SUMMARY

Project Name: South Holmwood Brickworks Location: Beare Green, Surrey NGR: TQ 519320 142285 Type: Strip, Map and Sample Exercise Date: 4-12 July 2016 Planning Reference: MO96/0810 Location of Archive: Cotswold Archaeology Andover (to be deposited with Museum) Site Code: SHN 16

An archaeological strip, map and sample exercise was undertaken by Cotswold Archaeology during groundworks associated with clay extraction at South Holmwood Brickworks.

A pair of shallow fire pits was excavated; they are undated. A possible medieval or post- medieval ditch and bank preserves a boundary within the woodland shown on all Ordnance Survey maps from the late 19th century. A shallow and wide undated feature was also identified; this matched a trackway from the Ordnance Survey mapping. A very small quantity of undated and undiagnostic flint of possible Mesolithic date and medieval and post- medieval pottery was retrieved from the shallow forest floor overburden, which overlay the natural substrate.

1. INTRODUCTION

1.1 In July 2016 Cotswold Archaeology (CA) carried out a programme of archaeological strip, map and sample for Ibstock Brick Ltd at South Holmwood Brickworks, Surrey (centred at NGR: TQ 1878 4224; Fig. 1).

1.2 The strip, map and sample exercise was undertaken to fulfil a condition attached to a planning consent granted by Surrey County Council (SCC) for an expansion of a clay quarry (Planning ref: MO96/0810). The objective of the strip, map and sample exercise was to record all archaeological remains exposed during the development.

1.3 The watching brief was carried out in accordance with requirements issued by the Surrey Heritage Conservation Team (SHCT) the archaeological advisor to the Local Planning Authority (LPA), and with a subsequent detailed Written Scheme of Investigation (WSI) produced by CA (2013) and approved by SCC. The fieldwork also followed the Standard and Guidance for an archaeological watching brief (IfA 2009), the Management of Archaeological Projects 2 (English Heritage 1991) and the Management of Research Projects in the Historic Environment (MORPHE): Project Manager’s Guide (EH 2006).

The site

1.4 The site covers an area of approximately 46 hectares, and lies 6 miles south of , Surrey, near Beare Green Village. The brickworks include storage areas, a clay quarry, lagoon, pasture and woodland. The proposed extension lies immediately east of the current working area, and comprises a rectangular area approximately 0.55h in size (Fig. 2). The extension had been under woodland and woodland is still present to the east. The site lies on an east-west aligned hogs-back ridge much of which has been removed by quarrying. The highest point, a little to the north of mid-site, is at c.89.5m above Ordnance Datum (aOD), the height dropping to c.85.5m aOD to the north edge of the site and c.84m aOD to the south.

1.5 The underlying solid geology of the area is mapped as Mudstone of the Weald Clay Formation of the lower Cretaceous Period (BGS 2013). No superficial deposits are mapped. A yellowish brown to yellow clay was revealed during stripping consistent with the predicted deposits.

2. ARCHAEOLOGICAL BACKGROUND

2.1 The site has formerly been the focus of an archaeological survey (Bannister 1995), which included an assessment of the archive resource and a site visit to record any man-made features. A summary of the results of this survey is presented below.

2.2 No pre-medieval sites were recorded within the site itself at the time of the survey in 1995; however, the south-eastern area of the brickworks once formed part of a medieval farmstead. A parish boundary, with possible medieval origins, lies in the eastern part of the site. The southern boundary in this area of the site is also likely to be medieval in origin, as it follows a route way linking the medieval settlements of Beare Green and . Wood banks and ditches were also recorded as substantial earthworks within the site at the time of the survey and are also likely to be of medieval date.

2.3 A watching brief carried out by Cotswold Archaeology (CA 2007), in an area towards the eastern boundary of the site, did not identify any archaeological features or deposits. Ten pieces of worked flint were recovered, dated broadly to the prehistoric period.

2.4 A subsequent archaeological strip, map and sample undertaken by CA during March and April 2011 revealed three undated features within the stripped area, all of which contained charcoal and evidence of in situ heating/burning. A radiocarbon date for a fragment of alder/hazel wood from one such feature suggests possibly small-scale tree clearance in the Late Bronze Age or Early Iron Age. Six pieces of unstratified worked flint were also recovered during the fieldwork (CA 2012).

2.5 A further strip, map and sample undertaken by CA during June 2013 revealed a limited amount of archaeology. A small, possibly truncated, presumed burnt tree stump similar to three previously excavated in 2011 was recorded. An undated but probably medieval or post medieval ditch and bank, with a buried soil preserved under the bank, preserves the boundary of woodland shown on Ordnance Survey mapping. A possible shallow and wide undated ditch was also identified. A small quantity of probably Mesolithic flint was retrieved from the top of the natural substrate (CA 2013).

