Bluegrass and Jewgrass Come and listen in to a radio station where the mighty hosts of heaven sing Turn your radio on, turn your radio on. If you want to hear the songs of Zion coming from the land of endless spring Get in touch with God, turn your radio on. ? thus began the first all-bluegrass radio program in Boston, in the fall of 1973. I know this because I was the creator of, and DJ for, ?The Orange Blossom Special? which aired until I graduated from Brandeis University in the spring of 1975. How I came to love bluegrass music is a long story. But what brings it up now is our Guest Artists for the February 22nd Rock Shabbat, Nefesh Mountain ? a band which creates and performs Jewish bluegrass music. I asked Cantor Alexander if I could write this introduction to help you understand and enjoy something completely different from any Rock Shabbat service we have ever had. Bluegrass is folk music ? music that grows from the experiences of life, played on instruments that were available in the South in the middle of the 20th Century. Guitar, banjo, fiddle, bass; instruments which could be bought or even made inexpensively. Drums are not usually part of a bluegrass band; the banjo?s fifth string provides the rhythm. Sound mixers are often not available, so members of a bluegrass band move back and forth around the single microphone, allowing each singer and each instrument the opportunity to take center stage. Most important, bluegrass is moving music: I challenge you to sit still in your seat when it?s playing! When you listen to bluegrass, there are two things to focus on: the instruments themselves, which take turns with solos like another American music style, jazz; and the vocal harmonies, which are unique in the way each voice mixes with the others to create a complex sound. The results may not sound like music you are used to hearing, but if you give it a chance, I think you?ll like it. One major component of bluegrass music has always been gospel, which presented a challenge for me as a Jewish Studies major ? at Brandeis University, no less. I stayed away from playing gospel on my show, but I admit that I heard some of the most beautiful and haunting bluegrass music when I listened to gospel albums. Which is why I was first intrigued, then excited when I heard about Nefesh Mountain. They have taken this southern, Christian-oriented style of music and turned it into authentic Jewish music. Honestly, I wasn?t sure it could be done, but I have listened to everything they have recorded and? it works! Since we began Rock Shabbat, we have been blessed with many talented Jewish artists sharing their music and their vision with us. We have been flexible with the ?Rock? part, sometimes pushing more into Jewish folk music than rock and roll, but with each new sound we have learned more and more about the possibilities of Jewish prayer. Nefesh Mountain will expand our musical horizons in a completely new direction, too, and I can?t wait to pray with them. Come join us on February 22nd at 8 p.m. If your knowledge of bluegrass music goes no further than ?Dueling Banjos? and the theme song from the Beverly Hillbillies, I think you will be pleasantly surprised at how much more there is to hear. And if you ever catch me at a karaoke night, get the DJ to play ?Rocky Top? and stand back ? I blow it away! Rabbi Don Weber © 2019, Temple Rodeph Torah

2 Spotlight on New Members

M yerson M att and Cari

Cari and Matt Myerson credit their friends Emilie and Leon Goldstein with leading them to Rodeph Torah. They attended a Shabbat service and found the temple community to be warm and close-knit. Along the way, they have found other friends who are TRT members. The Myersons lived in Queens, N.Y., before moving to Marlboro in 2009. They consider this area a good place to raise a family. Their move encouraged Cari?s parents to relocate to Monroe. Cari is a kindergarten teacher at The Hebrew Academy in Marlboro. Matt is an attorney with federal law enforcement in New York. They have three children. Sophie, 12, will celebrate her bat mitzvah this year. She likes the community and Rabbi Donald Weber. Max, 8, will join the Hebrew School this year. Phoebe is 7 years old. Sophie and Max play youth sports: soccer and basketball. Phoebe is into dance and gymnastics. Their most recent family vacation took them to Walt Disney World. Cari and Matt wanted to make sure they connected with Judaism. They have found Rodeph Torah to be the congregation to satisfy that goal.

