He was posted as minister in Pakistan’s embassy in Kabul at a critical time, before and during the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan in 1979. His last assignment in the Government was to work as Chief Secretary, Baluchistan. The Wandering Falcon, Jamil Ahmad’s debut novel, published in 2011 is a product based on his personal experiences about the Nomadic life of the tribes inhabiting Baluchistan, Waziristan and Swat valley. It is, undoubtedly, a rich cultural and historical document. In The Wandering Falcon, Ahmad highlights the diehard old customs, codes, traditions of the Balochi people and their love and romance with nomadic life. 1. An Overview of the Story The Wandering Falcon is a jagged piece of writing, a slackly woven collection of nine stories depicting the interior view of the Baloch life. The central among these stories is a saga of romance: Gul Bibi’s eccentric crush on a man of humble race and her elopement with him desiring to settle in the haven of love. Gul Bibi’s abscondment is sinful according to the tribal customs, putting her existence at stake. Both Gul Bibi and her lover remain under search and hunt of their people and are murdered, leaving a son Tor Baz behind. There are other stories out of which the “Kafir” Mullah Berari’s tale, his wanderings, his baffling and enigmatic character is relatively more engaging.

CLEMENTS Ph.D. 2013 ORIENTING MUSLIMS: MAPPING GLOBAL SPHERES OF AFFILIATION AND AFFINITY IN CONTEMPORARY SOUTH ASIAN FICTION MADELINE AMELIA CLEMENTS A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements of the University of East London for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy December 2013 i Abstract This thesis asks how four South Asian Muslim novelists have responded to the challenge of writing about Islamic faith ties in the aftermath of the 11 September 2001 attacks on New York’s World Trade Centre and the ensuing “war on terror”. This is a period when Muslim writers and commentators have come under increasing pressure to “explain” Islamic affiliations and affinities, and – as Pnina Werbner (2002: 1) has put it – to ‘disclose where ... the centres of their subjective universe lie’. Focussing on the international novels of Nadeem Aslam, Mohsin Hamid, Salman Rushdie, and Kamila Shamsie, this thesis explores the hypothesis that they can be read as part of a post-9/11 attempt to revise modern “knowledge” of the Islamic world, using globally-disseminated literature to reframe Muslims’ potential to connect with others, whether Muslims who subscribe to other versions of Islam, or non-Muslims. It considers how the “world literature” these authors create and shape maps spheres of Islamic affiliation and affinity, questioning where their subjects turn in seeking a sense of connection or identification, and why. It provides a detailed examination of the inter-cultural and intra-cultural affiliations and affinities the characters pursue in these texts, asking what aesthetic, historical, political and spiritual identifications or commitments could influence such connective attempts.

Yet literary scholars have largely ignored the importance of these works of fiction looking into the lives of Pashtuns. This paper proposes that from the times of the Cold War to those of the War on Terror, Pashtun identities have been clouded by the hegemonic discourses of the contesting global powers, leading to gaps and silences in their depiction in literature.This paper argues that the Pashtun images in contemporary Pakistani fiction in English exhibit strong influences of the dominating narratives; simultaneously, however, they seem to offer various patterns of subversion of the prevailing power narratives. Despite the fact that Pashtuns are generally regarded as the most subversive people of South Asia and that their lands have been regarded significant strategically as well as geographically, yet they are portrayed as the Others of the mainstream cultural discourses. This paper aims to highlight the contours of the socio-cultural and political valuation of Pashtuns in contemporary Pakistani fiction in English. ABSTRACT The present study is aimed to investigate the status of women in the novel The Wandering Falcon by Jamil Ahmed originally published in 2011. The Wandering Falcon is a collection of nine short stories. All the stories are interlinked with one another. The novel shows life in the tribal areas situated at the borders of Pakistan, Iran and Afghanistan. In the present study, the researcher has examined the impacts of tribal traditions and rules on the lives of the people of these region. The research deals with the cruel and brutal laws of Federally Administrative Tribal Areas (FATA) and the miserable life style of these tribal people, especially the women of the region, as depicted in the novel. The tribal people have to face the indifference of nature as well as the supremacy of society. The rules and regulations of society have a deep impact on the social, mental and psychological development of its members. The present study deals with the social status of women in these tribal areas. It describes the attitude of tribal customs and traditions toward women and reflects the impact of these brutal laws on the lives of women as well as the poor and suppressed class of the society.
