His father use to encourage him to “SMILE” because it is the 6 EPIPHANY C ATHEDRAL “sunshine DIOCESE OF of V theENICE soul.” - FLORIDA Next we introduce to you Ed Ochen

A quiet servant of the Lord, Ed Ochen, will turn 94 on November 24th. He joined Epiphany 18 years ago in 1999 and immediately continued the service he had been participating in with his other parishes. He was transplanted from where he was an usher and continued at Our Lady of Lourdes in Venice. Soon after he came to Epiphany and he and his wife became very involved in Epiphany activities where he co-chaired the Epiphany Festival. He has been a member of the Knights of Columbus since 1952 where he has served as a Grand Knight, Board member, and to date a Trustee. For 57 years he has maintained membership with The International Order of also as a Board member, Grand Knight and Trustee. He belongs to the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulcher of Jerusalem.

Ed retired from Ford after 38 years and then moved on to Chrysler for five years. He was a purchasing specialist at both companies and remained doing consultant work long after his retirement and move to Venice. To this day he remains active with the Veterans and is especially proud of his service with the Army Air Corp flying B26 planes in the European Theater during WWII as one of their youngest pilots.

In 1945, Ed was a guest at a wedding & Ann was a bridesmaid. When Ed first laid eyes on her it was love at first sight and he told the friend he was with; "See that gal, I'm going to marry her" and he did. Ed was a very loving and devoted husband for 56 years. The couple are parents to three daughters, six grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. Before Ann passed away in 2003 both were very involved in life at Epiphany even traveling to the Holy Land with Bishop Nevins.

As quiet and unassuming as he is, he loved serving the Lord as an altar server in his youth and again in his later years at Epiphany. Even though he can no longer manage the steps to the altar, he continues to be a Eucharistic Minister of Holy Communion at the 4:00pm Mass.

With a mind as sharp as ever, he will reminisce with stories to entertain all who ask.

May God continue to Bless His servant, Ed. 7 Vee Garry-Chiulli is our next During my time here at the Cathedral, I long standing parishioner served for seven years on the Pastoral Council, have loved being a CCW member, I packed up my mother and brought her and am totally grateful to be a part of the with us to Florida when my husband prayerful Emmaus sisters’ ministry. Tom was born a cradle Catholic in Jersey City, NJ attending a Greek Orthodox Church. In 2004 after deciding to come to Florida to visit his mother, some severe health issues placed him in the hospital and soon after he decided to become a permanent resident. He found Epiphany when his cousin made a visit to see him and his mother and wanted to go to Mass. Tom found daily Mass that day the best twenty minutes of his life and since then has been a regular at daily Mass. He enjoyed the comfort and solitude the Mass afforded him. While at Mass he heard parishioners praying the rosary and soon found himself looking forward to joining them. He says he followed the advice of the deacons and priests and learned more about his faith. Today he leads the rosary before the 8:30am daily Mass.

The following year, 2005, while praying one morning after Mass, he was invited to join some parishioners in praying with the Cenacle of the Marian Movement for Priests. They meet every morning Monday thru Friday after the 8:30am Mass and pray for priests in “one voice” as he says.

From growing in his faith he was led to join the Legion of Mary with many of these same people, praying with them and becoming involved with their nursing home visits where they pray the rosary. He also prays with the Legion as they take the pilgrimage statue of our Blessed Virgin into people’s homes so Mary’s statue can stay for a visit. Soon after he found himself doing hospital visits with the Legion of Mary when asked. Today he is an officer in Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception Presidium and also in the Manasota Curia of the Legion of Mary.

After being asked to become an adult altar server he began serving at the 8:30am Mass frequently and sometimes assists in teaching other adults learning to serve. He says they are always looking for people to serve for funerals and daily Masses.

He became involved in other ways to serve the Lord just from going to daily Mass. Marie Rasch got him involved in rosary making, making rosaries to give away. He said there were three of them making rosaries and he didn’t know what he was doing but eventually became very good at making them. This gave him a great satisfaction that he could do a good job and give the rosaries away. The Rosary Makers have given away more than 250 rosaries just last month to missions.

9 Tom Hresko (continued)

Tom says he finds a way to serve the Lord by helping others and through prayer. He says, “I just can’t stop loving the Lord and coming to pray with all my heart, even when I am not feeling my best or in pain.” He says, it’s hard to accept that as he ages there are physical limitations but comforting to find solace in the Lord.

Now the church is his whole life and he feels that the Lord loves him. He can see a need and fill it because of prayer. He always felt he never quite fit in but here, at Epiphany, he feels more responsible and accepted. He prays all the time, while driving, or during all of his activities. He wants everyone to know that praying is always good and it is very important to pray the rosary with intention, even if it’s just to give the gift to our Blessed Mother to do with as she wishes. He says anyone can do this, at home or anywhere. He does feel though that it is easier to pray with others and it gives us strength to then go out and do so on our own. He feels it’s natural to pray with others in communion.

And one of our eldest parishioner’s is Humes Flynn

Humes Flynn is a very quiet and humble gentleman of 101 years of age who attends Mass every Sunday at 7:30am with his granddaughter and a frequent daily Mass attendant. He will be 102 in August.

He walks independently and, in fact, even walks their dog. He has resided in Venice for nine years after a long career in real estate and four other businesses in Barbados, . This gentleman has proudly served four years in the Navy and is blessed with two daughters.

Incidentally, he lives with his grandson in a gorgeous new home. He says his grandson manages 300 nursing homes! Humes has a very good mind and is physically strong for his age.

When asked what his religion/faith meant to him; he said it's just "average."

May God continue to Bless this lovely parishioner. 10 EPIPHANY CATHEDRAL DIOCESE OF VENICE - FLORIDA You won’t want to miss the 80+ workshops with resources and ideas vital to teaching and practicing Christian stewardship in parishes, schools, and dioceses all around the world!!
