24th and 25th June 2017 : Twelfth Sunday of Ordinary Time

Although we begin once again our ‘green’ Sundays this weekend we still have some celebrating left: Thursday is the Solemnity of and Saint Paul, and a Holy Day of Obligation, when all Catholics are bound to attend Mass and refrain from servile work. As we prepare for this great feast, we can meditate on these words of Saint Augustine:

This day has been consecrated for us by the martyrdom of the blessed apostles Peter and Paul. It is not some obscure we are talking about. Their sound has gone out into all the earth, and their words to the ends of the world. These martyrs had seen what they proclaimed, they pursued justice by confessing the truth, by dying for the truth. The blessed Peter, the first of the Apostles, the ardent lover of Christ, who was found worthy to hear, And I say to you, that you are Peter. He himself, you see, had just said, You are the Christ, the Son of the living God. Christ said to him, And I say to you that you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my Church. Upon this rock I will build the faith you have just confessed. Upon your words, You are the Christ, the Son of the living God, I will build my Church; because you are Peter. Peter comes from petra, meaning a rock. Peter, “Rocky,” from “rock”; not “rock” from “Rocky.” Peter comes from the word for a rock in exactly the same way as the name Christian comes from Christ. Before his passion the Lord Jesus, as you know, chose those disciples of his whom he called apostles. Among these it was only Peter who almost everywhere was given the privilege of representing the whole Church. It was in the person of the whole Church, which he alone represented, that he was privileged to hear, To you will I give the keys of the kingdom of heaven. After all, it is not just one man that received these keys, but the Church in its unity. So this is the reason for Peter’s acknowledged pre- eminence, that he stood for the Church’s universality and unity, when he was told, To you I am entrusting, what has in fact been entrusted to all. To show you that it is the Church which has received the keys of the kingdom of heaven, listen to what the Lord says in another place to all his apostles: Receive the Holy Spirit; and immediately afterwards, Whose sins you forgive, they will be forgiven them; whose sins you retain, they will be retained. Quite rightly, too, did the Lord after his resurrection entrust his sheep to Peter to be fed. It is not, you see, that he alone among the disciples was fit to feed the Lord’s sheep; but when Christ speaks to one man, unity is being commended to us. And he first speaks to Peter, because Peter is the first among the apostles. Do not be sad, Apostle. Answer once, answer again, answer a third time. Let confession conquer three times with love, because self-assurance was conquered three times by fear. What you had bound three times must be loosed three times. Loose through love what you had bound through fear. And for all that, the Lord once, and again, and a third time, entrusted his sheep to Peter. There is one day for the passion of two apostles. But these two also were as one; although they suffered on different days, they were as one. Peter went first, Paul followed. We are celebrating a feast day, consecrated for us by the blood of the apostles. Let us love their faith, their lives, their labours, their sufferings, their confession of faith, their preaching.

Consecration anniversary of our church – Wednesday 5th July

Although our church was built and opened in 1864 it couldn’t be consecrated – that is, solemnly blessed and dedicated to God – until all of the debt had been paid off. For various reasons this took some time, and so it wasn’t until 1952 that the consecration of the church was celebrated. Bishop Edward Ellis, Bishop of Nottingham at the time, came to Stamford and celebrated Mass in Saint Mary and Saint Augustine’s church on 5th July 1952. The ritual was very elaborate: the outside of the church was sprinkled with a type of holy water; the inside of the church was cleared of benches, and piles of ash, with the letters of the Greek and Roman alphabet inscribed in them, were sprinkled on the floor; the walls were anointed in 12 paces with the Scared Chrism, and finally relics were deposited in the altar, which itself was anointed with the Sacred Christ on each corner and then in the middle. The tradition of the Church is to celebrate each year the dedication of the Pope’s Cathedral, the Lateran Basilica in Rome (on 9th November) and the dedication of the local cathedral, Saint Cathedral in Nottingham (on 30th August) as well as the annual anniversary of the dedication of the local church itself. We’ll celebrate Mass on Wednesday 5th July at 7pm and afterwards celebrate with strawberries and Pimms on the parish lawn – do come and be part of our birthday party! Last weekend we celebrated the Solemnity of the Body and Blood of Christ, a good time to remind ourselves of how we receive Holy Communion at Mass.  Please clearly indicate whether you wish to receive Holy Communion on the tongue (by sticking your tongue out – not just opening your mouth), or on the palm of your hand (with your hands open and flat);  Please clearly say ‘Amen’ to the priest’s question: The Body of Christ. By doing so you are confirming your belief in the Real Presence of Jesus!

