STORYBOOKS:

Mark 9:2-9 Miss Smith’s Incredible Storybook by Michael Garland (Written for ages 3-5 )

Comment: In Miss Smith’s Incredible Storybook, Zack thinks school, and especially reading, are boring. But he begins to change his mind because whenever his teacher, Miss Smith, reads out of her special book, the characters leap from the pages and come to life! When she finishes their story, the characters return to their book. One day, when Miss Smith is running late, the principal tries to read her storybook, and the characters overrun the school. Fortunately, Miss Smith arrives and is able to corral them back into the book once more. But Zack comes to love reading from this strange experience. Similarly, the disciples who follow Jesus up the mountain know about Moses and Elijah from their traditions and teachings, but when Jesus is transfigured, those people they’ve only heard about are suddenly there, in front of them! Much like Miss Smith’s storybook characters, whose stories eventually had to end and return to their book, this experience on the mountaintop cannot last forever. But Jesus’ disciples are changed by the amazing change they’ve witnessed, the ancestors they’ve seen, and the experience on the mountaintop. MUSIC:

ACTIVITIES:

MOUNTAIN WALKING: If there are hills, steps, bleachers or ramps, etc for children to walk up and down on, let children have a "timed event" for walking the "mountains". They'll enjoy seeing what their TIME was for the Mountain obstacles!

UPSIDE DOWN HEARTS: Let children cut out various sizes of hearts and glue onto a piece of construction paper UPSIDE DOWN so the top will be the mountain. On the upside-down hearts, children can write LOVES US AND RENEWS OUR STRENGTH!

WALKING WITH JESUS: Let the children draw large mountains on a poster (or on a piece of construction paper). Tell children to write in VERY SMALL letters, "Walking with Jesus" up and down the edges of the mountain as many times as they can within three minutes. After the time is up, the children may color the mountains and see how many times they were able to write the words!

MOUNTAIN BUILDING: Give the children wooden blocks or various plastic containers to build the highest mountain they can without the containers or blocks falling. Talk to children about the mountains and valleys of our lives and God renewing our strength.

MOUNTAIN THUMB PRINTS: Have the children draw some mountains on a piece of paper and then use their finger or thumb INK print to represent Elijah and Moses on the mountain. The children could also make thumb print figures for John, Peter and James, as well!

MOUNTAIN ART: Each child can be given a large Mountain picture (triangle construction paper), a big yellow sun and 4 toothpicks. The Mt picture and the sun can be glued or taped onto a piece of poster board. The 4 toothpicks could be taped onto the Mountain and children can draw a head on each toothpick and draw to make them look like the men in our story (Jesus with Peter, James and John). An ink thumbprint would make a cute face for each man. Glitter could be sprinkled around the stick figure that will represent Jesus, as well as a small white cloth on the "Jesus" toothpick! Children will have fun making legs and feet and arms to their toothpick. Tape a typed or written out Bible verse on the bottom of their art.

"GOD SAID IT" GAME: Have children sit in a circle and an adult can name something in the Bible that GOD SAYS. Children will then say, GOD SAID IT AND THAT SETTLES IT! Then the adult can say something that God "hasn't" said and the children can say GOD DIDN'T SAY THAT!! If a child says the wrong statement, take time for the class to discuss what GOD says or didn't say.

BALL BOUNCING: Children can be placed in a circle or lines across from each other. Each child will BOUNCE the ball one time to another child and say ONE WORD of the key Bible verse and the next child will bounce the ball one time as well, and will say the next word of the Bible verse, until the entire verse has been recited. Continue to play as time allows.

COTTON CLOUDS: Children can be given some bright blue paper and markers and cotton. They can draw big clouds and write THIS IS MY SON WHOM I LOVE. Glue cotton around the edges of the cloud.
