Chapter 17 Ecological and Anthropogenic Influences on Patterns of Parasitism in Free-Ranging Primates: A Meta-analysis of the Genus Alouatta Martin M. Kowalewski and Thomas R. Gillespie 17.1 Introduction Parasites play a central role in tropical ecosystems, affecting the ecology and evolution of species interactions, host population growth and regulation, and com- munity biodiversity (Esch and Fernandez 1993; Hudson, Dobson and Newborn 1998; Hochachka and Dhondt 2000; Hudson et al. 2002). Our understanding of how nat- ural and anthropogenic factors affect host-parasite dynamics in free-ranging pri- mate populations (Gillespie, Chapman and Greiner 2005a; Gillespie, Greiner and Chapman 2005b; Gillespie and Chapman 2006) and the relationship between wild primates and human health in rural or remote areas (McGrew et al. 1989; Stuart et al. 1990; Muller-Graf, Collins and Woolhouse 1997; Gillespie et al. 2005b; Pedersen et al. 2005) remain largely unexplored. The majority of emerging infec- tious diseases are zoonotic – easily transferred among humans, wildlife, and domes- ticated animals – (Nunn and Altizer 2006). For example, Taylor, Latham and Woolhouse (2001) found that 61% of human pathogens are shared with animal hosts. Identifying general principles governing parasite occurrence and prevalence is critical for planning animal conservation and protecting human health (Nunn et al. 2003). In this review, we examine how various ecological and anthropogenic factors affect patterns of parasitism in free-ranging howler monkeys (Genus Alouatta). 17.1.1 Evidence of the Relationships Between Howlers and Parasitic Diseases in South America The genus Alouatta is the most geographically widespread non-human primate in South America, with 8 of 10 Alouatta species ranging from Northern Colombia M.M. -

Reports of Pholeoixodes spp. from carnivores are frequently contradictory, and their identification is not based on key diagnostic characters. Therefore, the aims of the present study were to identify ticks collected from dogs, foxes and badgers in several European countries, and to reassess their systematic status with molecular analyses using two mitochondrial markers. Results: Between 2003 and 2017, 144 Pholeoixodes spp. ticks were collected in nine European countries. From accurate descriptions and comparison with type-materials, a simple illustrated identification key was compiled for adult females, by focusing on the shape of the anterior surface of basis capituli. Based on this key, 71 female ticks were identified as I. canisuga,21asI. kaiseri and 21 as I. hexagonus. DNA was extracted from these 113 female ticks, and from further 31 specimens. Fragments of two mitochondrial genes, cox1 (cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1) and 16S rRNA, were amplified and sequenced. Ixodes kaiseri had nine unique cox1 haplotypes, which showed 99.2–100% sequence identity, whereas I. -

DOI: 10.1089=vbz.2008.0195 Transmission Dynamics of Borrelia lusitaniae and Borrelia afzelii Among Ixodes ricinus, Lizards, and Mice in Tuscany, Central Italy Charlotte Ragagli,1,2 Luigi Bertolotti,1,3 Mario Giacobini,1,3 Alessandro Mannelli,1 Donal Bisanzio,1,3 Giusi Amore,1,4 and Laura Tomassone1 Abstract To estimate the basic reproduction number (R0)ofBorrelia lusitaniae and Borrelia afzelii, we formulated a mathematical model considering the interactions among the tick vector, vertebrate hosts, and pathogens in a 500-ha enclosed natural reserve on Le Cerbaie hills, Tuscany, central Italy. In the study area, Ixodes ricinus were abundant and were found infected by B. lusitaniae and B. afzelii. Lizards (Podarcis spp.) and mice (Apodemus spp.), respectively, are the reservoir hosts of these two Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato (s.l.) genospecies and compete for immature ticks. B. lusitaniae R0 estimation is in agreement with field observations, indicating the maintenance and diffusion of this genospecies in the study area, where lizards are abundant and highly infested by I. ricinus immature stages. In fact, B. lusitaniae shows a focal distribution in areas where the tick vector and the vertebrate reservoir coexist. Mouse population dynamics and their relatively low suitability as hosts for nymphs seem to determine, on the other hand, a less efficient transmission of B. afzelii, whose R0 differs between scenarios in the study area. Considering host population dynamics, the proposed model suggests that, given a certain combi- nation of the two host population sizes, both spirochete genospecies can coexist in our study area. -

Ear, heart, bladder, femoro-tibial joint, brain and spinal cord were examined. B. lusitaniae strain PotiB2 &6 of 10 mice) and B. burgdorferi sensu stricto strain N40 &9 of 10 mice) induced similar lesions in the bladder of infected mice characterised as a multifocal, lymphoid, interstitial cystitis. Moreover, both B. lusitaniae PotiB2 and B. burdorferi N40 induced lesions in the heart of infected mice. The lesions induced by B. lusitaniae PotiB2 &2 of 10 mice) were characterised as a severe, necrotising endarteritis of the aorta, with a minimal, mixed in¯ammatory in®ltrate &neutrophils, macrophages and lymphoid cells) extending into the adjacent myocardium. In contrast, B. burgdorferi N40 induced a periarteritis of the pulmonary artery &7 of 10 mice), with no involvement of the endothelium and more extensive in¯ammation and subsequent necrosis of the adjacent myocardium. -
Prevalence of Borrelia Anserina in Argas Ticks

This study was designed to determine the prevalence of Borrelia anserina in poultry soft ticks, Argas persicus collected from birds and poultry farms. A total of 1500 ticks were collected from poultry farms located in Faisalabad and Kamalia, Pakistan. B. anserina was isolated using BSK-H medium and confirmed by dark field microscopy and indirect immunoflourescence. In addition, B. anserina was characterized using polymerase chain reaction by employing specific primer set of fla B gene. Of 750 tick samples collected from poultry birds, 144 (19.2%) were positive for B. anserina; whereas 131 (17.4%) were positive collected from poultry farms. The data indicated that the Argas ticks had the significant prevalence of B. anserina. Furthermore, the data may warrant future studies towards the vector control and/or immunoprophylaxsis against B. anserina which might indirectly be helpful for the eradication of this threatening disease.
