Pirongia Historic Visitor Centre is now open four days a week - Sunday, Monday, Wednesday and Fridays from 10am-3pm. Te Whare Taonga O Ngaa Rohe O Arekahanara, which occupies the resited and restored old St Saviour’s Church building in central Pirongia, is manned by volunteers. Waipa Mayor Alan Livingston recently accept- ed a Certifi cate of Merit from the Historic Places Trust on behalf of Pirongia community. In awarding this certifi cate, the Trust wanted to recognise the enormous contribution made by Pirongia Residents and Ratepayers Association, which accepted the challenge of transporting the old Anglican Church back to Pirongia and restor- ing it to a stage where it could be handed over. “In most cases, removal of a historic building is considered detrimental to a place’s heritage val- ues, though in this case the building was actually brought back into the district after its removal 45 years ago,” Historic Places Trust lower northern area manager Gail Henry says. The Pirongia Historic Visitor Centre now owns the building and over the past two years has worked hard to make it an attractive place to visit. Displays on the history of the area have been carefully presented and guidance on what to see in and around Pirongia offered. With assistance from the Department of Con- servation, photos and maps on Mt Pirongia walks are now made available in the village again.
