The set design for the 88th annual production, For the Record, called for a massive 11-foot-diameter rotating globe suspended above the stage and wrapped in the masthead of the show’s fictional newspaper, the Chicago Offering. Northwestern’s set, scenery, and paint shops are located in the Virginia Wadsworth Wirtz Center for the Performing Arts, but Waa-Mu is performed in Cahn Auditorium. How to pull off such a planetary transplant? By deflating Earth. The globe began as a plain white (albeit custom-built) inflatable balloon, but after its initial multisection muslin wrap was created (to determine shrinkage), it was deflated, rigged, reinflated, motorized, map-designed, taped for a paint mask, primed, painted, and unpeeled to reveal computer-generated, to-scale continents. -

This includes 37 World Festival Premieres. • The slate of in-competition projects represents the NYTVF's most diverse on record, with 56% of all selected pilots featuring persons of color above the line, and 44% with a person of color on the core creative team (creator, writer, director); • 71% of these pilots include a woman in a core creative role - including 50% with a female creator and 38% with a female director (up from 25% in 2016, and the largest number in the Festival’s history); • Nearly a third of selected projects (31%) hail from outside New York or Los Angeles, with international entries from the U.K., Canada, South Africa, and Israel; • Additionally, slightly less than half (46%) of these projects enter competition with no representation. -

An Historical Perspective of the Winery Mailing List
If you drink no Noir, you Pinot Noir Volume 11, Issue 43 May 4, 2019 An Historical Perspective of the Winery Mailing List In the last issue of the PinotFile, I was writing about the history of Williams Selyem Winery and stated, “The winery quickly achieved cult status and Ed (Selyem) found it challenging to allocate the wines. He created a mailing list, the first of its kind for domestic wineries, and the winery sold 85% of their wine directly to consumers on the list. An astute reader challenged me on this statement, informing me that Stony Hill Vineyard was, in fact, the first domestic (or at least California) winery to offer a mailing list exclusive to its customer base. This lead me to investigate the historical origins of California mailing lists. I found a number of historical inaccuracies in my research. An article published online, ‘Complete Napa Valley California Wine History from Early 1800s to Today’ at www.winecellarinsider.com, stated that “The first California wine to be sold vis mailing lists was Grace Family in 1978.” Lettie Teague, writing in www.foodandwine.com March 31 2015, said, “The mailing list phenomenon began some ten years ago with small-production wineries, mostly California, that are (mostly) selling cult Cabernets.” My research, aimed at setting the record straight, confirmed that Stony Hill Vineyard was the first California winery to offer a mailing list, dating to the early 1950s. Stony Hill Vineyard Fred McCrea (1896-1977) and his wife Eleanor (1908-1991) were looking for land on which to build a summer house in 1943. -

The thesis compares Jewish and non-Jewish masculinities in American Television sitcom characters in shows airing from the 1990's to the present: Seinfeld, Friends, and The Big Bang Theory. The thesis asks whether there is a difference between the representation of Jews and non-Jews in sitcoms, a genre where most men are mocked for problematic masculinity. The main goal of the thesis is to find out whether old stereotypes regarding Jewish masculinity – the "jew" as weak, diseased, perverted and effeminate – still exist, and how the depiction of Jewish characters relates to the Jews' assimilation and acceptance in America. -
