s Conservator for the Special Collection. Treated and manuscripts from the library’s special collections. Worked with the archivist to address housing needs of collection material and monitored environmental conditions.

2000 – 2003 Cornell University Ithaca, NY s Conservation Technician in the Department of Preservation. Worked on special collections material. Performed complex treatments ranging from paper repair to rebinding and the construction of clamshell boxes.

1998 – 2000 Kevin Auer Bookbinder & Printer Portland, ME s Proprietor. Specialized in the restoration of bound books. Also engaged in a range of letterpress from jobbing work to book production. Additionally worked producing limited edition fine art prints.

1995 – 1997 Wolfe Editions Portland, ME s Co-owner of Print Shop. Performed all aspects of letterpress bookwork and fine art editioning. I additionally worked directly with clients, ordered supplies, maintained equipment and trained interns and volunteers.

EDUCATION

2009 – 2013 University of Texas Austin, TX s Ph.D. candidate in the History Department. Completed all degree requirements with the exception of my dissertation. My dissertation topic is on the League of New Hampshire Craftsmen, the first state-funded craft program in the United States. More broadly I explored the development of craft in America in the 20th century prior to the studio craft movement of the late 1940s and 1950s.

2003 – 2009 University of Texas Austin, TX s Graduate student in the History Department. Obtained Master’s degree in History. Wrote my master’s report on the horticultural writings of the 17th century virtuoso John Evelyn.

2003 – 2009 University of Texas Austin, TX s Graduate student in the Book & Paper Conservation Program. Obtained Certificate in Conservation with a focus on book conservation.

2000 – 2003 Cornell University Ithaca, NY s Undergraduate student. Concluded coursework for my Bachelor’s degree with classes in the History and Chemistry Departments.

1997 – 1998 Zygot Bookworks Portland, ME s Bookbinding apprentice. Learned basic book structures as well as book restoration from master binder Scott Mullenburg.

1993 – 1995 Maine College of Art Portland, ME s Undergraduate student. Completed the two-year foundation program. I additionally took advanced coursework in lithographic and intaglio printing techniques.

1988 – 1991 Connecticut College New London, CT s Undergraduate student. Completed coursework in Asian Studies Department, with emphasis on Asian art and literature. PROFESSIONAL ACTIVITIES

May 2016-present Austin Book Arts Center Austin, TX s Teacher at the Austin Book Arts. I teach introductory bookbinding, photo album structures and a range of letterpress classes. I additionally run the printer training program.

2004 – 2013 Harry Ransom Center Austin, TX s Volunteer in the Book Conservation Department. Performed a range of activities in the lab from developing and implementing condition surveys to the treatment and housing of collection material to pigment consolidation on the medieval manuscripts.

1998 – 2004 Dale Guild Type Foundry Howell, NJ sSeasonal Volunteer. Cast type for printing and foil stamping at the last foundry in the United States that produced foundry type.

1997 – 2001 Dartmouth College Hanover, NH s Teacher at The Dartmouth College Summer Graphic Arts Workshop. Taught letterpress printing and design.

AWARDS

2003 University of Texas Austin, TX s Recipient of a University of Texas competitive academic scholarship for the Conservation program.

2003 Cornell University Ithaca, NY s Recipient of a grant from The Cornell Council for the Arts to produce a limited edition letterpress book.

2002 University of Virginia Charlottesville, VA s Recipient of the Jim Davies Scholarship for Rare Book School to attend Nicholas Pickwoad’s class on European Bookbinding from 1500 – 1800.
