On Christmas Day, as King Charles of France knelt in prayer before the altar of the church of St. Peter's in Rome, Pope Leo III suddenly placed a golden crown on his head. The Roman people shouted three times, "To Charles Augustus, crowned by God, the great and pacific emperor of the Romans, life and victory!" Charles was reverenced by the pope and called Emperor and Augustus, after the manner of the leaders of ancient Rome.2.Learning to readPeter of Pisa, from 776-790 instructed Charlemagne in Latin.“To have another language is to possess a second soul.” 3.Educating all classesPaulenus of Aquileia, from 776-787 was at the Carolingian court. Charlemagne nominated him as patriarch of Aquileia in 787.The Lombard, Paul the Deacon was at the court from 782-787 and then Charlemagne nominated him as the abbot of Montecassino.Theodulf of Orleans, also known as the Spanish Goth, spent time at the court from 782-796 and then was nominated as bishop of Orleans.Alcuin of York from Northumbria, England, was a monk and deacon who served as head of the palace school at Charlemagne's court from 782-796. After this Alcuin continued his scholarly work as the abbot of St. Martin's Monastery in Tours. Was responsible for the writing of textbooks, the creation of word lists and the establishment of the trivium and quadrivium as the basis for education.4.Trial by panelTrial by ordeal:Peasant accused of a crime, to prove innocence, had to hold a red hot metal poker until hand was deeply burned. If burnt hand healed in three days, which it was unlikely to do, found innocent. If it did not, found guilty.A noble could prove innocence in ordeal by fight- hire someone to fight for them. If the person hired lived, they were found innocent. If the person hired died, they were found guilty, but had paid your punishment - paid with "your" life, so to speak, or at least the life of the person that had been hired - thus, you were free to go. vs. Trial by Panel: Under Charlemagne's system, each accused person would be heard by a panel of honorable men, men who had taken an oath to listen and to judge fairly based on the evidence presented. There was still corruption, but this system had a much better chance of being fair than did the old one. Our modern jury system, trial by jury, slowly developed from this early start.5.Illuminated manuscriptCarolingian monks used the oversized and heavily decorated initials of the insular art of Britain and Ireland and added their own touches and historiated the initial to further development. They produced luxury manuscripts that had leather bindings with jewels set in gold and covers of carved ivory panels. The major educational workshop centers that produced illustrated manuscripts were:The Court School of Charlemagne which produced the earliest manuscripts with ten total manuscripts being recognized from this school. They were ornate and ostentatious and reminiscent of the 6th century ivories and mosaicss from Ravenna, Italy. This went along with Charlemagne's revival of Roman classicism. The school of the Archbishop Ebo of Rheims was another important workshop. He assembled artists at his school and transformed Carolingian art into something new. His Gospel Book of Ebo (816-835) was painted with swift, fresh, vibrant brush strokes that represented the classical Mediterranean forms. He also published Bern Physiologus, the earliest Latin edition of the Christian allegorical text on animals.Monastery of St. Martin of Tours produced large bibles that were illustrated in the Late Antique style. The diocese of Metz (850-855) was another center of Carolingian art. A sacramenery was made for Bishop Drago illuminated "historiated" decorated initials that eventually influenced the Romanesque period with the harmonious union of classical lettering and figural scenes.6.Charlemagne becoming sole king of Franks Charlemagne and his younger brother, Carloman shared their father’s kingdom from 768 to 771. They didn’t get along and communicated through their mother, Bertrada of Laon. In 771, Carloman ended up dead and Charlemagne became sole heir. Charlemagne perhaps had something to do with his brother’s death.