The Pope’s Prayer Intentions for June

Each month Pope Francis acks Catholics, and indeed all people of goodwill, to pray for specific intentions. This month the Pope’s Prayer Intentions are:

National Leaders: That national leaders may firmly commit themselves to ending the arms trade, which victimizes so many innocent people. War and Terrorism: May the Holy Spirit grant peace to the entire world. May He heal the wounds of war and terrorism, which most recently struck innocent civilians in London. Let us pray for the victims and their families.

New Acting Headteacher for our Parish Primary School

Dear Parishioners I am delighted to inform you that the Governors have appointed Mrs Erica Holt as our new Acting Headteacher from September 2018. Mrs Holt is a very experienced Headteacher, and currently interim Headteacher at Cottingham Primary School near Market Harborough. An invitation will be sent out shortly for parents to meet Mrs Holt before the end of term, and parishioners will have the opportunity to meet her at school Masses, and in our parish, too, very soon. We look forward to welcoming her into our school family at St Augustine’s. Yours sincerely Sarah Archer, Chair of Governors Ramadan : Friday 26th May until Saturday 24th June

A message from the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue of the Holy See for the month of Ramadan and ‘Id al Fitr’ – 1438 H – 2017 AD

Dear Muslim Brothers and Sisters, We wish to assure you of our prayerful solidarity during this time of fasting in the month of Ramadan and the celebration of ‘Id al–Fitr that concludes it, and we extend to you our heartfelt best wishes for serenity, joy and abundant spiritual gifts. This year’s Message is especially timely and significant: fifty years ago, in 1967, only three years after the establishment of this Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue (PCID) by Pope Paul VI on 19 May 1964, the first Message was sent for this occasion. In the years that have followed, two Messages have been particularly important: the Message of 1991, during the pontificate of Pope John Paul II, entitled “The Path of Believers is the Way of Peace”, and the Message of 2013, in the first year of Pope Francis’ pontificate, entitled “Promoting Mutual Respect through Education”. Both Messages were signed by the Pontiffs. Among the many activities of the PCID for promoting dialogue with Muslims, the most important and longstanding is this yearly Message for Ramadan and for ‘Id al-Fitr addressed to Muslims throughout the world. To share this Message in the widest way possible, the PCID is assisted by local Catholic communities, as well as Papal Representatives present in almost every country. The experience of both our religious communities affirms the value of this Message for promoting cordial relations between Christian and Muslim neighbours and friends, by offering insights on current and pressing issues. For this year, the PCID offers a theme related to Pope Francis’ Encyclical Letter “ Laudato Si’– On Care for Our Common Home”, which was addressed not only to Catholics and Christians, but to the whole of humanity. Pope Francis draws attention to the harm our lifestyles and decisions are causing to the environment, to ourselves and to our fellow human beings. There are, for example, certain philosophical, religious, and cultural perspectives that present obstacles which threaten humanity’s relationship with nature. To take up this challenge involves all of us, regardless of whether or not we profess a religious belief. The Encyclical’s title itself is expressive: the world is a “common home”, a dwelling for all the members of the human family. Therefore, no one person, nation or people can impose exclusively their understanding of our planet. This is why Pope Francis appeals “for a new dialogue about how we are shaping the future of our planet …since the environmental challenge we are undergoing, and its human roots, concern and affects us all” (n. 14). Pope Francis states that “the ecological crisis is also a summons to profound interior conversion” (no. 217). What is needed is education, spiritual openness and a “global ecological conversion” to adequately address this challenge. As believers, our relationship with God should be increasingly shown in the way we relate to the world around us. Our vocation to be guardians of God’s handiwork is not optional, nor it is tangential to our religious commitment as Christians and Muslims: it is an essential part of it. May the religious insights and blessings that flow from fasting, prayer and good works sustain you, with God’s help, on the path of peace and goodness, to care for all the members of the human family and for the whole of creation. With these sentiments, we wish you once again serenity, joy and prosperity.

