After just a few years in films, Naushad (1919-2006) went to rule the Hindi cinema music world for around two decades, beginning with the landmark Rattan (1944). His oeuvre (from 1940 to 2005) consists of an unmatched list of jubilees, many of which are musical milestones such as Andaz (1949), Baiju Bawra (1952), Mother India (1957) and Mughal-e-Azam (1960). No individual stays supreme without putting in tremendous efforts to reach the pinnacle and to stay there as long as possible, as our maestro did. And no composer probably moved so cleverly, behind the scenes, than did Naushad to sustain his hold on the public imagination. Although we continue to marvel at the incredible variety of his mellifluous creations that have withstood the test of time, how little most of us know about Naushad the man. Renowned song historian Raju Bharatan fleshes out the real Naushad – his triumphs and tragedies – bringing into play more than 50 years of personal interaction with the tuneful titan. In the process, the author makes the book more sparking with a string of anecdotal gems. For instance: ● How Naushad and his contemporaries despite their professed bonhomie, were fiercely competitive (both musically and monetarily) in their attempts to occupy the ‘top spot’. ● How many days of rehearsal were needed for some of the Baiju Bawara masterpieces? ● How the immortal compositions of Mughal-e-Azam were recorded in a studio no better than a tin shed. This volume also throws new light on the relations and interactions between Naushad and his singers (especially Suraiya, Mohammed Rafi, Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhosle and Shamshad Begum); his songwriters (mainly D.N Madhok, Shakeel Badayuni and Majrooh Sultanpuri); and his ‘unsung’ instrumentalists (some of whom were geniuses in their own right). Ajeeb Aadmi—An Introduction I , Sa‘adat Hasan Manto, Krishan Chandar, Rajinder Singh Bedi, Kaifi Azmi, Jan Nisar Akhtar, Majrooh Sultanpuri, Ali Sardar Jafri, Majaz, Meeraji, and Khawaja Ahmed Abbas. These are some of the names that come to mind when we think of the Progressive Writers’ Movement and modern Urdu literature. But how many people know that every one of these writers was also involved with the Bombay film indus- try and was closely associated with film directors, actors, singers and pro- ducers? Ismat Chughtai’s husband Shahid Latif was a director and he and Ismat Chughtai worked together in his lifetime. After Shahid’s death Ismat Chughtai continued the work alone. In all, she wrote scripts for twelve films, the most notable among them ◊iddµ, Buzdil, Sån® kµ ≤µ∞y≥, and Garm Hav≥. She also acted in Shyam Benegal’s Jun∑n. Khawaja Ahmed Abbas made a name for himself as director and producer for his own films and also by writing scripts for some of Raj Kapoor’s best- known films. Manto, Krishan Chandar and Bedi also wrote scripts for the Bombay films, while all of the above-mentioned poets provided lyrics for some of the most alluring and enduring film songs ever to come out of India. In remembering Kaifi Azmi, Ranjit Hoskote says that the felicities of Urdu poetry and prose entered the consciousness of a vast, national audience through the medium of the popular Hindi cinema; for which masters of Urdu prose, such as Sadat [sic] Hasan Manto, wrote scripts, while many of the Progressives, Azmi included, provided lyrics.

The Criterion www.the-criterion.com An International Journal in English ISSN 0976-8165 Prism of Marginalisation : Sahir Ludhyanvi’s Poetry Mohammad Kamran Ahsan Fulbright Fellow 2011-12 Yale University, New Haven CT USA The genesis of Progressive Writers’ Association in London’s Nanking Hotel in 1934 ushered in a new era in Indian Literature. The group of Progressive writers was pondering over the future of Indian literature that can fit and suit the demands of crucial period of anti-colonial resistance. The manifesto had a strict adherence to the ‘doctrine of social realism in literature’. (Hafiz Malik p-649) though this (Soviet literature, social realism) was attributed by the western critics as a ‘perfect propaganda instrument’. (Ibid) Sajjad Zaheer, the convener of PWA and his peers gave an institutional shape to these progressive ideas; they called a meeting of Marxist intellectuals and prominent literary figures in 1936 in Lucknow. The first PWA meeting was presided by Premchand, a key figure in Hindi-Urdu literature. The manifesto of Progressive Writers’ Association was based on dialectical materialism, ‘the philosophy of the revolutionary working class party.’ (Cornforth, p.7) In this philosophy—dialectical materialism—are embodied the general ideas by means of which the party understands the world which it is seeking to change and in terms of which it defines its aims and works out how to fight for them. In this philosophy are embodied the general ideas by means of which the party seeks to enlighten and organize the whole class, and to influence, guide and win over all the masses of working people, showing the conclusions which must be drawn from each stage of the struggle, helping people to learn from their experience how to go forward toward social realism.

