Designing around the beauty of natural light
Juan Bernicchi, of ‘BBB Architects’ led the design of The Elm. Here he explains some of the thinking behind the aesthetics of the building.
“In designing The Elm we considered the elevated FLOOR LOCATOR PLAN NORTH ELEVATION NORTH ELEVATION (DAVENPORT ROAD) and prominent North position of the site with its City and sea views, and also its mountain views to the South.
We were determined to create a building that was

“When we started to look for new restaurant premises, we were originally focused on staying in the city, but when we discovered the Woodlands Eatery we were immediately sold. Vredehoek is an untouched gem with enormous potential. The vibe and energy in the area is exactly what we were looking for! We’ve been here since December 2015 and we love it. We’ve loved getting to know our customers and neighbours.
I think there’s great potential for businesses here. The local SPAR is brilliant, and we’re really looking forward to the new community food garden that’s being built down the road, where local school children will be learning to grow their own vegetables.
Being so close to nature every day is a real bonus, too. You can take a stroll through quiet streets or take your bike up into the mountain.
We’re in the process of rebranding the business, and we’ll be officially re-launching in August. Our formula will be simple: to serve delicious food, in a different, fun environment that offers customers great value for money in a gorgeous setting.”