3. AIMS AND OBJECTIVES

3.1 The objectives of the strip, map and sample exercise are to:

• ensure the adequate record of any buried archaeological remains that may be exposed within the defined strip, map and sample area prior to their removal by development; and any additional archaeological mitigation required for additional proposed works impacting on archaeological deposits • produce a plan of all archaeological features exposed within the defined strip, map and sample area • investigate and record exposed archaeological features/deposits in order to clarify both their date, character, and significance and to provide a clear understanding of their chronology • ensure that any artefacts/environmental evidence is recorded, assessed and - if appropriate - analysed to an acceptable standard • make available the results of the investigations

3.2 The specific aims of the work were to:

• record any evidence of past settlement or other land use • recover artefactual evidence to date any evidence of past settlement that may be identified • sample and analyse environmental remains to create a better understanding of past land use and economy

4. METHODOLOGY

4.1 The fieldwork followed the methodology set out within the WSI (CA 2013). An initial phase of clearance, comprising tree felling, removal of saleable timber, burning of unusable timber and uprooting of tree boles was not archaeologically inspected, but an archaeologist was present during the removal of overburden (Fig. 2).

4.2 Where archaeological deposits were encountered written, graphic and photographic records were compiled in accordance with CA Technical Manual 1: Fieldwork Recording Manual (2007).

6 © Cotswold Archaeology South Holmwood Brickworks, Surrey: Archaeological Strip, Map and Sample

4.3 The archive and artefacts from the investigation are currently held by CA at their offices in Andover. Subject to the agreement of the legal landowner the artefacts along with the site archive will be deposited with a suitable repository. Until such time as one becomes available in Surrey for archaeological archives the archive will be stored at the CA offices in Andover. A summary of information from this project, set out within Appendix D, will be entered onto the OASIS online database of archaeological projects in Britain.

5. RESULTS (FIGS 2-5)

5.1 This section provides an overview of the excavation results; detailed summaries of the contexts, finds and environmental samples (biological evidence) are to be found in Appendices A-C.

5.2 The natural geological substrate 2001 consisting of a yellowish brown clay, was revealed across most of the site at a depth of up to 0.2m below present ground level. This was overlain by a mixed deposit 2000 of leaf mould and clay silt, with branches and tree roots present. There was substantial disturbance of both the substrate and overburden from modern forestry and quarrying operations, and bioturbation in the form of roots, tree throws and animal burrows.

5.3 Recent forestry and quarrying operations had left deposits of silt clay up to 0.4m in depth in the northeast and southeast corners of the site and along the western edge – 2002, 2004 and 2003 respectively. These overlay the mixed overburden.

5.4 The most notable modern disturbance took the form of heat affected natural substrate in the mid-north of the site where a large bonfire had been located during recent forestry operations. Also, a deeply rutted trackway c.3m across and 100m long ran along the western part of the site 4-8m from its western edge. The natural substrate to the west of this track was somewhat disturbed from recent forestry and quarrying.

5.5 Two pits were identified – 2013 and 2015 (fig. 3). Both were round, 0.75m in diameter, concave in profile with some irregularity. They were also shallow, 0.06 and 0.13m deep respectively. The natural substrate into which these pits were cut showed signs of heating – a reddening of the clay silt – this did not extend more

7 © Cotswold Archaeology South Holmwood Brickworks, Surrey: Archaeological Strip, Map and Sample

than 20mm into the substrate and was not accompanied by appreciable hardening or any other sign of intense heating that might indicate industrial or craft activities. The fills of these pits - 2012 and 2014 – were rich in charcoal but contained no artefactual evidence. A bulk sample was taken of the latter (the former feature was considered too shallow and root disturbed for sampling).

5.6 A ditch and bank, respectively 2008 and 2009, were exposed in the southern part of the site (fig. 4). The continuation of these features in much eroded form could be seen in the woodland to the east. The bank material, 2009, was a yellow brown, redeposited natural silt clay. Ditch 2008, aligned east to west, was 0.75m wide, 0.1 deep, and had an irregular profile much disturbed by roots. The ditch fill 2007 was similarly disturbed by root action. The ditch ran east-west across the site and a similar profile and fill was excavated c.18m to the west as 2010, 2011. Neither fill produced any artefactual evidence. The feature was truncated c.7m from the western edge of the site by modern rutting and was not visible in the disturbed ground to the west of that.

5.7 A linear feature 2006 could be observed for c.10m in the northern part of the site and where excavated was 1.8m wide and 0.15m deep with a somewhat indistinct profile (fig. 4). The only fill, 2005, was a brown grey clay silt that contained no artefacts. In plan this feature was somewhat ephemeral and aligned with a similar feature (1003) observed in previous excavations immediately to the west (CA 2013, 6).

