19 Whilst we were studying map skills last half term Oliver brought in a model of Mount Snowdon he had created from cardboard using GIS (Geography Information Systems) to show the class when we were studying relief - one of the key map skills we look at which shows height and shape on a map. Oliver demonstrated courage and high levels of confidence in showing the model and describing the techniques he had used to develop this to the rest of the class. Myself and the class were really grateful for Oliver bringing his model into school and bringing learning to life within our Geography lessons. Da iawn ti Oli!

20 Change is happening - it is our aim to make Newtown High School one of the best.

“In 2018, performance improved in many key indicators. In the level 2 threshold, including English and mathematics, performance improved by more than nine percentage points. The proportion of pupils achieving level 2 in English and level 2 in mathematics improved in 2018 and compares favourably with similar schools.”

*New performance measures and exam specifications were introduced in 2015, with students first sitting the new exams in 2017. Subsequent amendments have been made in 2018 and 2019.

“Many pupils make suitable progress in lessons. They are attentive and show respect to teachers and peers. A few pupils make strong progress. They deepen their subject knowledge and understanding in lessons and use this well to develop their ideas. Many pupils recall prior learning suitably. A few do this very well and apply their understanding effectively to help them tackle challenging tasks.”

“The school has developed a more strategic approach to developing teaching and assessment. This includes the use of first hand evidence to identify aspects of teaching that need to improve across the school and in specific departments. Furthermore, the school has introduced a compre- hensive range of beneficial initiatives to support improvements in the areas identified. All staff have received valuable professional learning in developing effective teaching strategies. This includes access to a coaching programme to address specific areas for improvement, including developing meaningful questioning to consolidate pupils’ learning.” 21 “The rate of pupils’ attendance has improved significantly since Reduction in the time of the core inspection and now compares very favoura- detentions bly with that of similar schools.” Reduction in fixed term exclusions

Reduction in reported bullying Best attendance of all incidents Powys Secondary Lowest fixed term Schools exclusions of all Powys Secondary Schools

“A majority of pupils behave well in lessons and around the school. However, low- level disruption occurs in a minority of lessons and interferes with pupils’ learning.”

So, we have introduced… Ready to Learn: A new behaviour approach for Newtown High School.

Following parent voice, pupil perception and Estyn feedback we have made considerable changes to our behavior policy The new ‘Ready to Learn’ approach was introduced to Newtown High School on 1st July 2019. Essentially, the system aims to:

 provide clarity for staff and students about acceptable behaviour and the consequences of misbehaviour;

 encourage students to take responsibility for their own actions;

 eliminate disruptive behaviour, so that there is a culture of achievement, ambition and learning everywhere in the school, and no learning time is wasted;

 enable teachers to deliver engaging and creative lessons, experiment and take risks, without concern for behavioural interruptions as barriers. “The school has effectively helped develop a clear understanding of bullying and what to do if it oc- curs. Most students have no concern and many be- lieve the school deals well with instances of bully- ing. The school monitors suitably and provides appropriate support where needed.” 22 23 24
