A BROADBAND MAGNETOTELLURIC STUDY IN THE NORTH ENGLAND HIGH HEAT FLOW REGION by Martin NOVAK Thesis presented for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy of the University of Edinburgh in the Faculty of Science. 1981 ABSTRACT The application of the magnetotelluric method to gecelectric exploration is described in this thesis, utilising the natural field variations in. the frequency band 1/1000 - 1000 Hz. These broadband measurements are made over a region in ndrth east England where above average heat flow values have been detected. The area, which is extensively mineralised, is- known to be. underlain by. a granite batholith (the Weardale granite) and has been the subject of many detailed studies, particularly with respect to these (related) features. In this thesis the geological and geophysical features of these studies are examined, the significance of conductivity measurements is reviewed, supported by a number of reference tables, and the theory of the niagnetotelluric method is outlined for the interested reader. The technical details of the audio-magnetoteJj.uric system - assembled for the first time in the U.K. - are presented, and its subsequent calibration and field trials described. From the system calibration, both the amplitude and phase' responses are used in the computer-based data analysis, to fully utilise the capabilities of the instrumentation and to produce, as far as possible, reliable station results. The introduction of a minicomputer to the acquisition and preliminary processing of data, mainly with respect to the conventional MT method, is described. I The single station data results from the seven broadband stations are presented followed by those from the twenty stations where only the AMT measurements exist. -

Violet Rosemary Strachan Hutton Dr Violet Rosemary Strachan Hutton passed away peacefully after a short illness at St Andrews Memorial Hospital on April 1st, 2004. Rosemary, as she preferred to be known, was born on October 22nd 1925 in Dundee where she attended Harris Academy for her primary and secondary education. In 1943 she entered St Andrews University in the Faculty of Science, graduating in 1948 with an Honours MA degree in Mathematics and Physics. In 1949 she took up an appointment with the British Jute Association in Dundee, but she resigned after a few years finding that the physics of textiles was not sufficiently challenging. Feeling an urge to travel, she moved to Africa in 1954 to take up a lectureship in Physics at the University of Ghana (then connected with The University of London). A lifelong attachment to the people of Africa, in particular furthering higher education in science, grew out of her auxiliary duties as Deputy Warden of Volta Hall. In addition to her main duties of delivering lecture courses to undergraduate students, she registered for a higher degree. Her thesis, ‘Earth Current Variations in the Equatorial Region’ was accepted for the award of a Ph.D. degree by London University in 1961. Thus began an impressive research career largely devoted to the investigation of how geophysical methods, and in particular electrical methods, could be applied to investigate the structure of the Earth's continental crust and upper mantle, with many of the studies being focussed on Scotland. In 1963 she moved from Ghana to Nigeria to take up an appointment as Senior Lecturer in Physics at Ahmadu Bello University in Zaria, and she was promoted to a Readership in 1965. -

Parallel Processing Methods Applied to Two and Three Dimensional Geo-electromagnetic Induction Modelling Kenneth J MacDonald A thesis submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy to the University of Edinburgh 1996 Abstract Two existing finite difference algorithms for solving the forward modelling prob- lem of geo electromagnetic induction have been recoded to take advantage of high performance massively parallel SIMD (single instruction multiple data) computer architectures. Poll's[48] solves the two scalar polarised fields in the two dimen- sional (2D) problem, and the other from Pu[51] solves for all three components of the magnetic field in three dimensional (3D) structures. Both models apply integral boundary conditions at the top and bottom of the grid to limit total mesh size. The 3D model introduces a thin sheet at the top of the model to describe near surface features. An efficient data parallel algorithm ensures the evaluation of the integrals maintains a high ratio of processor utilisation on the parallel hardware. Data parallel versions of the point Jacobian, Gauss-Seidel and successive overrelaxation iterative solvers have been developed. The latter two require two level black-white ordering, which to equalise the processor load bal- ance, has been implemented it both a horizontally banded and chequer boarded remapping of grid nodes. The 2D model was also developed to form a task farm, whereby the solution for each period is performed on one of a cluster of workstations. These solutions are independent of each other, so are executed simultaneously on however many workstations are available at the time. -

Alan George Jones C. ABSTRACT The Southern Uplands of Scotland: is at present a region of great interest to both geologists and geophysicists. The complex tectonic history associated with the closing of the proto-Atlantic ocean has yet to be determined. Previous geophysical studies have shown that the Southern Uplands is atypical of normal continent. Geomagnetic investi- gations have indicated a zone of anomalously high electrical conductivity underlying the Southern Uplands region at a depth of 12-30 km. In order to determine further the exact structure and spatial variation of this conductivity zone., two geomagnetic studies have been carried out in the region. A Geomagnetic Deep Sounding Array of 19 Gough-Reitzel variometers recorded the naturally varying Earth's magnetic field during December 1913 and January 1914. This was followed by • Magneto-Telluric observations on lines perpendicular and parallel to the strike of the supposed anomaly. • In this thesis, reviews of various regional MT studies, the geo- physical significance of conductivity measurements and the known geology and geophysics of the Southern Uplands region are given. The aims, and relevant theory, of induction studies are also presented. The observa-. • tional procedures for both the GDS and MT techniques, and the type and form of the MT activity, are described.