5.8 The only artefactual material that was recovered took the form of pottery and worked flint from the overburden 2000 over the natural substrate 2001 (see below and Appendices B and C). This layer also contained modern litter (glass and plastic bottles, aluminium cans etc); these were not retained.

6. THE FINDS

6.1 Artefactual material recovered from the evaluation is listed in Appendix B and discussed further below.

8 © Cotswold Archaeology South Holmwood Brickworks, Surrey: Archaeological Strip, Map and Sample

Pottery 6.2 A total of three sherds (51g) of pottery were recorded from overburden layer 2000. Two very heavily abraded sherds of medieval pottery occur in the same red-fired sandy fabric, possibly an oxidised Hampshire/Surrey Border Ware. A strap handle in this fabric probably comes from a jug. It features thumbed edges and a central line of circular stab marks. One sherd of painted ‘refined’ whiteware is dateable from the later 18th to 19th centuries.

Worked flint 6.3 A total of four items (23g) of prehistoric worked flint were recorded from overburden layer 2000. All are unfeatured flakes are on a mid-grey flint, and none are closely dateable.

7. THE BIOLOGICAL EVIDENCE

7.1 A single sample (16 litres of soil) was processed from the charcoal rich fill 2014 of undated fire pit 2015 with the intention of recovering environmental evidence of industrial or domestic activity on the site. It was also hoped that the environmental evidence might provide an indication of the date of the feature. The sample was processed by standard flotation procedures (CA Technical Manual No. 2).

7.2 Fill 2014 (sample 1) within fire pit 2015 contained large quantities of charcoal fragments greater than 2mm. The well preserved charcoal assemblage included round and mature wood fragments and showed no evidence of vitrification. No plant remains were recorded within this sample. The assemblage is likely to be representative of dumped material.

7.3 The environmental remains provide no indication of the date of this fill and no firm evidence for any specific activity taking place on site. Although there is some potential for charcoal analysis to provide some information on species selection and the exploitation and management of the local woodland resource, this would be of limited value while the assemblage is undated and likely to be fairly recent in date. No further work is proposed on this material

8. DISCUSSION

8.1 The small quantity of unfeatured flint flakes recovered from the overburden were not closely dateable but it is feasible that they date to the Mesolithic period. This is based on the previous finds in the area; Wymer (1977) lists over 1000 pieces of this date from Holmwood. Some of the flint recovered immediately to the west in 2013 was also Mesolithic, in addition to undated material (CA 2013, 6-7). A similar scatter of undated flint was found in 2012 (CA 2012, 6).

8.3 The form and fills of the two pits 2013 and 2015 indicates that they are probably fire pits, most likely the result of recent use of the woodlands but possibly of an earlier date. The sample taken from 2015 was thought likely to be dumped material. These pits are rather different from features identified in previous work in the area of the quarry immediately to the west of the current site (CA 2012, features 1, 4 and 7; CA 2013, pit 1007). These were interpreted as tree stumps that had been burnt in situ as the remains of carbonised roots were found extending out of the features. One of the features was radiocarbon dated to the late Bronze or early Iron Age (CA 2012, feature 4, 5-8). However, no such roots were present in pits 2013 and 2015 and, as noted above, the charcoal was dumped rather than in situ. These pits are undated but could be associated with recent activity in the woodlands, either for forestry or leisure.

8.4 Ditch 2011 and bank 2009 are undated; the alignment of these features corresponds well with a boundary shown on Ordnance Survey mapping from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries within Knowle Copse (figs 4 and 5). The age of this copse is not presently known. Natural have classified the Copse as Ancient and Semi- Natural woodland (Magic 2013), although none of the currently standing trees appear to be of a great age based on their girth (Rotherham et al, 2008, 199). However, the initial survey (Bannister 1995) identified earthworks of probable medieval date, possibly related to a medieval farmstead. Therefore this ditch and bank, and its much-eroded continuation surviving off site to the east, may originate from medieval activity. This feature was not recorded in the area immediately to the west in 2012 and 2013. It may have been too truncated or disturbed by forestry activity and bioturbation to be identified.

8.5 The undated linear feature 2006 in the northern part of the site aligns with a trackway shown on Ordnance Survey mapping from the nineteenth and twentieth

10 © Cotswold Archaeology South Holmwood Brickworks, Surrey: Archaeological Strip, Map and Sample

centuries within Knowle Copse (figs 4 and 5). If it does represent a silted-up trackway this would explain its shallow and somewhat irregular form. This interpretation also applies to the similarly aligned feature 1003 from previous excavations immediately to the west (CA 2013, 6).

9. CA PROJECT TEAM
