“HUMANITY (Love is in the air)” Written by Dick Wagner Performed by: Bobby Taylor and the ASU Humanity Choir Dick Wagner (1942 to 2014) was a prolific songwriter and lead guitar player, legendary for his work with Alice Cooper, Lou Reed, Aerosmith, Kiss, and many more. Dick was generous in donating his talent and time to benefit the lives of others, and in the recent years before his passing, he wrote and produced songs and projects for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, the homeless of Detroit, Guitars for Vets, and to raise awareness of violence against women and children. In February 2014, Dick and Susan Michelson met with Dr. Neal Lester, founder of the Humanity 101 project at Arizona State University. Dr. Lester invited Dick to present a seminar, “An Evening with Dick Wagner.” A humanitarian by nature, Dick was so impressed by the Humanity 101 principles and objectives that he immediately wrote a song called, “Humanity (Love is in the Air).” He recorded a casual demo of the song and forwarded it to Dr. Lester. Dr. Lester loved the song and asked Dick to record the song, present and perform it as part of his planned ASU seminar. Five months later, Dick passed away unexpectedly. Dr. Lester invited Susan Michelson to be on the Advisory Board of Humanity 101. Over the course of several lunches and meetings, Dr. Lester continually expressed his interest in recording the song for ASU and Humanity 101. Two years later, Dr. Lester continued to pursue his desire to record the song. His passion for the project and the song led Susan to express that there was only one person with whom she would like to work to record the song.

May 23, 2013 MUSIC Bachman, Ezrin, Pieczonka honoured by Royal Conservatory of Music David Rockne Corrigan Randy Bachman, Bob Ezrin, and Adrianne Pieczonka were named Honourary Fellows of The Royal Conservatory of Music on Wednesday night at Toronto’s Koerner Hall. At the Royal Occasion Gala, audience members were treated to performances by the internationally-acclaimed musicians. Pieczonka, an alumna of The Royal Conservatory, is a soprano opera singer who has performed all over the world. Raised in Burlington, she looks back fondly on her time studying piano at the Royal Conservatory in Hamilton, and she has maintained a relationship since. “I trained at Western University and at U of T but the Royal Conservatory is so close to the faculty of music at U of T that I often spent time there — either practicing or in the wonderful bookshop,” she said. Adrianne Pieczonka, pictured here in 2011, was honoured at last night's "Royal Occasion Gala" at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto. Pieczonka, who is also an Officer of the Order of Canada and recipient of a Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal, says Canadians should take pride in their musicians, especially as more people are starting to notice them on the global stage. “Canada is a fantastic place to train as an opera singer,” she said. “I sing all over the world and I am often asked, ‘Why are there so many great Canadian opera singers?’ I think the training is getting even stronger. I am so impressed hearing the young artists in the [Canadian Opera Company's] ensemble program or the students in the voice programs at the universities.” Some of those students were given an opportunity to perform last night–young musicians from the Conservatory’s Glenn Gould School and the Phil and Eli Taylor Performance Academy for Young Artists also took the stage.

WANDER DOWN RIVER; A COLLECTION OF SHORT STORIES by LAURA PAYNE, B.A. A THESIS IN ENGLISH Submitted to the Graduate Faculty of Texas Tech University in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of MASTER OF ARTS Approved Accepted December, 1995 /Wo ih^O^ ACKNOWLEDGMENTS I owe a debt of gratitude to Professors Doug Crowell and Jill Patterson. Dr. Crowell first challenged me to work hard and aspire toward an artistic voice. He made me realize my own writing through self-critique. Dr. Patterson gave me unerring support and advice. She listened patiently to my insecurities and gave me honesty in return. William Faulkner once said in a 1956 interview with Jean Stein that the formula for a good writer is dictated by the demons that choose him and that formula goes as follows: "99% talent...99% discipline...99% work... He must never be satisfied with what he does. It is never as good as it can be. Always dream and shoot higher than you know you can do." Without the caring and expertise of my committee, I do not believe that I could have understood or agreed with Mr. Faulkner. I also thank my friends, family, and classmates. 1 especially thank Mase Lewter for being my friend and for somehow finding something valuable in my stories. Her outlook on life and talent as a writer constantly inspired me to work on, to dream, and to shoot higher. Thank you to my parents for raising me up right and for not suffering a collective coronary when I chose not to be a lawyer but to write stories instead.

  • Detroit Rock & Roll by Ben Edmonds for Our Purposes, The
"KICK OUT THE JAMS!" Detroit Rock & Roll by Ben Edmonds For our purposes, the story of Detroit rock & roll begins on September 3, 1948, when a little-known local performer named John Lee Hooker entered United Sound Studios for his first recording session. Rock & roll was still an obscure rhythm & blues catchphrase, certainly not yet a musical genre, and Hooker's career trajectory had been that of the standard-issue bluesman. A native of the Mississippi Delta, he had drifted north for the same reason that eastern Europeans and Kentucky hillbillies, Greeks and Poles and Arabs and Asians and Mexicans had all been migrating toward Michigan in waves for the first half of the 20th Century. "The Motor City it was then, with the factories and everything, and the money was flowing," Hooker told biographer Charles Shaar Murray." All the cars were being built there. Detroit was the city then. Work, work, work, work. Plenty work, good wages, good money at that time."1 He worked many of those factories, Ford and General Motors among them, and at night he plied the craft of the bluesman in bars, social clubs and at house parties. But John Lee Hooker was no ordinary bluesman, and the song he cut at the tail of his first session, "Boogie Chillen," was no ordinary blues. Accompanied only by the stomp of his right foot, his acoustic guitar hammered an insistent pattern, partially based on boogie-woogie piano, that Hooker said he learned from his stepfather back in Mississippi as "country boogie." Informed by the urgency and relentless drive of his Detroit assembly line experiences, John Lee's urban guitar boogie would become a signature color on the rock & roll palette, as readily identifiable as Bo Diddley's beat or Chuck Berry's ringing chords.
