Indian Harbor Yacht Club Dear FOS Participant,

Welcome to the 2011 season of Focus on (FOS). We are looking forward to a great summer of learning, racing, and social events. IHYC provides a fleet of eight Ideal 18s, a complete racing and clinic schedule, ladies sailing and fun events for you and your family to enjoy. is packet is a basic “User’s Guide” to the program. Please refer to it to answer questions about sign-outs, check-outs, safety regulations and other topics of interest. 2011 will be another great year for FOS.

For new members, FOS is a great way to meet other club members and make new friends. You can also develop basic skills that enable you to be a good citizen of IHYC, able to lend a hand on a race committee, understand the customs and etiquettes dating back to our founding in 1889 and learn about the fascinating history of our past members and their internationally famous yachts.

For summer members, FOS builds confidence and competency with an emphasis on safety and the “Corinthian” spirit of . From there, you can decide if it’s the sport for you. About 70% of our summer members join the club as full time members the following year. However, that decision is long off and depends on whether it’s a good fit for both you and the membership.

Aside from developing skills and knowledge, IHYC is a whole lot of fun for grown-ups, families and kids. e Sunfish Bar is a great place to meet and socialize with the coolest drinks and one of the best views on Long Island Sound. e food upstairs is excellent, as is the hospitality of our friendly and experienced staff.

Each year, the FOS membership is a little different so we strive to customize the program to your needs, schedule and changing interests. Do not be shy about communicating with the Committee or with our Sailing Director. As the season unfolds, we’ll keep you updated on program enhancements, racing results, team racing activities and upcoming family events via frequent postings on the FOS website. We’ll also keep you informed the old fashioned way—by word of mouth—so expect a few calls from us from time- to-time to keep those lines of communication open. Other updates can be found on the FOS Website and the bulletin board outside the Sailing Room.

Two important points: prior to taking a boat out for the first time, every sailor must submit a signed 2011 insurance waiver and be officially ‘checked out’ by the Sailing Director or his instructor staff. is is especially critical as we institute stringent guidelines for protecting and caring for our beautiful fleet.

See you on the water!

Sincerely, e FOS Committee Philip Zecher & Mary Alice Carmichael, Co-Chairs

John Bainton, Jr., Sailing Director 203-869-2484, x32 [email protected]

Education Basic Sailing Thursday Schedule: (6/2, 6/9, 6/16, & 6/23) Saturday Schedule: (6/4, 6/11, 6/18, & 6/25) Thursday and Saturday are the same lesson plans, so you may alternate when necessary. Courses meet for four sessions. Each session is from 1000-1200. Many stay for a debrief lunch afterwards. If possible, we try and order our lunch before sailing to help the kitchen staff. Combining theory and practical skills, this course provides an introduction to sailing for the non-sailor and offers others a chance to refresh fundamentals. Taking one of these courses is a must for beginners. You do not need a partner, come as you are and we’ll pair you up so you can make new friends. Often, more experienced FOS members will volunteer to sail with beginners to provide one-on-one instruction while sailing and to keep things safe.

Intermediate Sailing Thursday Schedule: (7/7, 7/14, 7/21, & 7/28) Saturday Schedule: (7/2, 7/9, 7/16, & 7/31) Note we skip (7/23) Thursday and Saturday are the same lesson plans, so you may alternate when necessary. Courses meet for four sessions. Each session is from 1000-1200. It’s a great opportunity for graduates of the Basic Sailing Class to continue learning and for those of us who are a little rusty to get a little brush up.

Sunday Tune-Ups June 12th – September 25th Sunday Tune-Up Sessions will be available to our racing- focused FOS sailors. Each Session will run from 1230–1430. is will be an opportunity to partake in some racing-focused boat handling drills and get everyone warmed up for some YRA Racing that gets started at 1450.

Private Lessons Private lessons are available by appointment from the Sailing Director at a cost of $95/hr.

Social Sailing and Events Ladies Ideal Sailing Tuesday Nights June 21st – July 26th is group engages in various activities such as summer evening sailing. All are welcome. Bring friends. Anyone who is not comfortable as skipper will be paired with someone that has experience. One person on board must be an approved FOS sailor. ere will be informal racing and no scoring. Ladies generally eat dinner together afterwards.

Western LIS Supper Series Dates (5/17-LYC, 5/24-RYC, 6/2-IHYC, & 6/9-AYC) For the more competitive Lady Racers, we have 4 evenings planned with Larchmont YC, American YC and Riverside YC. ($20 per person, includes racing and food after racing)

Family Fun/Outings Periodic social gatherings throughout the season are open to the whole IHYC membership and a great way to meet others. Includes sailing events such as fun regattas, a treasure hunt and special cruises. Sunday afternoon sailing with the kids is encouraged, followed by IHYC’s magnificent buffet which offers something for every sailor’s taste. Racing Ideal 18 Twilight Series Wednesday Nights May 18th– September 21st (First Start 1900) Learning from the best of your peers, all FOS members are encouraged to take part in a competitive yet FUN learning-oriented racing environment. Mixing up the crews (sometimes between races), with multiple starts and friendly rivalry, this structured program meets season long, culminating in a post racing barbecue and party each week. Racing may include boats from Old Greenwich YC, Belle Haven Club and Riverside YC.

Team Racing During practice, experienced and less experienced sailors are paired in boats and divided into multi-boat teams to race against each other. Interclub team racing occurs later in the season.

Summer Solstice Team Racing Tour 6/7 – Indian Harbor YC vs American YC @ IHYC 6/14 – Indian Harbor YC vs New York YC @ IHYC 6/21 – Indian Harbor YC vs Riverside YC @ RYC 6/28 – Indian Harbor YC vs Pequot YC @ PYC Compete against neighboring clubs at both home and away matches.

YRA Racing Schedule Starts Sunday May 22nd – (First Start 1450) Similar to last year, the Ideal fleet will participate in the YRA Racing on Captains Harbor. Enjoy some extra racing on Sundays with other Greenwich Ideal 18 sailors from Old Greenwich YC, Belle Haven Club and Riverside YC. YRA racing includes other local one-designs such as , Lasers and Vipers.

FOS Championships September 24th (First Start 1300) Top competitors from the Club Championships, Twilight Series and Fall Series will be invited to compete in this one day event to see who will be crowned the Focus on Sailing Champion.

Day Sailing Almost immediate gratification with its convenient design, the Ideal 18 can be sailed off the mooring in 5 minutes, making the one hour sail a reality. (Before taking a boat out on your own for the first time, you must be checked out by the Sailing Director and sign a waiver at the front desk.)

Other Ways to Get Involved Big Boat Twilight Racing e big boats of IHYC are often looking for crew for our own Wednesday Night Series or the frequent regattas that take place on the Sound during the season. Experience helps but is not always a requirement. Crewing is a great way to broaden your sailing experience and to meet other IHYC members. Come down to the Sunfish Bar by 6pm and ask a few boat owners and crew if they have any space on their boat for the evening. You will be amazed how many people are always looking for crew. www.ihyc-fos.org! 6 Indian Harbor Yacht Club ! FOCUS ON SAIING 2011

One Design Fleet Days Several fleets race locally and will host FOS sailors to try out the boats and potentially join their fleet as crew or as a boat owner. e Etchells fleet, Laser fleet, fleet, Viper fleet are all potential ways for you to expand your sailing experience here at IHYC. Race Committee Volunteering e Indian Harbor Race Committee team is always looking for extra help when the club hosts events. Contact the Race Committee Chairperson, Craig Reynolds or the Sailing Director to get involved.