Sophi Weitz

Sophi Weitz joined TRT after meeting Carol Shangold at an election polling place in Old Bridge. After learning that Sophi had recently lost her husband George, Carol encouraged Sophi to join her at a Bereavement Group meeting. She was so impressed with Rabbi Shira Stern?s leadership (?She is wonderful,?? Sophi says) and joined our community in August. She feels at home at TRT. She was married to George for 59 years before he died of complications from dementia in March 2017. They met in New York and lived in Oakland in Bergen County for 45 years before moving to Old Bridge in 2011. George was an engineer in the Navy for 42 years. Sophi retired from marketing with Leslie Waterworks in Hicksville, N.Y., in 2015. George was an avid stamp collector and maintained and enjoyed an extensive library of military and Judaica books. Sophi says she ?loves physical activities?? such as dancing, tennis and hiking. They traveled extensively, including their last special vacation together: a trip to Romania to see where their ancestors lived. Sophi has two sons, each with dual careers: Adam lives in New York where he is an artist and a psychotherapist. Paul lives in Chicago where he is a massage therapist and a yoga instructor. Elijah, her 18-year-old grandson, is a college freshman in Chicago. She believes the best way to support Judaism is to belong to a temple. She and George were members of Temple Emanuel, a conservative temple, in Franklin Lakes for 45 years. Despite all the recent changes in her life, Sophi says, ?I still have a wonderful life.? 3 Schedule of Services

Purim is celebrated with a public reading? usually in the ? of the Book of (M'gillat Esther), which tells the story of the holiday. Under the rule of King Ahashverosh, , the king's prime minister, plots to exterminate all of the Jews of Persia. His plan is foiled by Queen Esther and her cousin Mordechai, who ultimately save the Jews of Persia from destruction. The reading of the m'gillah typically is a rowdy affair, punctuated by booing and noise-making when Haman's name is read aloud. Purim is an unusual holiday in many respects. First, Esther is the only biblical book in which God is not mentioned. Second, Purim, like , traditionally is viewed as a minor festival, but elevated to a major holiday as a result of the Jewish historical experience. Over the centuries, Haman became the embodiment of every anti-Semite in every land where Jews were oppressed. The significance of Purim lies not so much in how it began, but in what it has become: a thankful and joyous affirmation of Jewish survival against all odds. Customs and Rituals In the , we read that Purim is a time for "feasting and merrymaking," as well as for "sending gifts to one another and presents to the poor" (Esther 9:22). In addition to reading the M'gillah (Book of Esther), celebrants dress in costumes, have festive parties, perform "Purim-spiels," silly theatrical adaptations of the story of the M'gillah, send baskets of food () to friends, and give gifts to the poor (matanot l'evyonim). Hamantaschen Hamantaschen (Yiddish for Haman's pockets) are three-cornered pastries filled with poppy seeds (mohn in Yiddish), fruit preserves, chocolate, or other ingredients that are traditionally eaten on Purim. In Israel during the weeks leading up to Purim, the aroma of freshly baked hamantaschen can be smelled on every block. Their triangular shape is thought to be reminiscent of Haman's hat or ears. Costumes As part of the carnival-like atmosphere of Purim, many children and adults wear costumes. Some attribute this tradition to the fact that Esther initially ?masked? her Jewish identity. Now a vibrant and widely practiced custom, some choose to dress as characters from the Purim story, while others select Jewish heroes from throughout history.

6 Helping Hands

Tikkun Olam from Within - TRT Helping Hands

Almost a year ago, a few members of TRT met to discuss an idea. Although we are such a strong community that comes together to help other communities in need, sometimes we need to think of our own members who need assistance. That was our starting point. TRT Helping Hands initiative is a trained group of volunteers who are members of our TRT family. The volunteers are committed to providing help and support to individuals and families in our temple community who are experiencing life-changing medical and/ or other crises.

The group hopes to provide confidential assistance in daily life activities such as picking up groceries, picking up medication, rides to a local doctor, rides to a service or a temple activity. If you need help as described above, reach out to our clergy and they will ask one of our coordinators to contact you. After a conversation with a coordinator, it will be determined how we can help you, and logistical arrangements will be made to get volunteers from our pool to reach out to you. Sisterhood

Social Action

Once again our TRT community responded with amazing generosity during our annual Ner Shel Tzedakah (?Candle of Righteousness?) toy and coat drive. The Emergency Housing and Advocacy Program in Freehold, St. Augustine's Episcopal Church in Asbury Park, and Lion of Judah Church in Trenton were the recipients of over 35 bags of toys for children of all ages and coats for men, women, and children. Although it has been a mild winter so far, we know the cold weather is coming and these coats will be needed. The toys donated were the only Christmas gifts these children received this year. Everyone who donated should know that they made someone else feel very warm and happy. The Mitzvah of the Month for February is our annual SOUP collection for Fulfill of Monmouth and Ocean Counties. If you are hosting or going to a Super Bowl party, please turn it into a SOUPer Bowl Party and ask your guests to bring a can or two of soup. A soup collection bin will be in the atrium for the entire month of February.