Majrooh: The poet who captured the times. The Hindu Business Line, March 18, 2021 https://www.thehindubusinessline.com/blink/watch/majrooh-sultanpuri-wrote-songs- for-more-than-250-films-in-his-five-decade-long-stint-in-bollywood/article34099511.ece Few people would have heard what can possibly be classified as the first pseudo-rap song in Hindi films- the song “Dekhiye, Sahibo, Who koi, Aur thi”, from the 1966 musical suspense thriller “Teesri Manzil”. All the other songs of this film are heard on the radio even now. All, except this one. And yet, this is an amazingly creative composition with words and phrases sung in a staccato fashion, which could easily pass for what later became the rap style. The song, sung brilliantly by Rafi and Asha and composed by R.D. Burman was written by the eminently versatile Majrooh Sultanpuri. R.D.Burman was a young, unknown composer then. Majrooh of course knew him well as S.D. Burman’s son and assistant. After all Majrooh had worked with S.D. Burman in many of Dev Anand films from the 1950s and the duo had given us hit songs like “Hum hain Rahi pyaar ke hum se kuch na boliye” and “Chal ri sajni ab kya soche” among many others. The story goes that Majrooh recommended him to Shammi Kapoor who was very picky about his songs. Shammi Kappor agreed to listen to this young upstart. The first composition that R.D. Burman played was the one which ultimately became “Deewana mujh sa nahin”- Kapoor immediately recognized it as based on a Nepali folk song which he had heard in Darjeeling! And the rest was history- Teesri Manzil was Burman’s first major hit.

  • Remembering Music Maestro Naushad
REMEMBERING MUSIC MAESTRO NAUSHAD By Abdulrazak Fazal Updated: July 2020 Wikipedia on Naushad Sahab The very first 'Film Fare' award in the 'music' category was won by Naushad Ali for the film 'Beju Bawra' in 1954. His music was divine. I’d taken an instant liking to him. Hailing from an orthodox family listening to music was strictly forbidden in our house, even seeing movies. My music listening was restricted to those old gramophone records being played at the relatives’ weddings or the melodious lilt resounding through the gullies in the serenity of a Zanzibar evening. Also, the Arabic songs by Umme Kulsum, Abdulwahab and Farid al Atrash being played on radios in those Washihiri restaurants sounded pleasurably melodious. So did the 'Tarab' music emanating from Arabic music. I started seeing films only after the passing away of my father, my very first film being ‘Diyare Habib’ (a Muslim plot film) at Zanzibar’s Majestic Cinema in 1956. My father’s death had meant certain liberty, also the Grundig radio found its place in our house and thenceforth my addiction to Indian music of that era. None of the various ‘aapki farmaish’ programs would be missed out despite my mother dissuading me from it. Some of Naushad’s numbers sounded strikingly similar to the mournful marsia that we recite in the month of Muharram, a clear manifestation of Naushad/Anis Lucknow heritage. Beny Ruben of 'Star & Style' in a feature on Naushad (in the 60's) had come up with some interesting revelations about him. On the occasion of Beju Bawra's 'Silver Jubilee' celebrations at Broadway Cinema on Dadar, Maestro Naushad's entry was greeted with applause by the onlookers.

  • Hindi Film Songs in the Post-Mtv Era: Analyzing the New Lyricism
International Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences (IJHSS) ISSN(P): 2319-393X; ISSN(E): 2319-3948 Vol. 4, Issue 2, Mar 2015, 13-20 © IASET HINDI FILM SONGS IN THE POST-MTV ERA: ANALYZING THE NEW LYRICISM MIHIR BHOLEY Associate Senior, Faculty National Institute of Design PG Campus, Gandhinagar, India ABSTRACT Songs, dance and melodrama are idiosyncratic to Hindi Cinema which has a formidable presence in South Asia. Over the years both Hindi cinema and songs have crossed their native boundary and become a global cultural product. In recent years aggressive marketing of Hindi cinema in Europe and America and their easy access through internet have earned Hindi songs new popularity in the western world too. However, there’s also a perceptible qualitative change in the lyrics over the last few decades. The lyrical, poetic, aesthetic and emotional type songs of yesteryears are being overshadowed by a large number of songs which sound trivial in comparison. This phenomenon may also be a concern of ethnomusicology. Principal objective of this paper is to examine the changes in the lyrical quality of Hindi film music in the post-MTV era through a comparative analysis of the songs over the decades and to explore the change in their lyrical and musical quality. KEYWORDS: Cinema, Ethnomusicology, Lyrics, Music, MTV, Natyasastra INTRODUCTION Summary It’ll be naïve to judge Indian popular cinema without songs. They’ reconsidered essential to the creative genre called cinema in India. Film songs or filmi geet in India are both the creator and product of popular culture. Considering creation of rasa (sentiment) and bhava (emotion) essential for natya (drama) in the classical Indian tradition, popular cinema, the modern avatar of natya banks heavily on songs to achieve that; albeit not entirely in conformity with the classical treaties of Natyasastra (composed circa 200 BCE and 200 CE) .
