Young Americans to Emotional Rescue: Selected Meetings
YOUNG AMERICANS TO EMOTIONAL RESCUE: SELECTING MEETINGS BETWEEN DISCO AND ROCK, 1975-1980 Daniel Kavka A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF MUSIC August 2010 Committee: Jeremy Wallach, Advisor Katherine Meizel © 2010 Daniel Kavka All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Jeremy Wallach, Advisor Disco-rock, composed of disco-influenced recordings by rock artists, was a sub-genre of both disco and rock in the 1970s. Seminal recordings included: David Bowie’s Young Americans; The Rolling Stones’ “Hot Stuff,” “Miss You,” “Dance Pt.1,” and “Emotional Rescue”; KISS’s “Strutter ’78,” and “I Was Made For Lovin’ You”; Rod Stewart’s “Do Ya Think I’m Sexy“; and Elton John’s Thom Bell Sessions and Victim of Love. Though disco-rock was a great commercial success during the disco era, it has received limited acknowledgement in post-disco scholarship. This thesis addresses the lack of existing scholarship pertaining to disco-rock. It examines both disco and disco-rock as products of cultural shifts during the 1970s. Disco was linked to the emergence of underground dance clubs in New York City, while disco-rock resulted from the increased mainstream visibility of disco culture during the mid seventies, as well as rock musicians’ exposure to disco music. My thesis argues for the study of a genre (disco-rock) that has been dismissed as inauthentic and commercial, a trend common to popular music discourse, and one that is linked to previous debates regarding the social value of pop music. -

I know that I say it every week, but it never ceases to amaze me how such a tiny band of brothers and sisters, the vast majority of whom are unpaid, manages to put out a full length magazine of such like to once again publicly thank my editorial quality every single week of the year. Before team particularly Doug, John, Corinna and I continue with this week’s musings I would Jessica, although it really goes against the 4 grain to single anyone out of such a hard who read this magazine. Some of you will, working and productive team. no doubt, be shocked by this revelation. DeMille is a fairly gung ho Republican One of my favourite authors is an American whose ethos would seem to be quite far thriller writer called Nelson DeMille who removed from the anarchist ethos of what I may not be familiar to many of the people write for this magazine, and indeed, how I live my life. But he does write cracking stories! Probably my favourite of his books is one called Word of Honour which tells a very interesting and morally intriguing tale. The main protagonist is a wealthy businessman who, at some time during the late 1980s, is on his way to work. -

These new lugs hook onto bolts that at the shell’s nodal are attached to the shell, which allows the lug point. casings themselves to "float" eliminating any direct contact between the lug and the shell. As this design reduces the amount of hardware actually attached to the drum shell, the shell is allowed to vibrate freely. On an 11-inch shell the lug bolts, as well as the YESS mounting system, are all attached to the shell at its nodal point to greatly minimize influence on shell resonance to deliver maximum tone. Another benefit these lugs provide is when it comes time to change the head, it is no longer necessary to remove the tuning bolts from the lugs to remove the hoop. Just loosen the bolts enough to slide the lugs off of the bolts and the hoop comes right off. No more lost washers, etc. and head changes can be done quicker and easier than before. * Nodal point mounting is patented by the Nobel & Cooley Drum Company. Nylon Ring * Beside the Absolute Nouveau Lugs, the Absolute lugs that were offered on O Ring earlier models are also available. -

The Moment In Time The year is 1983, and Weather Report are out on the road, in Europe for the first time in their new incarnati- on. Pastorius? Erskine? Robert Thomas? All are Mr. Gone. Big shoes to fill, and who’s stepped into them but a bunch of kids hardly anyone’s heard of. Hell, even Joe and Wayne hadn’t heard of a couple of them when they hired them less than a year earlier: it was the new drummer, Omar Hakim (23) who had recruited bassist Victor Randall Bailey (22) and percussionist Jose Rossy, because a batch of US gigs were imminent and Zawinul understood that if the sidemen were comfortable with one another, then things would be cool, “because me and Wayne, we can play with anybody …..”.
