By CHARLES McGRATH There used to be just two Stephen Colberts, and they were hard enough to distinguish. The main difference was that one thought the other was an idiot. The idiot Colbert was the one who made a nice paycheck by appearing four times a week on “The Colbert Report” (pronounced in the French fashion, with both t’s silent), the extremely popular fake news show on Comedy Central. The other Colbert, the non-idiot, was the 47-year-old South Carolinian, a practicing Catholic, who lives with his wife and three children in suburban Montclair, N.J., where, according to one of his neighbors, he is “extremely normal.” One of the pleasures of attending a live taping of “The Colbert Report” is watching this Colbert transform himself into a Republican superhero. Suburban Colbert comes out dressed in the other Colbert’s guise — dark two-button suit, tasteful Brooks Brothersy tie, rimless Rumsfeldian glasses — and answers questions from the audience for a few minutes. (The questions are usually about things like Colbert’s favorite sport or favorite character from “The Lord of the Rings,” but on one memorable occasion a young black boy asked him, “Are you my father?” Colbert hesitated a moment and then said, “Kareem?”) Then he steps onstage, gets a last dab of makeup while someone sprays his hair into an unmussable Romney-like helmet, and turns himself into his alter ego.

Brehm NARW 9.28.18 Hello NARWers, Thank you so much for reading the introduction and appendix/methodology section of my manuscript. Some background: I am transitioning my work from a dissertation into a book for Fordham University Press. The revised manuscript is due to the press January 31, 2019 (a timeline of events is attached). My reviewers main concern was that the introduction was too dissertation-y (not a surprise as it was a dissertation). So I have done my best to simplify the introduction, remove extraneous footnotes, and refocus sections. I have amped up (slightly) the Catholic component and toned down the humor & religion angle. I have reorganized the entire introduction and separated out the methodology section to an appendix. My questions for you: how is the new intro? Where can I punch it up and where is it confusing? I also have no idea how to start a book. What should the introductory sentences look like? Should I start with a story? What story? Should I begin with an introduction to Colbert himself or dive into my argument? Should I use another distinction between actor and character other than Colbert and COLBERT? More logistical questions: will the book suffer if I don’t have many photos? How should I go about obtaining rights to images I’ve screenshot? What should the cover be? I’m considering commissioning a friend to create a stained glass image of Colbert with ashes on his forehead in front of The Colbert Report stained glass. What covers have been evocative for you? Do you know other people I should be consulting about this? Thank you for your advice and guidance as I revise this manuscript.

Prime Time Animation Television animation and American culture Edited by Carol A. Stabile and Mark Harrison PRIME TIME ANIMATION In September 1960 a television show emerged from the mists of prehistoric time to take its place as the mother of all animated sitcoms. The Flintstones spawned dozens of imitations, just as, two decades later, The Simpsons sparked a renaissance of prime time animation. The essays in this volume critically survey the landscape of television animation, from Bedrock to Springfield and beyond. The contributors explore a series of key issues and questions, including: How do we explain the animation explosion of the 1960s? Why did it take nearly twenty years following the cancellation of The Flintstones for animation to find its feet again as prime time fare? In addressing these questions, as well as many others, the essays in the first section examine the relation between earlier, made-for-cinema animated production (such as the Warner Looney Toons shorts) and television-based animation; the role of animation in the economies of broadcast and cable television; and the links between animation production and brand image. Contributors also examine specific programs like The Powerpuff Girls, Daria, The Simpsons, The Ren and Stimpy Show and South Park from the perspective of fans, exploring fan cybercommunities, investi- gating how ideas of ‘class’ and ‘taste’ apply to recent TV animation, and addressing themes such as irony, alienation, and representations of the family. Carol A. Stabile is associate professor of communication and director of the Women’s Studies Program at the University of Pittsburgh. She is the author of Feminism and the Technological Fix (1994), editor of Turning the Century: Essays in Media and Cultural Studies (2000), and is currently working on a book on media coverage of crime from the 1830s to the present.