7 Thank you to everyone who made meatloaf for the Soup Kitchen at St. Augustine?s Episcopal Church as part of our January Mitzvah of the Month. They very much appreciated every loaf received. They will use it the coming months when their food supplies are very low. Please join us on Sunday, February 24th when we visit our friends at Wicker Memorial Baptist Church. We have been invited to join their Sunday morning worship service followed by a luncheon. If you have attended in the past, you know you don?t want to miss this service. If you?ve never attended, it?s time to experience a joyous celebration of community. The church is located at 180 Greenwood Road off Tennent Road. Please arrive by 10:15 a.m. The members of Wicker Memorial Baptist Church will be attending a special Saturday Rock Shabbat service followed by a luncheon on Saturday, March 30th at 10:00 a.m. If you would like to attend the luncheon after the service, please see the flyer in the back of this newsletter. In honor of Queen Esther, our March Mitzvah of the Month will be a collection for 180 Turning Lives Around. This organization helps relocate and support families affected by domestic violence. They are in need of toiletries, household paper goods, and diapers. Look for the collection bin in the atrium starting March 1st. We continue our partnership with the soup kitchen at St. Augustine?s Episcopal Church in Asbury Park. If you would like to volunteer to help serve meals on any Sunday from 11:30 a.m.-1:00 p.m., please contact Andrea at [email protected] or 732-673-7320 Please join us at our meetings on Wednesday, February 27th and Wednesday, March 27th at 7:00 p.m. Andrea Kazin & The Social Action Committee News and Notes at TRT DO YOU LIKE USING SOCIAL MEDIA? ARE YOU THE CHILD OR GRANDCHILD OF A HOLOCAUST SURVIVOR? On Yom HaShoah, Holocaust Memorial Day, we would like to include the stories which survivors told their children about the Holocaust. If you are willing to share a 3-4 minute story which your relative told you, please contact Rabbi Weber at [email protected]. Yom HaShoah is the evening of May 1, 2019. A DAY OF REFLECTION Last April 11th, we all lit a candle as a community in memory of the six million Jews who were systematically murdered by Nazi Germany during the Holocaust between 1941-1945. More than 70 years have gone by, but the lessons our people learned are becoming hazy. Once again, Nazis are walking proudly down the streets, even here in the United States. Now, more than ever, it is time to reflect on how we can move forward in a meaningful way. That dark hour in our world?s history impacted many lives: entire families perished, congregations like ours were erased from history, and most Jews were uprooted from homes they had known their entire lives. Many of them came here, with only the clothes on their backs, and had to start all over. Unimaginable! In the years immediately after the Holocaust, the generation that survived those horrors was focused on rebuilding a national home for the Jewish people in Israel and redefining the Jewish people in modern time, as well as making the world a better place. As a daughter of two survivors, I felt how my parents were trying to protect me from the gruesome details, while they still shared with me the spirit of moving from Shoah, calamity, to Tekuma, rebirth. While we were touching base with several members of TRT prior to this year?s Yom Hashoah, I realized how much of our community was impacted by the Shoah. A few members shared stories with the students in our religious school, and it

continued next page 8 became clear how these family stories were meaningful to the children. Each story has a lesson. We should not forget those lessons as we teach our next generation to carry on social justice, have tolerance, and willingly practice inclusion. The point is to not only remember those who perished and honor those who survived, but also to maintain an inter-generational bank of knowledge to be shared with our religious school students in the years to come. If you would like to assist in this year?s Yellow Candle project, please contact me at [email protected]. Tmima Grinvald MEMBERSHIP BENEFIT: RABBI STERN OFFERS COUNSELING Is there something you would like to discuss? Is there a stressor in your life that you want to address? One of the TRT Membership Benefits is the opportunity to have up to three pastoral counseling sessions with Rabbi Stern at no cost. Rabbi Stern is a Board Certified chaplain, offering pastoral counseling to individuals and groups. To learn more, or to make an appointment, call the office at 732-308-0055 or call Rabbi Stern directly and confidentially at 732-580-2569.

