Brookl~·n, December 7, 2001-Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) announces the January schedule of BAMcafe Live, the live performance series at BAMcafe (30 Lafayette Avenue), curated by Limor Tomer . BAMcafe Live presents an eclectic mix of jazz, rock, pop, and spoken word. Friday and Saturday night performances have no cover charge ($10 food/drink minimum) . In January, BAMcafe Live celebrates Martin Luther King Jr. Day with Music for Dr. King , two Saturday performances featuring new compositions by Brooklyn-based artists . Highlights . include a new work by performed by the Brooklyn Saxophone Quartet (January 19) and a duet featuring guitarist David Gilmore and poet Sadiq Bey (January 26) . Music for Dr. King is presented in conjunction with BAM·s annual The Brooklyn Tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King. Jr.--Come Share the Dream held on January 21 at the BAM Howard Gilman Opera House .

Other highlights include a performance by the emerging singer/songwriter Martha Wainwright (January 18) and a special CD release concert for Zero Church , the highly anticipated recording from legendary folk singers Suzzy and Maggie Roche (January 25) of the famed vocal group, The Roches .

A native of Montreal , Canada , singer and song,Hiter Martha Wainwright is the daughter of acclaimed folk legends Loudon Wainwright III and Kate McGarrigle . Not a newcomer to the music industry , Waimvright has performed and toure d with her famous family since early childhood. Currently based in , Waimnight regularly performs her unique mix of folk and rock with her o,rn band comprised of Tom Mennier (piano) and Lily Lanken (harmo ny vocals) at such Nev.' York venues as Tonic , Fez, Maxwell's , Bro,rnies , and Living Room . Martha Wainwright returns to BAM after performing onstage with her brother Rufus Wainwrigh t as part BAM ' s 2001 Next Wave Festival conc ert, The Next Wave of Song. For its Music for Dr. King engagement Brooklyn Saxophone Quartet will premi ere Prophet for Peace: Suire For Dr. Marrin Luther King. Jr.- a BAMcafo commission composed by Fred Ho. This ne,v composition features thr ee movements: "We Shall Overcome Blues· ', .. Lift Every Voice and Sing : Black National Anth em", and ··or. King , the Peaceful Warrior· ' (based on a song by Brooklyn ite Cal Massey) . With Fred Ho·s massive , baritone bottom-h eavy sax sound . Sam Fumac e·s searing alto sax sound , Chris Jonas· soprano leads, and David Bindman · s tenor impro visations , the Brooklyn Saxophone Quartet yields a variety of infinite sonic possibilities . Friday , January 25 at 9pm Suzzy and Maggie Roche CD Release Concert Since the late seventies Suzzy and Maggie Roche have garnered both critical and audience accolades as two-thirds of The Roches , a trio of singing sisters. For BAMca( e Live the folk duo ,,·ill perform tracks from Zero Church , a collection of sevent een non-d enominational prayers-a result of,,ork the Roche sisters began at Alma Dca,crc Smith· s Institute on the Arts & Civic Dialogue . The Institute focuses on artistic collaboration and discov ery,, hile exploring issues of race , identity. div ersity , and community For _this pro_1cct the Roch e sist ers collected both original and traditional prayers from a ,vide variety of p-:opk and set the spiritual and inspiring lyrics to music. Zero Church features guests vocalist s Terr-: and David Roch e. Dr. Ysaye Barnw ell (from S,veet Honey & The Rock) , Joel Bard. Ruben Martinez. and Francis Bok, among others . Saturday , January 26 at 9pm David Gilmore and Sadiq Bey Guitarist David Gilmore is one of the most sought-after guitarists on the jazz scene , ha ving recorded and collaborated on more than 40 albums . A major presence on the national and international music scene. Gilmore has toured extensiv ely throughout the United Stat es, Canada , Europe. South America , Japan , and Indone sia \Yith artists such as Cassandra Wilson , Christian McBrid e, Graham Ha~nes, Uri Cain e, and Don Byron . " For Music.for Dr. King, Gilmore performs \Yith Sadiq Bey , one of the most affecting and intense poets on the spoken word scene. As a performance poet Bey uses his voice like an instrument , weaving ,rnrds in and out of his musical collaborators ' accompaniment.

Upcoming highlights In February , BAMcaf e Live celebrates Black History Month with experimental musicians in a special Friday series featuring Black Rock Coalition (BRC) artists. The series starts on February 1 with '·Songs of Freedom " a night that \Yill include an all-star cast of BRC members performing songs that have served as soundtracks to the history of people of color such as "·Redemption Song ," "I'm Black and I'm Proud ," and '-Young , Gifted and Black. " Subsequent nights will include bands that represent the '·next generation· ' of the BRC along with guest hosts . The performances will take place on February 1, 8, and 22 and March 1, 2002 . On February 2 Latin jazz legend Bobby Sanabria brings his Afro-Cuban rhythms to BAMcafe. A separate release will follow shortly .
