2009-10 South Dakota State University Golf 31 2009 NCAA Division I Men’s South Central Regional

South Dakota State senior Trent Peterson became the first Jackrabbit to qualify for postseason play at the NCAA Division I level when he was selected as an at-large pick for the South Central Regional, played May 14-16 at Karsten Creek Golf Course in Stillwater, Okla. Peterson, the No. 1 seed amongst the 10 individuals compet- ing, finished in a tie for 13th after shooting 10-over-par 226. He was the first-round leader after a 67, but then fell into a tie for 14th after a second-round 81 gave him a 36-hole score of 149. He shot 78 in his final collegiate round. The first round marked Peterson’s school-record 100th round. After posting an even-par 36 on the front nine, he caught fire, making five consecutive birdies on the back nine. He parred his final four holes to close with a 31 on the back. The 67, which was the third of Peterson’s career, is tied for the second lowest in school history and also the second-best ever posted in competition at Karsten Creek G.C., the home course of Oklahoma State. Oklahoma State’s Kevin Tway won the event by a shot with an even-par 216 (74-72-70) total. Oklahoma State won the team title by 22 shots, posting a 17-over 881 (296-289-296) total. The win advanced the Cowboys to their record 63rd consecutive NCAA Championship. Baylor’s Cody Paladino tied for third at 5-over 221 (74-73- 74). He was the low individual not on one of the five teams to advance and received the individual bid to the finals. Peterson finished second amongst the 10 individuals, three behind UTEP’s Roger Sloan (77-72-74—223). Oral Roberts, The Summit League champions, placed 13th in the event at 969 (319-325-325). Southern Utah’s Nate Page, an at-large pick, tied for 21st at 227 (73-76-78). Texas A&M ended up winning the NCAA national title.

With a record enrollment of 12,376 students in the fall of 2008, South Dakota State remains the state’s largest institution of higher learning.

SDSU EARLY HISTORY Located in Brookings, the Territorial Legislative Assembly authorized SDSU in 1881 to serve as the state’s land grant institution. Territorial Council member John O’Brien Scobey managed to secure Dakota Agricultural College for his city. Although allocations fell short of the actual cost, the school did open in the fall of 1884 because the president, TOMPKINS ALUMNI CENTER FEATURES THE AGGIE SCHOOL CLOCK TOWER. The museum's collections include early Sioux Indian tribal art, the famed Harvey Dunn paintings of pioneer life and the exclusive Vera Way Marghab linens. The State Agricultural Heritage Museum transformed the former Stock Judging Pavilion into a home for exhibits that record and preserve the agrarian heritage of South Dakota. The 70-acre McCrory Gardens and South Dakota Arboretum, located south and east of campus, provide a beautiful setting for area residents and tourists to enjoy a stroll through the radiant colors and fragrances of one of the top 10 small ornamental gardens in the nation. THE COUGHLIN CAMPANILE South Dakota State’s most recognizable landmark may be the 165-foot Coughlin Campanile, the state’s largest chimes tower. A climb of 179 steps leads to a panoramic view of the city. 1909 Engineering graduate Charles Coughlin, who later went on to become head of the Briggs & Stratton Corporation, donated the statuesque structure on the west end of campus at a cost of $65,000. Coughlin laid the campanile’s corner- stone on June 10, 1929. Since then, its chimes call students to classes with the famous Westminster peals.