From the Vatican, 19 May 2017 Jean-Louis Cardinal Tauran Bishop Miguel Ángel Ayuso Guixot, MCCl

Can we be challenged to wish a ‘Joyful Eid’ to someone this weekend?

Prayer for the Day for Life – Mary, Mother of the Life Within

This beautiful prayer, which we prayed at Masses last Sunday, will be used again in October, on the 50th anniversary of the passing of the Abortion Act. We might like to pray it frequently during these next weeks:

O Mary, Mother of the Life Within, all life we entrust to you; the life of every expectant mother and the child within her womb: the life of every human body, the life of every human soul; the life of every new-born child and the life of all grown old. You held the Lord to your own heart and drew Him so close in. So draw us now in all our needs, O Mother of the Life Within. Amen. Eucharistic Congress

The bishops of England and Wales have just announced that they plan to hold a National Eucharistic Pilgrimage and Congress in Liverpool next year (7-9 September 2018). Eucharistic Congresses are gatherings of clergy, religious and laity which promote an awareness of the central place of the Eucharist in the life and mission of the Church. The last Eucharistic Congress in England was held in Westminster in 1908 when permissions for a public procession of the Blessed Sacrament were refused. Participants at the Congress will take part in a series of Catechism sessions, focusing on different dimensions of the Eucharist and the daily celebration and adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. On the first day of the Congress, there will be a Theological Symposium, with workshops focussing on Scripture, Ecclesiology, Eucharistic Language and Catechism and a Workshop on the Rites and Music for Eucharistic Adoration. The Echo Arena in Liverpool will be the home to a six- hour stage programme on the second day of the Congress, which will include a Congress Mass, keynote speakers and a drama highlighting the beauty of reverence and devotion. The day will conclude with Adoration. On the final day of the Congress, Sunday, there will be pilgrimage Masses and a street procession, open to all. Recently Cardinal Nichols wrote: “We seek to rejuvenate Eucharistic adoration in our parishes as the source of strength for our lives and for our mission, that of making present the love and compassion of Jesus in our society.” Every diocese in England and Wales will take part in the Congress and the Cardinal encourages people to make the pilgrimage to the Eucharistic Congress. Pope Francis has encouraged everyone to visit the Blessed Sacrament, if possible, every day: “Moreover, I want to encourage everyone to visit – if possible, every day – especially amid life's difficulties, the Blessed Sacrament of the infinite love of Christ and His mercy, preserved in our churches, to speak with Him, to listen to Him in silence, and to peacefully entrust yourself to Him.” The Eucharistic Congress has been given the title Adoremus (let us adore). This will bring people together and further the service of the poor and marginalised in our midst. It will also aim to provide practical resources to develop the mission of the Church in prayer, contemplation and adoration of the Blessed Sacrament.

Restoring Dignity, Reviving Hope Currently we are experiencing a very rapid turnover in our stock and our cupboards are quite low in all areas except pasta and coffee. Donations of soup, tinned tomatoes, tinned spaghetti, tinned vegetables, meat, fish, fruit and rice pudding as well as dried noodles, instant mash, fruit juice and biscuits will be gratefully received. For the first time ever we are low on baked beans! Over the past few months we have seen an increase in the number of homeless living in various sites around the town. Obviously they have different food requirements as cooking is a limited option when you only have a can gas burner so please bear this in mind if you are buying an item for the foodbank. We regularly analyse our data and this year we have seen a big change in the reason people are coming to foodbank. A year ago it was benefit delays or changes; now it is low income. Zero hours’ contracts and minimum wage employment mean that the ‘just about managing’ families are really struggling at times; more are coming forward and are grateful for the support the foodbank can give them. The long school holidays will be with us soon so we expect an increase in families needing our support. Also the Universal Credit Scheme is due to be rolled out in the Stamford region in October which we anticipate will impact on demand at the foodbank. From the above you can see that there is a continuing and increasing need for our services. We offer a massive thank you to everyone who continually supports our work through regular donations. Without this support we would not be able to reach out to people in need. Oundle foodbank Is now operating one day a week, have had their first vouchers, as a satellite foodbank with Hardwick as the Project Manager. Regular collections of food from Oundle are coming into our store. Stamford Housing Essentials Project – SHEP We have now been running for a year suppling household essentials to those who qualify for a foodbank voucher. Over 65 individuals and families have been supported with the majority having been recently in a homeless situation. We are in process of training up a volunteer project manager and now have two drivers/project delivery people. Cummins have made a third container available to us at their Barnack Road facility along with parking space for the van. We are currently arranging for a barn on a farm to store larger furniture. Until these are operational we are limited in what we can store, however the following are always in High demand: chests of drawers, small tables and chair sets, Small wardrobes. Thank you for your support. [email protected] 07570 583799 This Week in our Parish Primary School

