Coming Out Of The Dark Gloria Estefan Emilio Estefan Jon Secada This is an inspirational song made popular by singer Gloria Estefan The chorus will sing the words in bold Verse 1 Why be afraid if I'm not alone? Though life is never easy The rest in unknown And up to now for me it's been Hands against stone Spent each and every moment Searching for what to believe Coming out of the dark I finally see the light now And it's shining on me Coming out of the dark I know the love that saved me You're sharing with me Verse 2 Starting again is part of the plan And I'll be so much stronger Holding your hand Step by step, I'll make it through I know I can I may not make it easier But I have felt you Near all the way Coming out of the dark I finally see the light now And it's shining on me I see the light, I see the light, I see the light Coming out of the dark I know the love that saved me You're sharing with me Forever, and ever stand on the rock Forever and ever ooh Forever, and ever stand on the rock of your love Coming out of the dark p.2 Of your love is all it takes No matter what we face Coming out of the dark Coming out of the dark I see the light I feel your love shining on me Shining, shining, shining Coming out of the dark I know the love that saved me You're sharing You're sharing with me I see the light, I see the light, I see the light Coming out of the dark Sharing with me Sharing with me Sharing with me I cannot be in the dark Make it into the light, yeah Your love's shining on me I see the light, I see the light, I see the light Coming out of the dark I see the light, I see the light, I see the light Shining, shining, shining Coming out of the dark (repeat) .

Chester from New England Triptych, by William Schuman Grades: 5 - 12 Music Concepts: form, style, harmony, melody, tone color National Standards: 6. Listen and describe music. 8. Relate music to other arts/disciplines (visual arts & history). 9. Relate music to history/culture (Revolutionary War) Materials: Recording of William Schuman New England Tryptic “Chester”, iconic pictures labeled Church Hymn, Spirit of ’76, Strife of War, and Remembrance displayed in random order. Strategy/Procedures 1. Have students point to or signal 1, 2, 3, 4 on a hand the pictures representing the current section of music playing, ready to pose a possible history for the tune “Chester” in the history of the Revolutionary War based on the order of musical events. Monitor for signals indicating the order listed under Materials above, and suggestions that the tune historically started as a hymn, was used as a fife-and-drum call to battle, became symbolic of the war effort, and was later adopted by the Continental Army as a marching tune. Reinforce answers that lean toward “correct” answers, withholding feedback and probing for deeper answers until student discussion leads close enough to affirm “correct” answers. 2. Learn to sing the song by memory by reading the music for "Chester" or echoing phrase by phrase after the teacher, then sing it along with the woodwind hymn at the beginning. Monitor for accurate reading and/or echoing of pitch, rhythm, and words. Reinforce best singing efforts until everybody can sing it accurately by memory. 3. Ask students to describe the musical effects provided by the Woodwinds, Piccolo, Brass, Snare Drum.

  • Snarky Puppy – Live at the Royal Albert Hall
Snarky Puppy – Live At The Royal Albert Hall (50:22 + 48:57, 2 CD, 3 LP, GroundUp Music, 2020) Erstaunlich, welche Acts abseits des allgemeinen Mainstreams mittlerweile die Royal Albert Hall füllen.

  • The Bad Ass Pulse by Martin Longley
December 2010 | No. 104 Your FREE Monthly Guide to the New York Jazz Scene aaj-ny.com The THE Bad Ass bad Pulse PLUS Mulgrew Miller • Microscopic Septet • Origin • Event Calendar Many people have spoken to us over the years about the methodology we use in putting someone on our cover. We at AllAboutJazz-New York consider that to be New York@Night prime real estate, if you excuse the expression, and use it for celebrating those 4 musicians who have that elusive combination of significance and longevity (our Interview: Mulgrew Miller Hall of Fame, if you will). We are proud of those who have graced our front page, lamented those legends who have since passed and occasionally even fêted 6 by Laurel Gross someone long deceased who deserved another moment in the spotlight. Artist Feature: Microscopic Septet But as our issue count grows and seminal players are fewer and fewer, we must expand our notion of significance. Part of that, not only in the jazz world, has by Ken Dryden 7 been controversy, those players or groups that make people question their strict On The Cover: The Bad Plus rules about what is or what is not whatever. Who better to foment that kind of 9 by Martin Longley discussion than this month’s On The Cover, The Bad Plus, only the third time in our history that we have featured a group. This tradition-upending trio is at Encore: Lest We Forget: Village Vanguard from the end of December into the first days of January. 10 Bill Smith Johnny Griffin Another band that has pushed the boundaries of jazz, first during the ‘80s but now with an acclaimed reunion, is the Microscopic Septet (Artist Feature).

