Falk, Franz Bairlein & Bernd Leisler Received 21 December 2001 Despite reviews by Elgood et al. (1973) for Nigeria and Curry-Lindahl (1981) for Africa, knowledge of intra- African migration systems remains poor. The Gambaga Flycatcher Muscicapa gambagae is thought to be migratory (Urban et al. 1997). It has a disjunct distribution from Mali and Ivory Coast in the west to Somalia and south-west Arabia in the east, and Zaire and Kenya in the south (Urban et al. 1997). In West Africa it is claimed to be resident in Liberia, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Togo and Nigeria (Dowsett & Forbes-Watson 1993), a non-breeding migrant in Mali from August to December, presumably breeding further south in March and April (Urban et al. 1997) and moving northwards with the rains (Lamarche 1981). It has been recorded as a vagrant in Burkina Faso (Holyoak & Seddon 1989) and was recently recorded from Guinea (Nikolaus 2000). Borrow & Demey (2001) described its status as a rare to scarce resident and partial migrant in the above-mentioned countries. In East Africa it is also thought to be a partial migrant based on the mist-netting of 3 juveniles at night at Ngulia, Kenya, presumably on migration, and on the fact that all East African records south of 7°N are from November to April (Urban et al. 1997). Biodiversity Data Journal 7: e34754. https://doi.org/10.3897/BDJ.7.e34754 Abstract Sierra Leone is situated at the western edge of the Upper Guinean Forests in West Africa, a recognised biodiversity hotspot which is increasingly threatened by habitat degradation and loss through anthropogenic impacts. The small mammal fauna of Sierra Leone is poorly documented, although bats and rodents account for the majority of mammalian diversity. Based on morphological, genetic and echolocation data, we recorded 30 bat (Chiroptera), three shrew (Soricomorpha) and eleven rodent (Rodentia) species at the Seli River in the north of the country in 2014 and 2016, during a baseline study for the Bumbuna Phase II hydroelectric project. In 2016, 15 bat species were additionally documented at the western fringe of the Loma Mountains, a recently established national park and biodiversity offset for the Bumbuna Phase I dam. Three bat species were recorded for the first time in Sierra Leone, raising the total number for the country to 61. -

Cameroon April/May 2016 CAMEROON A report on birds observed on a trip to Cameroon 16 April – 06 May 2016 By Henk Hendriks Nyasoso village with Mount Kupe, looming in the distance Mount Cameroon Speirops Zosterops melanocephalus - Mount Cameroon 1 Cameroon April/May 2016 INTRODUCTION In October 2015 Hans Westerlaken told me that he had contacted a local guide in Cameroon who was able to organise a complete birding trip to this country for a reasonable price. He was trying to get a team of 4 birders together to undertake this trip. Knowing that Cameroon is probably the number 1 birding destination in Western Africa and having wanted to visit this country already for many years I was immediately interested. So when my brother Frans and Jan Hein van Steenis decided to join us, we had a nice team together and we could start to actually prepare ourselves for this trip. Unfortunately, because of the presence of Boko Haram in the extreme north of the country, we were unable to visit this area and had to skip for instance Waza N.P. Many of the big tour companies did not visit/ bird Cameroon in 2016 mainly because of the unrest in the Northern part of the country. Having said so, we never felt unsafe during our trip, not when we visited Ngaoundaba Ranch, Benoue N.P. and the Poli area in the north of the country either. So in the end we agreed on a 3-week itinerary which would give us the opportunity to observe most of the endemics, near-endemics and other specialties of Cameroon. -

Haresi December 2010 THE BIRDS OF THE HIGHLANDS OF SOUTH-WEST SAUDI ARABIA AND ADJACENT PARTS OF THE TIHAMA: JULY 2010 (ABBA SURVEY 42) by Michael C. Jennings1, Amar R. H. Al-Momen2 and Jabr S. Y. Haresi2 December 2010 SUMMARY The objective of the survey was to compare habitats and bird life in the Asir region, particularly Jebal Souda and the Raydah escarpment protected area of the Saudi Wildlife Commission, and adjacent regions of the tihama, with those observed in July 1987 (Jennings, et al., 1988). The two surveys were approximately the same length and equal amounts of time were spent in the highlands and on the tihama. A number of walked censuses were carried out during 2010 on Jebal Souda, using the same methodology as walked censuses in 1987, and the results are compared. Broadly speaking the comparison of censuses revealed that in 2010 there were less birds and reduced diversity on the Jebal Souda plateau, compared to 1987. However in the Raydah reserve the estimates of breeding bird populations compiled in the mid 1990s was little changed as far as could be assessed in 2010. The highland region of south-west Saudi Arabia, especially Jebal Souda, has been much developed since the 1987 survey and is now an important internal recreation and resort area. This has lead to a reduction in the region’s importance for terraced agriculture. -

A detection function was estimated individually for each land use types by pooling all the animal data from the transects. The dainty Sierra Leone Prinia was voted as Bird of the Trip (Mark Van Beirs) SIERRA LEONE 15 – 29 JANUARY 2019 LEADER: MARK VAN BEIRS 1 BirdQuest Tour Report: Sierra Leone www.birdquest-tours.com The delicate Sierra Leone Prina, the exquisite Gola Malimbe, the rarely-seen Turati’s Boubou, the very smart Emerald Starling, the jewel-like Crimson Seedcracker and the extraordinary White-necked Rockfowl (or Yellow-headed Picathartes) were without a doubt the most favoured birds of our January 2019 Sierra Leone tour. Searching for Upper Guinea Forest endemics in this much maligned country is more difficult than in Ghana, due to the much less developed roads and tourist infrastructure. Most of the highly desired species require some hard work, but a number of these endemics can only be seen in Sierra Leone. The country is one of the poorest countries in the world, and is in the West mainly known through the brutal civil war of the nineteen nineties, the frightening Ebola crisis of 2014-2016 and its infamous blood diamonds. But Sierra Leone has several beautiful, well-preserved National Parks and protected areas and our local outfitter took very good care of us. We had a terrific time birding the diverse habitats of this little-known country and some of the other highlights of our tour included Hartlaub’s Duck, Blue Quail, White-backed Night Heron, Red- thighed Sparrowhawk, Red-necked Buzzard, African Finfoot, Forbes’s Plover, Great Snipe, Blue-headed Wood Dove, Great Blue, Guinea and Yellow-billed Turacos, Olive Long-tailed Cuckoo, Brown Nightjar,
