FALL/WINTER 2016-17 PROGRAM GUIDE A better life for everyone.TM 990 Pelham Parkway South, Bronx, NY 10461 | 718.792.1800 | bronxhouse.org A message from Chief Executive Officer Howard Martin Every day, over 1,500 people from our surrounding communities come to a Bronx House program – more than 15,000 people a year! The 2015-16 program year brought many new and exciting programs and crucial services to our community, such as our new Special Needs Department, funded through the generosity of the Butler Foundation and Councilman James Vacca, the first and only Youth Fencing program in the Bronx, funded by the Sports for Youth Foundation, and our free, full day “PRE-K FOR ALL” program. All of these programs had a great first year, and will have an even better second year! Beginning January 2017, our primary funding partner, UJA-Federation of NY is celebrating a major historic event as they launch their Second Century. UJA is a force for good for New Yorkers of all backgrounds and communities worldwide, and we’re a proud partner in this work. We continue to share a compelling vision for the future, and are excited to mark this milestone together in the year ahead. As they move into their second century, UJA-Federation is making critical investments in our global community and the future. Revitalizing the Henry Kaufmann Campgrounds, the largest Jewish-sponsored camp facility in the country is an investment in our children, guaranteeing them the same quality journey that previous generations have enjoyed. We’ll continue our successful “Moses Project”, a Jewish cultural and educational program designed for children from households with one Jewish parent and funded by UJA-Federation of NY. This program features cultural and educational experiences that help families significantly in their understanding of what it means to be Jewish. These programs, along with our partnership with Temple Hatikva – housed at Bronx House, help us preserve our dedication to our Jewish roots and values. I’d also like to acknowledge some of the people whose continued support to Bronx House allows us to provide “a better life for everyone”: • Our Board of Directors - who give so generously of their time and resources. • UJA - Federation of NY - from whom we receive the majority of our philanthropic funds. Our Elected Officials: • Bronx Boro President Reuben Diaz Jr., NYC Councilman James Vacca, NYS Assemblyman Mark Gjonaj, NYS Senator Jeff Klein, US Congressman Joe Crowley. Our City and State Funding Sources: • NYC Dept. for the Aging, NYC Dept. of Youth and Community Development, NYC Dept. of Cultural Affairs, NYC Dept. of Education, NYS Office of Children & Family Services, NYS Council on the Arts. Our Foundation and Corporate Support: • Butler Foundation, Music for Youth, Sports for Youth, Con Edison, Washington Square Fund, Montefiore Hospital, WellCare, Fidelis Care and Affinity Health Plan. Finally, I want to thank some of our Partners in the Community: • Ramapo for Children, Bronx River Alliance, Self Help, NYLAG, JCC of Pelham Parkway & Bronx Jewish Community Council. So come visit your neighborhood community center – because we are “The Place to Be”! Howie Martin Chief Executive Officer 2 Fall/Winter 2016-17 • 718.792.1800 • bronxhouse.org What’s Inside!