  • Is This Jazz? Newport Jazz Festival '17: Where to Start
Is This Jazz? Newport Jazz Festival ’17: Where To Start On Friday, August 5, the world’s best jazz artists will once again make their yearly pilgrimage to Fort Adams for another exciting Newport Jazz Festival. Over the past few years, the festival has been stepping up the line-ups and has done an amazing job of balancing the old guard with the young lions, simultaneously showing how this music has gotten to where it is and where it’s headed next. The diversity of groups and sounds is no less prevalent this year, with what has to be one of the more stacked bills in recent history. While we may not be able to hit on every “must see” act in this feature, here is a glimpse into who to watch out for and the sets you’ll probably be running to. For the past few years, Snarky Puppy has been a relentless force in the international jazz scene. Formed in 2003 by composer/bassist Micheal League, this powerhouse ensemble has performed thousands of shows across six continents, and has collaborated with Lalah Hathaway, Laura Mvula, Salif Keïta, David Crosby, N’Dambi, Becca Stevens and Jacob Collier. Their intricately arranged and flawlessly executed charts are as stunning as the whirlwind improvisations traded off throughout the group. I can’t say this enough: Cécile McLorin Salvant is the best jazz vocalist working today and absolutely one of the all-time heavies. Her melodic phrasing and command of the depths of her voice are truly unmatched. Beyond her once-in-a-generation talent, her band is loaded with chops, giving this ensemble an edge in crafting unique interpretations of old favorites and outstanding originals and letting Salvant’s voice stretch and dance above the music swirling around her.

  • Pocahontas If I Never Knew You
Pocahontas if i never knew you Continue The romantic love song was originally developed for the prison scene where Pocahontas visits John Smith before he is to be sentenced for the alleged murder of Kokum, a trusted Powhatan warrior who asked to marry Pocahontas. The musical number, which was about 90% animated, was supposed to be a duet performed by the couple as they acknowledge their strong romantic love for each other. During test screenings with a children's audience their attention seemed to wander out of the film, Alan Menken, the songwriter for Disney's Pocahontas, offered to cut it because he also felt he had slowed the tempo of the film, with another song, Savages, about five minutes after that. Although cut out of the movie itself, if I never knew you still performed John Secada and Shanice at the end of the credits and released as a single. John Sekada and Shanis also sang the song in Spanish, and John Sekada also sang it in Brazilian Portuguese, not with Shanice, but with Daniela Mercury. In 2005, Disney released the tenth anniversary edition of Pocahontas, in which the song was fully animated and integrated into the film, but was an additional feature from which it was possible to opt out and watch the original theatrical version instead, due to seamless branching. It was performed by Mel Gibson (John Smith) and Judy Kuhn (Pocahontas) in the film's narration. It was recorded for the original film in 1995. This song shows the meaning, if both Pocahontas and John Smith had not met, they would never have fallen in love, and they would never have known each other without hatred and disgust on both sides; Native Americans and English settlers.

  • Michael Mayo
MICHAEL MAYO Whether Michael Mayo is performing with his band, as a guest, or alone with a looper pedal, the LA native’s commanding and other worldly vocalese is quickly gathering critical and commercial acclaim around the globe. Born to two successful musicians, Mayo grew up just a little more than 20 feet from the likes of Diana Ross, Luther Vandross, Earth Wind and Fire, and Stevie Wonder. This proximity helped Mayo create a musical path centered around elements of R&B, Soul and Jazz, forging his musical identity long before he hit the stage. Mayo attended the acclaimed Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz Performance, only the third vocalist to be accepted into the 20-year-old program, where he learned from the likes of Wayne Shorter and Herbie Hancock. Now living in Brooklyn, and still in his 20s, Mayo is a veteran international performer whose highlights include singing at the White House, the Kennedy Center and Renée Fleming’s American Voices Festival, as well as the Panama Jazz Festival. Most recently he has recorded and performed with Herbie Hancock, Jacob Collier, Kneebody, Gretchen Parlato, Josh Groban, Ben Wendel, and Becca Stevens among many others. His own band performance was a standout at the 2019 Playboy Jazz Festival, Atlanta Jazz Festival, and Monterey Jazz Festival. Signed to Mack Avenue/Artistry Records, Mayo’s debut record BONES, produced by Grammy Award-winning producer Eli Wolf (Norah Jones, Al Green, The Roots) was released on June 4th, 2021. BONES Born and raised in L.A., but a diehard New Yorker for the past five years (drawn by “the music, art and energy, its motivating factor”), 28-year-old Michael Mayo finished work on his debut solo album Bones, on the Artistry Music/Mack Avenue Music Group, just before COVID hit.

Three years later, a serendipitous of relentless touring and recording in all intersection with the gospel and R&B but complete obscurity, the Texas-bred/ community in Dallas transformed the New York-based quasi-collective suddenly music into something funkier, more direct, found itself held up by the press and and more visceral.
