    En 1898, Jean Dupuis fonde à Marcinelle une imprimerie. Celle-ci ne cessera de croître durant un quart de siècle. En 1922, les éditions Dupuis lancent l'hebdomadaire "Les Bonnes Soirées", magazine contenant des romans et destinés aux femmes au foyer. En 1924 paraît "Le Moustique" plutôt destiné à un lectorat masculin et contenant des articles d'actualité ainsi que les programmes radio. Fort du succès de ces deux publications, l'éditeur décide de s'adresser aux jeunes en créant l'hebdomadaire "Spirou" dont le n°1 paraît le 21 avril 1938 (tirage 80.000 exemplaires). Le titre du journal signifie "écureuil" en dialecte wallon de Charleroi, par extension il désigne également un garçon vif et espiègle. La série Spirou est dessinée par Rob-Vel, de son vrai nom Robert Velter (1909 – 1991) qui dessinait déjà le personnage de Toto dans la publication française du même nom. Robert Velter sera engagé très jeune comme steward sur les bateaux faisant les traversées transatlantiques. Il consacre son temps libre aux croquis et caricatures, entre autres des petits grooms débrouillards au service des passagers. Lorsque Dupuis le contacte en 1937 pour créer le personnage de Spirou, c'est tout naturellement qu'il pense à un groom qu'il placera dans le "Moustic Hôtel", clin d'œil à l'hebdomadaire de la même maison d'éditions. Les premières aventures de Spirou sont fraîches et naïves. Rob-Vel dessinera plus d'une centaine de planches en deux ans. Toutefois, en 1940 il sera mobilisé et il ne pourra plus fournir ses dessins aux Editions Dupuis.
