Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay opened in 2002 and is one of the busiest performance centres in Asia. It includes a theatre with a seating capacity of 2,000 and a concert hall that seats about 1,600.

In 2013 the client decided to replace the automated fly system, paying particular attention to the control system, user friendliness, reliability and easy maintenance. After an extensive evaluation with four other pre- qualified companies, Waagner-Biro was awarded the contract.

In 2014, within only five months on site, Waagner-Biro changed more than 100 upper stage machinery hoists, installed a new CAT control sys- tem and integrated existing equipment into the new control system. The big challenge was to carefully plan and coordinate the on-site work, star- ting with the removal of old equipment and kilometres of cables.

The new system has a number of distinct advantages. It is more user- friendly with sophisticated software that makes it easier to program even the most complicated performances. It is more efficient and is able to carry heavier loads. The new system is also more flexible and costs less to service and maintain. The theatre was handed back over on time, to the fullest satisfaction of the client.

AT A GLANCE •• More than 100 upper stage machinery hoists installed, existing under machinery drives integrated in CAT control system within only five months on site including the dismantling of the existing bulky heavy weight hoists 8 | Stage Systems Stage Systems | 9 ZORLU PERFORMING ARTS CENTRE ISTANBUL, TURKEY

Waagner-Biro Stage Systems entered the Turkish market at the end of 2011 with the assignment of the contract for the stage machinery at the Zorlu Performing Arts Centre in Istanbul.

The Zorlu Performing Arts Centre includes two theatres, a five-star hotel, a shopping centre and a green area. The total investment for this project was more than US$ 800 million. With an area of approximately 50,000 square metres, the main hall of the Performing Arts Centre offers a music theatre that is able to stage the latest Broadway or West End performan- ces for an audience of 2,370 people.

It has two balconies, and was reinforced specifically for optimal acou- stics. The smaller hall with a capacity of 770 seats and a balcony is mainly used for drama theatre.

Waagner-Biro supplied the stage machinery for the two theatres together with a local partner.

10 | Stage Systems Stage Systems | 11 STATE THEATRE DARMSTADT,

In the context of designs by architects Lederer + Ragnarsdóttir + Oei, Waagner-Biro undertook a complete renovation of the entire stage equip- ment for the Darmstadt State Theatre. This cultural centre houses three stages: The ‚Large House‘ with 960 seats, which mainly stages opera; the ‚Small House‘, with 480 seats which stages theatre and dance performan- ces; and the Studio Theatre, which has 120 seats.

The upper stage and lower stage equipment, as well as a CAT computer control system, were installed by Waagner-Biro during the renovation work. Part of the job included installing shaft hoists which, by including an integrated laser measuring system, gave greater ease of use and flexibi- lity. In the lower stage, five two-level platforms were installed, which were equipped with equipment trap doors and additional trap doors for the actors.

AT A GLANCE •• More than 100 hoists in the upper stage machinery •• 6 double deck stage elevators à 16 x 2.5m; 0,5 m/s; 10 tons dynamic load per platform •• 4 stage waggons and a revolving waggon with 16 x 15m 12 | Stage Systems Stage Systems | 13 OPERA HOUSES

14 | Stage Systems Stage Systems | 15 MUSICTHEATRE LINZ, AUSTRIA

The revolving stage in the Music Theatre in Linz measures 32 metres in diameter. This makes it one of the largest in the world and the centrepie- ce of the newly built cultural monument. Three double-deck main stage lifts with inclinable secondary decks and a smaller revolving stage for performance purposes are integrated into the overall steel construction.

In addition to the revolving stage, three 15 x 4 metre doubledeck plat- forms and an additional revolving stage with a diameter of 15 metres were installed in the lower stage. The doubledeck platforms enable the automatic creation of steps for use in dramatic scenes or choral concerts. Built-in flaps allow for appearances and scenery changes to be performed with the help of steps or trap doors.

The upper stage machinery includes forty-three 500 kg hoists and eight 1,000 kg hoists. The entire project, conceived by architect Terry Pawson was, and is, very ambitious. The concept behind the stage equipment ma- kes it possible for multiple scenes to be built simultaneously on the main stage – as well as facilitating quick and effective scene changes.

AT A GLANCE •• Transport revolving stage: Ø 32 m; 4 trap doors; operating weight 502 tons (equals to 4 A380 airplanes), play revolving stage Ø 15 m and three double deck platforms à 15 x 4 m •• More than 80 hoists in the upper stage machinery 16 | Stage Systems Stage Systems | 17 OPERA PODLASKA BIALYSTOK, POLAND

In 2009, Waagner-Biro won – in cooperation with its Polish partners un- der the leadership of LTT – a contract to supply the stage equipment for the Podlaska Opera House. The newly built opera house is one element of a plan to establish Bialystok as the commercial, intellectual and cultu- ral hub of the region. The opera house plays an important role in this plan and is intended to become a point where Western and Eastern culture fuse.

These ambitions are reflected in the stage equipment designed by Waag- ner-Biro. The company was responsible for the entire lower stage machi- nery, which consists of four two-level elevating platforms, orchestra plat- forms, a bridge-trolley and a turntable trolley.

In addition, we supplied numerous winches for the upper stage machine- ry and a CAT computer control system, and thus made an important contribution to achieving the project’s aim of creating an impressive cul- tural centre.