WOULD YOU SHARE YOUR (JEWISH) WISDOM WITH US? Temple Rodeph Torah invites you, our members, to share your wisdom with us by speaking at a Shabbat evening service. We will give you plenty of time to prepare and we will guide you along the way. Your topic should teach something which relates to Judaism, and which you feel will be of interest to the people attending the service. We hope you will draw on your own life experiences: What have you learned from your life, or from a specific event in your life, and how could that be of value to others? f you are interested in learning more about this opportunity, contact Rabbi Weber at 732-409-1268, or [email protected].

EDNA COLEMAN ISRAEL SCHOLARSHIP FUND

TRT offers scholarships to any student presently in the confirmation program or who has been confirmed, up through and including the summer after 12th grade. Money in the Israel Scholarship Fund will be equally divided among all students traveling to Israel this summer on an approved youth Israel trip, not to exceed $1,000 per student. Requests for scholarship money should be in writing to the Education Committee. Contact Ellen Finkelstein, at 732-972-8624, or [email protected] for more information. We appreciate the congregation's generosity in considering the Edna Coleman Israel Scholarship Fund when making a donation to the temple.

SPECIAL SERVICES SPONSORSHIP

Throughout the year, TRT hosts a variety of services with outside speakers or other unique aspects. Several of these events are planned for the coming year, but we need help from the congregation to make these events possible. We are seeking special service sponsors. For $360, you can sponsor our Eat, Pray, Learn service, Sacred Texting or Blessing of the Animals service, to name just a few examples. If you are interested in sponsoring a service or learning more about other sponsorship opportunities, please contact the temple office at 732-308-0055. SOMEONE YOU KNOW IS WAITING TO JOIN TRT Did you know that most of our members joined because they knew someone who already belonged? Your invitation to a neighbor or friend to join you at a service is the best advertising we have. We are also happy to send our Newsletter to any interested family, but we can't do it until you tell us who they are. Call the temple office, at 732-308-0055, and give us the names; we will take it from there. And if they join (in any category other than Parent/ Grandparent), and remain members for a minimum of six months, you get a month?s dues free! Think about what your belonging to Rodeph Torah means to you, and help us reach out to others. (Besides, you can always use another driver for the carpool...) PLEASE HELP US HELP YOU When scheduling a life-cycle event in which you would like either Rabbi Weber, Cantor Alexander or Rabbi Stern to participate (weddings, namings, funerals, unveilings, etc.), please call them first. If you set the time for such events without calling, it may be impossible for them to attend. Though a funeral overrides almost everything else, clearing the time in advance may save us from disrupting classes or programs already scheduled. We understand the stressful nature of such times in our lives, and with your help we can make them a little easier on everyone. If you have any 9 questions about life-cycle events, please feel free to call Rabbi Weber, at 732-409-1268, Cantor Alexander, at 732-308-2311, or Rabbi Stern, at 732-580-2569.

ARE YOU GOING ON VACATION OUTSIDE OF THE U.S.A.? WANT TO SEE A REFORM CONGREGATION IN ANOTHER COUNTRY? How do you find your larger Progressive/ Reform/ Liberal family when traveling outside of North America? The process is different than what you find in North America, where and Jewish institutions in North America generally have an "open-door" policy and regularly welcome visitors. The best way is to have the World Union for Progressive Judaism (WUPJ) make the connection for you.

There are two options available for your search. Several weeks in advance of your vacation, go to www.wupj.org/find-a-community to search for WUPJ congregations. You will see a drop down for country and city, then you click on the search icon. If there is a community in that location, it will appear, with the synagogue's website and contact email. Email the contact directly. It is suggested that people include their full name, Temple Rodeph Torah, Marlboro, NJ. Provide your travel dates, planned accommodations, when you would like to visit the congregation, the number of people in your party, and a way to contact you once you are there.

There is also a new app, Find a Community, which will allow you to locate a congregation, get in contact with them about your trip and what you're looking for, and get directions when you get there. All of our affiliated congregations are listed in the app, so you won't miss anything. Please note that some locations, including some major cities, do not contain congregations affiliated with the Progressive Jewish Movement. To download, go to www.wupj.org/app
