Dr. Pankaj Chetia, Assistant Professor, Department of Life Sciences, Dibrugarh University was invited as Resource Person for the Two-Day Workshop cum Hands on Training programme on “Bioinformatics: Scope and Applications” on 13th and 14th March, 2020. The workshop was organized by the Department of Zoology of the College with four technical sessions. A group comprising of 42 students of 6th Semester of Zoology (Major) and Botany (Major), 2019-20 participated in the programme. The first technical session was aimed at giving fundamentals of bioinformatics: introduction, history and scope of bioinformatics; sources of information, internet world wide web and web browsers. The second technical session was on the Biological database: introduction, basic concepts of primary and secondary databases; Nucleic acid and protein sequence database (NCBI, gene bank and SWISS- PROT); Data mining and data mining tools (ENTREZ). The third technical session devoted on Database search and sequence alignment, tools of sequence alignment – FASTA and BLAST; methods of sequence alignment; phylogenetic analysis: basic concept, steps in evaluation of phylogeny and constructing phylogenetic trees.

The final technical session provided mainly hands on experience on different e-resources and database search, similarity search in sequence such as BLAST / FASTA and creation of databases. All the technical sessions witnessed very active participation from the students. The workshop provided hands on experience in implementing various current researches and pressing data issues facing the bioinformatics filed today and in the near future.
