IN THE late eighteenth century Alymer Allen acquired a brewery on this site that had previously been operated by Henry Rugge, and Allen subsequently converted the brewery to porter production. He acquired a large amount of property in the area including houses, sta- bles, cellars, plots of land and gardens. It was one of his bene ciaries, Edward Allen, who sold the property to William Beamish and William Crawford. This well established porter brewery was at this time situated to the south of Lambley’s Lane and along Cremer’s Lane/Cremer’s Square. The South Gate to the city, situated at the end of South Main Street and leading to the bridge over the south channel of the river, was still extant at this time. It incorporated a prison and was dismantled in the late-18th century. The medieval laneways ran west from South Main Street to the quay walls. The brewery was to expand rapidly over the coming years to be- come the largest brewery in Ireland by 1805.