20 | Stage Systems Stage Systems | 21 COPENHAGEN OPERA HOUSE DENMARK

As a newly constructed opera house, the Copenhagen Opera is a rarity on the European continent. Waagner-Biro was involved in the project in two capacities. The company was responsible for the architecturally im- pressive steel and glass facade, thereby magnificently realizing and show- casing the plans of top architect Henning Larsen.

In addition, Waagner-Biro installed the complete stage equipment which, when completed in 2004, set new standards to match the importance of the new opera house. One of our stage equipment innovations was the cyclorama that can be raised by up to five metres to give access to the 2,500 m² stage. Equally innovative is the “Pinion-Drive” stage waggon system we supplied, which can move freely both vertically and horizon- tally.

The system’s drive units are secured to the floor and can be retracted. Whether it is from the inside or from the outside, the Copenhagen Ope- ra offers over 1,670 visitors an impressive sight and it has seamlessly joi- ned the ranks of the most important opera houses in Europe.

24 | Stage Systems Stage Systems | 25 GRIEGHALLEN BERGEN, NORWAY

Grieghallen in Bergen was built in the mid-1970s and is one of the most active concert halls in Scandinavia. Its piano-inspired architecture makes it one of Bergen’s most outstanding landmarks.

The refurbishment – done during the summer break in 2014 - included the refurbishment of the entire upper stage machinery and the stage con- trol system with over 50 drives as well as the grid, portal area and prosce- nium. Furthermore, 4 new stage platforms were installed in the Peer Gynt Salen and integrated in the CAT control system.

The system was delivered and handed over on time, it is user-friendlier, more flexible, designed for higher loads and easier to maintain. The CAT control system allows not only for programming complicated shows within a short time, the system also offers many possibilities of remote maintenance and inspection. Possible malfunctions can be recognized at an early stage online and can be repaired within the shortest possible pe- riod of time.

The opening of the anniversary season was held on 16 October 2014 in the renovated concert hall in the presence of the Norwegian Minister of Culture.

26 | Stage Systems Stage Systems | 27 STAVANGER KONSERTHUS NORWAY

The new concert house in Stavanger, inaugurated in September 2012, consists of two concert halls separated by a footpath. The red concrete box with its natural acoustics is a concert hall suited to the repertoire of symphony orchestras, while the glass box is a multi-purpose hall for lou- der rock and jazz concerts.

These two complementary halls were designed so as to allow for a classi- cal concert to be performed in one hall and a rock concert to take place in the other at the same time. With adjustable reflectors in form of a “cloud formation”, the volume of the hall can be adapted to the actual concert situation. The concert hall is equipped with 20 orchestra lifts, eight mo- vable ceiling elements, 11 winches for acoustic reflectors as well as cur- tain systems.

The multi-functional hall can be used for theatrical performances, musi- cals with fully equipped platform and orchestra pit, as a viewers rank and gallery, or as a flat hall with a stage for rock and pop concerts. It can also be used as a hall with seats with a podium for conferences etc. This hall is equipped with 20 scissor podiums at the back of the stage, six orchestra platforms, three ‚Spiralift‘ platforms, six telescopic seating blocs, chair s and 48 hoists in the upper stage machinery. In total, Waagner-Biro integ- rated 205 adjustable axes into the CAT control.

The opening of the Harpa National Concert and Conference Centre in May 2011 was an important moment for all of Iceland because it happe- ned during a time of financial insecurity in the country.

For Waagner-Biro the Harpa project was likewise special. The company supplied not only the complete stage equipment for three rooms (Con- cert Hall, Rehearsal Hall and Fourth Hall), but also supplied impressive acoustics solutions conceived by the architect Henning Larsen.

In cooperation with New York-based acoustic specialists, Artec Consul- tants, and with the help of innovative technology, Waagner-Biro installed in total 267 eighteen-metre-long acoustic curtains, 78 acoustic gates, 35 tons of mobile acoustic covers and a chorus waggon. This created a per- fect and flexible, controllable sound experience, whether for a major ope- ra or for more intimate theatrical drama.

32 | Stage Systems Stage Systems | 33 ARENA MADRID SPAIN

The Arena Rockódromo is a gigantic structure composed of concrete, steel and glass. And while it accommodates more than 10,500 spec- tators, it is well equipped for multiple purpose use.

Whether for tennis matches, music events or theatrical performances, the special telescopic stand system means that the venue can be easi- ly and rapidly adapted for every possible use. Individual stand areas, distributed across three height levels and grouped into modules, can be pushed together and seating can be literally lo- wered into the floor.

The telescopic stands are equipped with special mechanisms which guarantee high stability and can be easily extended and retracted. This can be controlled by one person using a mobile console. The project was completed in record time for a Tennis Master Series event in 2002.

The new concert hall and theatre in Kristian- sand in southern Norway is an attraction in its- elf to many visitors due to its impressive loca- tion directly on the harbour front and as a cultural institution. Acoustics was at the core of a contract awarded to Waagner-Biro in 2009. Our company undertook comprehensive work to optimise the acoustics of the theatre. This ranged from installing heavy acoustic curtains, through placing 30 acoustic reflectors to han- ging 40 acoustic banners.

This rewards the approximately 2,200 visitors with a sound experience of the highest order, which is controlled in the background with the help of the CAT control system.

In addition to the acoustic system, there are also two automated stands that can both be ex- tended into position and which have a semi- automatic seat folding function.
