VIETNAM VETERANS OF AMERICA Office of the National Chaplain Taps January/February 2015 ERIC C. ADAMS - Died Friday, September 26, 2014 at Duke Raleigh Hospital in Raleigh, North Carolina at the age of 67. He was a resident of Raleigh and formerly of Jay, New York. The cause of death is unknown. He was born to the late Ralph and Alice (née McDonald) Adams of Jay, New York on September 10, 1947. He received his early education in a two-room school house in Jay and graduated in 1965 from AuSable Forks High School, Au Sable Forks, NY. Upon graduating Eric volunteered to serve his country in the United States Army. He was first trained as a Construction Engineer at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, then at Fort Riley, Kansas trained in carpentry. He served the next 13 months in Vietnam. Upon his return from Vietnam he married Elaine Furnia, his high school sweetheart, on July 29, 1967. He was a retired maintenance mechanic with Cornell University. Eric was an active member of Northside Community Church in Knightdale, NC and until his health declined assumed many roles as usher, greeter, janitor and painter. He was always willing to help wherever he was needed. He was an At-Large Member of Vietnam Veterans of America – North Carolina. Eric leaves behind his mother Alice Adams of Plattsburg; wife, Elaine; daughters: Carrie (Jay) of Lake Royale, Jaime (Scott) Rose of Wendell and son Eric (Tami) of Gatlinburg, TN; grandchildren: Breanna and Garrett Bassett, Karl Golden, Brennen and Liam Rose; brother, Ralph Adams of Jay, NY; sister, Madeline (Gary) Senecal of Peru, NY. -

VIETNAM VETERANS OF AMERICA Office of the National Chaplain Taps November/December 2011 JOSEPH ARTHUR ALLEN - Died Friday, September 30, 2011 in Harrison, Tennessee at the age of 61. The cause of death is unknown. He was born in Chattanooga, Tennessee of Irene Staley, of Chattanooga and the late J. B. Allen. A lifelong resident of the Chattanooga area, he was a member of the Bayside Baptist Church and retired in January 2010 as an Engineer with Southern Railroad with 36 years of service. He was a graduate of Tyner High School, Class of 68, and was a veteran of the United States Army, serving in the Vietnam War. He was a member of Vietnam Veterans of America – Chattanooga Chapter #203. In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his brother, Donnie Allen. In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Janet L. Allen; two daughters, Sheri and husband Thomas Patrick, Charlotte, North Carolina and Anna and husband Donald Linam, Ooltewah, Tennessee; son, Dustin Whitley, Chattanooga; five grandchildren, Ingrid Patrick, Mac Patrick, Josie Linam, Jake Linam and Jenna Linam; two sisters, Brenda Burns, Ooltewah and Judy McDaniel, Chattanooga. Graveside funeral services were held at 10:30 AM Tuesday in the Chattanooga National Cemetery with the Rev. Bob Stitts, officiating. The family received friends from 2-4 PM Sunday at the Valley View Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home, Crematory & Florist, 7414 Old Lee Highway. ANTHONY AVERELLA - Died Saturday, July 16, 2011 of ALS at Baltimore Washington Medical Center in Glen Burnie, Maryland at the age of 56. -

A Salute to Louisiana Veterans November 1-3, 2018 Louisiana State University Hall of Honor Inductees A Salute to Louisiana Veterans ✩ Christopher W. Barnett First Lieutenant, U.S. Army The late Christopher Barnett earned a bachelor’s degree in Information Systems and Decision Sciences from LSU in May 2001. In 2003, he was commissioned through Officer Candidate School (OCS) as an Armor/Cavalry Second Lieutenant. Barnett enlisted as an Armor Crewman in 1990, serving in F CO/40, Berlin Brigade; 3/68th Armor, 4th Infantry Division, Ft. Carson, Colorado; and 2nd Infantry Division, Korea. He transferred to the Louisiana Army National Guard in 1997 with service as Tank Commander, Section Leader, and Platoon Sergeant in A Troop, 108th Cavalry, 256th Infantry Brigade (M). Upon commissioning, he was assigned as a Cavalry Platoon Leader. In 2004, Barnett was mobilized in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) in March and deployed to Kuwait in September, with follow-on to Multi-National Division Baghdad (MND-B) in October. He was selected as the Battalion Scout Platoon Leader, Task Force 1-156 (TF Geronimo) in November and personally commended by the Commander, MND-B & 1st Cavalry Division for the actions of his platoon in a critical engagement with insurgent forces in the Euphrates River Valley in December 2004. Barnett was killed in action on December 23, 2004, and posthumously promoted to First Lieutenant on December 25, 2004. Barnett’s honors and awards include the Draper (Armor) Leadership Award, Bronze Star, Purple Heart, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Iraqi Campaign Medal with Campaign Star, National Defense Service Medal, Army of Occupation Medal, and Combat Action Badge. -

With four Tangipahoa Parish Sheriffs in his lineage, he learned the importance of public service at an early age. Edwards graduated in 1988 from the United States Military Academy at West Point. The governor served eight years as an Airborne Ranger on active duty with the United States Army and commanded a rifle company in the 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. He served in Hawaii with the 25th Infantry Division from 1989 to 1992 at Schofield Barracks and was part of the 4th Battalion, 27th Infantry Regiment (Wolfhounds). He also served as Aide de Camp to the Assistant Division Commander. He graduated Order of the Coif from Louisiana State University Law Center in 1999 and set up a civil law practice in his home town of Amite. In 2007, Edwards was elected to the Louisiana House of Representatives from District 72, where he served for eight years until the voters of Louisiana elected him governor in November 2015. On January 11, 2016, Governor John Bel Edwards took the oath of office and asked the people of Louisiana to join him on an important mission of putting “Louisiana First.” Standing on the steps of the State Capitol, the governor shared his vision of a better Louisiana and his firm belief that the state’s brightest days are ahead.
