The Birth of Sandman Christoph Ammann Doug Bloom∗ Jonathan M. Cohen John Courte Lucio Flores Sho Hasegawa Nikos Kalaitzidis Terrance Tornberg Laurence Treweek Bob Winter Chris Yang Sony Pictures Imageworks 1 Introduction The Birth of Sandman sequence in Spider-Man 3 involved creating a human-sized character who emerges from a pile of sand in full view under a well-lit environment. The scale of the shot ranges from macro close up views of single sand grains to distant views of the entire sand pile as Sandman emerges. The sequence begins with a fully CG 2,672-frame shot that slowly revolves around sand- man as he forms. The Imageworks Sand FX team had an enormous challenge of transferring character animation into a physically plau- sible animation of hundreds of millions of sand grains forming into a human form. To accomplish this task, we built a variety of simulation engines and Figure 2: Sandman's hand collapses. We used everything from a Houdini DOPs simulation of sand grains settling for the extreme close-ups, to a surface-based 1b). During this erosion process, we simulated collision with solid relaxation algorithm derived from [Onoue and Nishita 2003], to a parts of Sandman's body. This heightfield-based system was highly grain-grain simulator similar to [Bell et al. 2005]. Our rendering efficient, able to process the entire 2,672-frame shot in under 30 system was based on RenderMan and included a continuous level- minutes.

  • Meet the Men Giving up on Women They Don’T Want Girlfriends, They Don’T Want Children — They Don’T Even Want to Have Sex
U.K. – November 15, 2015 Meet the men giving up on women They don’t want girlfriends, they don’t want children — they don’t even want to have sex. The secretive MGTOW movement is a fast-growing online community of disillusioned males. But are they misogynists or misunderstood? MARTIN DAUBNEY tracks some of them down Part I David Sherratt, 18, is a chemistry student at Cardiff University. He has never had a girlfriend and isn’t planning on finding one. Not now. Not ever. “Hook-up sex is too risky for words,” he says. “Girls can wake up the next day and claim you raped them. I’m genuinely too scared to go near a woman — just in case. At university, I’m made to feel like a rapist all the time… I’ve never had a relationship and I don’t think that’s going to happen anytime soon. It’s just too dangerous.” Neither does he see the point of marriage, since half of them end in divorce. “Marriage is like playing Russian roulette with three bullets in the cylinder” he says firmly. “I’ve never been interested in having kids since I learnt about the lack of fathers’ rights. The whole system is stacked against men. Our generation has been screwed over by feminism. People might say it’s sad, but I’m checking out.” It would be all too easy to scoff at David’s comments and dismiss him as just another angry teenager. But an increasingly militant anti-lad culture in our universities, complete with sexual-consent classes, is causing young men such as David great concern.

  • The Metafiction of Neil Gaiman's the Sandman
UNIVERSITY OF AMSTERDAM FACULTY OF HUMANITIES Master Thesis: The Metafiction of Neil Gaiman’s The Sandman Author: Ivana Babić Submission date: June 30, 2016 Discipline of study: MA English Literature and Culture Supervisor: Dr. Joyce Goggin Statement of Originality This document is written by Ivana Babić who declares to take full responsibility for the contents of this document. ‘I declare that the text and the work presented in this document is original and that no sources, other than those mentioned in the text and its references, have been used in creating it.’ The Faculty of the Humanities is responsible solely for the supervision of completion of the work, not for the contents. 1 Contents Abstract 3 Introduction 4 Chapter One: The Socio-Historical Context 12 Chapter Two: The Myth 18 Chapter Three: The Archetypes 44 Conclusion 54 Bibliography 55 2 Abstract This thesis’ main focus is the fantastic narrative of The Sandman, a comic book series which explores the storytelling as such. As will be shown further on, in the introduction, fantasy is a frequent genre in comics and it is what enables a multiplicity of themes and forms to enter the medium. The conception that stories, which are shaped by the human experience, in turn shape us and tell us something new about ourselves, lies at the heart of The Sandman. Gaiman uses this idea to formulate the principles of the modern world within the comics. Furthermore, this thesis will try and see how the techniques used by Gaiman relate to the comics legacy. Over a course of time comics has developed a self-reflexive approach to storytelling through intertextuality, specifically parody, which has foregrounded the metafictional aspect of their narratives.
