A mountainous island of ancient trees and a volcanic island brimming with life nurtured by the heat of the earth and the crash of the waves Yakushima The two main islands that make up Yakushima National Park, Yakushima Island and Kuchinoerabu Island, rise from 21 a sea rich with life and warmed by the Kuroshio Current. Despite being separated by only 12 kilometers, the two National Park islands have completely different origins and natural landscapes. Yakushima, home to Kyushu’s highest peaks reaching beyond 1,800 meters above sea level, boasts steep terrain and diverse vertically distributed vegetation that flourishes in climates ranging from subtropical to cool-temperate. The mountains, divided into Mae-dake (“front-facing mountains”) and Oku-dake (“inner mountains”), have historically been the location of take-mairi pilgrimages made by those who practice mountain worship. Enormous cedars of over 1,000 years of age grow in the natural forest that covers the island, a portion of which is a registered UNESCO World Heritage Site. Yakushima is also home to endemic subspecies including Cervus nippon yakushimae（yakushika deer） and yakushima macaques, and is also a principal spawning ground for the endangered loggerhead sea turtle. On nearby Kuchinoerabu, the largest volcanic island of the Satsunan Islands, volcanic activity continues. The eastern side of the island is comprised of an extensive dynamic volcanic landscape not seen on Yakushima, while the island’s coast boasts cliffs and sea caves carved by violent waves. Despite being a volcanic island, however, Kuchinoerabu is covered in dense vegetation, leading to its nickname, midori-no-kazan-tou (“green volcanic island”). Rare flora and fauna different from varieties found on Yakushima, includingtakatsuru orchids and the Pteropus dasymallus dasymallus(northern Ryukyu fruit bat), thrive on the island. ■Access