We have celebrated ‘Other Faiths’ week in school this week where the children have been learning about Buddhism. Year 3 / 4 put together some wonderfully well narrated dramas to explain how Buddhism began and acted them outside in the gazebo. They were all quite humbled by Buddha, real name Siddhartha Gautama and how he made the choice to leave his luxurious lifestyle behind to search the real meaning behind life.

Year 6 loved their week-long stay at The Briars in Derbyshire, which was jam-packed with fun activities, prayers and plenty of ice creams! On Monday, children stopped in at Chatsworth House on the journey to The Briars, where they enjoyed a look around the stately home as well as seeing a special display of costumes by world-famous designers including Alexander McQueen and Vivienne Westwood. The best part of the day, though, was visiting the petting zoo and adventure playground in the grounds of the house! On Tuesday, children proved how fit they were on an 11-mile walk in the Derbyshire countryside and along the Cromford Canal, and followed this up on Wednesday with a mini-Olympic Games at The Briars! Thursday brought the opportunity to visit the wonderful Tramway Museum in Crich, which included riding the trams, looking at the former lead mines, and a woodland walk that took us past some very unusual wooden sculptures. The evening Mass, celebrated by Father Simon, and the disco was another highlight of an amazing week, which none of the children wanted to come to an end. Miss Moon, Mrs Jones and the Briars staff were thoroughly impressed by the children's good behaviour, manners and positive attitude, which made the trip a pleasure for everyone.

Mission Statement this week: I know how to show that I am sorry Email Difficulties

We have been experiencing some technical difficulties with the parish email account – [email protected] – and at present emails sent to this account can’t be accessed. Hopefully the situation will be resolved shortly, but for the time being please send any emails to Father Simon’s own email address, which is [email protected]

Candle Money

You might have noticed the new wall-safe installed at the back of ‘s chapel, beneath the ambry. The four slots have now been labelled and can be used for candle money, repository money (including Mass cards), offerings for Masses for the Holy Souls, and offerings for the poor. The wall-safe in the Marian Chapel is working well, and the envelopes beneath the candle stands are now discontinued.

Church Lighting

The final work to be undertaken in church is a renewal of the lighting system. The current lights are both old and inefficient, costing a significant amount more to use each time they are turned on than more modern, LED lighting would. In additional many of the fittings are starting to wear out, causing pockets of darkness in church. A scheme is currently being considered, and a trial uplight and a trial wall light have been installed on the east wall, between the windows. Please have a look at the light and pass on any thoughts or comments to Father Simon or Chris King. The proposed system would have different types of lights, but most (in the nave of the church) would be wall-mounted instead of the current ceiling-mounted approach. It would be good to have a variety of views before final decisions are made.

Diocesan Prayer for Priestly and Religious Vocations

Almighty God, we pray, give us holy priests to strengthen us in our Christian calling, that we may be more closely conformed to Christ and share more effectively in his saving work. Through their ministry at the altar, and by their administration of the sacraments, may our lives be sanctified and become more closely associated with the redemptive sacrifice of Christ. As they preach the Gospel and teach the faith may we be inspired to dedicate ourselves to the work of evangelisation. As they serve our parishes may we be led into deeper communion of faith, hope and charity. O God, bless our diocese also with men and women who will serve the mission of the Church by taking religious vows, inspiring us with lives consecrated to you. A reflection from ‘Marriage Matters’

Fear conceals itself… How easy to become paranoid, to wonder what others might be saying about us. These aspects can be present outside our relationship and within it; at their core is fear! Jesus continuously exhorts the Twelve, “do not be afraid…every hair on your head has been counted”. Living our life now in Christ, we will not fear what others think. Prayers For . . .
