An Interview with Sergio Martino: an American in Rome
1 An interview with Sergio Martino: An American in Rome Giulio Olesen, Bournemouth University Introduction Sergio Martino (born Rome, 1938) is a film director known for his contribution to 1970s and 1980s Italian filone cinema. His first success came with the giallo Lo strano vizio della Signora Wardh (Next!) (1971), from which he moved to spaghetti westerns (Mannaja [A Man Called Blade], 1977), gialli (I corpi presentano tracce di violenza carnale [Torso], 1973), poliziotteschi (Milano trema: la polizia vuole giustizia [The Violent Professionals], 1973), horror movies (La montagna del dio cannibale [The Mountain of the Cannibal God], 1978; L’isola degli uomini pesce [Island of Mutations], 1979), science fiction movies (2019, dopo la caduta di New York [2019, After the Fall of New York], 1983) and comedies (Giovannona Coscialunga disonorata con onore [Giovannona Long-Thigh], 1973). His works witness the hybridization of international and local cinematic genres as a pivotal characteristic of Italian filone cinema. This face-to-face interview took place in Rome on 26 October 2015 in the venues premises of Martino’s production company, Dania Film, and addresses his horror and giallo productions. Much scholarship analyses filone cinema under the lens of cult or transnational cinema studies. In this respect, the interview aims at collecting Martino’s considerations regarding the actual state of debate on Italian filone cinema. Nevertheless, e Emphasis is put on a different approach towards this kind of cinema; an approach that aims at analysing filone cinema for its capacity to represent contemporaneous issues and concerns. Accordingly, introducing Martino’s relationship with Hollywood, the interview focuses on the way in which his horror movies managed to intercept register fears and neuroses of Italian society. -

The Broken Ideals of Love and Family in Film Noir
1 Murder, Mugs, Molls, Marriage: The Broken Ideals of Love and Family in Film Noir Noir is a conversation rather than a single genre or style, though it does have a history, a complex of overlapping styles and typical plots, and more central directors and films. It is also a conversation about its more common philosophies, socio-economic and sexual concerns, and more expansively its social imaginaries. MacIntyre's three rival versions suggest the different ways noir can be studied. Tradition's approach explains better the failure of the other two, as will as their more limited successes. Something like the Thomist understanding of people pursuing perceived (but faulty) goods better explains the neo- Marxist (or other power/conflict) model and the self-construction model. Each is dependent upon the materials of an earlier tradition to advance its claims/interpretations. To Teach Low English Proficient Students
Connecting Dots: Using Some of the 20th Century’s Most Significant “Whodunits” to Teach Low English Proficient Students Mario Marlon J. Ibao Fonville Middle School Here’s a brief mental exercise for the armchair detective: Connect all nine dots above using four unbroken lines. Do not lift your pen to start another line. Need clues? Try these: “Think outside the box (no intended reference to a fast food commercial),” and “the northwest is where an arrow starts to hit the mark.” Got it? If you did, you certainly have what it takes to be a detective, and if you enjoyed solving this puzzle, you probably will enjoy reading and teaching detective stories. If you are an ESL or Language Arts teacher who loves reading detective stories and is thinking of using detective stories to challenge students to go beyond the obvious, then this curriculum unit is written specifically for you. INTRODUCTION I teach at Fonville Middle School, a typical middle school in the highly urban Houston Independent School District. There are great needs here. In 2001-2002, 96% of the students were receiving a free or reduced-cost lunch. 52% were judged to be at risk of dropping out. 86% of the 1,100 students were Hispanic, 8% African-American, and 6% white. In 1998-99, only 20% of sixth graders met minimum expectations in reading, according to TAAS tests, and only 42% met minimum expectations in math. I teach Language Arts to Low English Proficient (LEP) students in this school. The needs here are even greater. About 25% of the 70 sixth and seventh grade students I teach everyday are new to the country, and this means they do not understand or speak a word of English beyond the usual “hello,” “thank you,” and “goodbye.” A significant number of this group has literacy problems in Spanish, their first language, and English, their target language.
