Abia 2. Anambra 3. Bayelsa 4. Imo A WATER SUPPLY AND SANITATION INVESTMENT MASTER PLAN PROJECT OBJECTIVES Prepare Water Supply and Sanitation Investment Plan Increase access to improved water supply and sanitation services Improve the financial viability of existing water utilities. Increase the investment plan capacity. 5 Why Do We Treat Drinking Water? Drinking water is treated to protect public health by removing microorganisms and natural or man-made chemicals that may cause illness to consumers. Water Purification may also be used to improve the water's color, taste and odor as required. 6 Water Quality Water quality is the physical, chemical, biological characteristics of water which determines its suitability for a variety of uses and for protecting the health. Water quality depends on the local geology and ecosystem, as well as human uses such as sewage dispersion, industrial pollution, and agriculture runoff. Water is essential to sustain life, and a satisfactory supply (adequate, safe, and accessible) must be available to all. Improving access to safe drinking-water can result in tangible benefits to health. The great majority of evident water-related problems are the result of microbial (bacteriological, viral, protozoan, or other biological) contamination. World Health Organization has set the Guidelines for Drinking-water Quality of which the primary purpose is the protection of public health. 7 Basic Parameters of Water Physical Properties Color Odor Temperature turbidity Solids Conductivity Chemical Properties pH Dissolved oxygen (DO) Chemical oxygen demand (COD) Biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) Inorganic Chemicals (Metals, minerals, and nutrients) Organic Chemicals (Pesticides, Benzene, etc.) Biological Properties Pathogens (Viruses, Bacteria, Protozoa, etc.) Fecal Coliforms 8 Surface Water Purification Works WATER SUPPLY PROJECT Water Purification involves two major processes: 1. Physical removal of solids 2. Chemical disinfection 9 Surface Water Purification Works WATER SUPPLY PROJECT Water Purification involves two major processes: 1. physical removal of solids 2. chemical disinfection Alum Disinfectant (Cl2, NaOCl) Raw Water Mixing Flocculation Filtration Storage Sedimentation Clear Well Distribution 10 Groundwater Purification Works WATER SUPPLY PROJECT 11 A WATER SUPPLY AND SANITATION INVESTMENT MASTER PLAN PROJECT SUMMARIZED METHODOLOGY Preparing inventory for the existing water and sanitation infrastructure and assessing their capabilities to cater for the real demand. This will lead to identify gaps, needs, and priority areas for investments. Potential solutions and plan of action will be included in the Final Investment Master Plan Program. 12 PROJECT METHODOLOGY Data Analysis Gaps Modelling Solutions Short and Long Collection Term Planning 13 PROJECT COORDINATION LOGISTICS Core team including engineers and Close coordination with the Client surveyors, and land use experts Conducting stakeholder presentations Gathering the required available data at each milestone Supported by its membership of Dar Group, an international grouping of companies 14 PROJECT METHODOLOGY WORK PROGRAMME DELIVERABLE EVENTS Phase 1 -
