From celebrated masters of the Progressive Artists Group through to the biggest names in contemporary art, attractive estimates cross the spectrum of artists, styles and media with estimates ranging from £1,000 to £600,000. The sale has is expected to realise in excess of £2million. Highlights range from Ragamala Series, 1960 by Maqbool Fida Husain (b.1915) (estimate: £400,000- 600,000) illustrated top left and Untitled, circa 1966-67 by Tyeb Mehta (b.1925) (estimate: £80,000-120,000), to Red Carpet – 4, 2007-08 by Rashid Rana (b.1968) (estimate: £135,000-200,000) and Leap of Faith, 2005- 2006 by Subodh Gupta (b.1964) (estimate: £70,000-100,000) illustrated top right. Firstly it’s date, 1949, two years after the Indian Independence, during b 1926 which time artists reflected the hopes and aspirations of the newly independent country. Painting the daily life of people on the street in Untitled (The Procession of India and celebrating its rich variation and history in a progressive Saint Xavier, Goa), 1949 language. Gouache and ink on paper Pai uses both western and eastern techniques in this work, perhaps Signed and dated in Devanagari he was looking at Japanese woodblocks and prints as the figures are lower left deliberately flattened and foreshortened. However, the subject is an Indian scene, specifically a Goan scene, one that millions have seen. 68.8 x 42.9 cm 27 1/8 x 16 7/8 in The figures are lined up, running backwards and forwards across the sheet in a procession. They are wearing uniforms and carrying Provenance banners and flags emblazoned with Christian iconography. At the Private collection, Paris top of the composition one can see a body being carried. This is no ordinary procession but the procession of the body of the patron saint £ 35,000.00 of Goa, Saint Francis Xavier. He was a Jesuit priest and missionary who spread Christianity throughout Asia, as far as Japan. -

For Immediate Release August 14, 2007 Contact: Bendetta Roux 212 636 2680 [email protected] CHRISTIE’S HIGHLIGHTS MODERN AND CONTEMPORARY ART FROM SOUTH ASIA South Asian Modern and Contemporary Art September 20, 2007 New York – In its 7th New York year now and still as strong as ever, the South Asian Modern and Contemporary Art sale features prominently on the Christie’s Asia Week calendar. On September 20, the spotlights will once again shine on the works of India’s greatest 20th and 21st century artists. From the Progressive Movement through to cutting edge contemporary, the sale will not only focus on prime examples of many different movements and styles but will also make apparent the connecting lines and dots which link tradition with creation, the early 20th century revolutionary modern with the limit-pushing contemporary of tomorrow. The Progressive Movement cycle of artists is represented by major works of Mehta, Souza and Raza. Tyeb Mehta’s Mahisasura, 1996 (estimate: $750,000- 1,250,000) is part of the body of work which the artist embarked upon after he abandoned his expressionistic style and which have been characterized by a diagonal divide that allowed Mehta to use a single figure but adopt a different form on each side. Mahisasura is a far reminder of Mehta’s diagonal period and the painting’s subject matter is taken from Hindu mythology. However, in Mehta’s language, the original messages and figures are being transferred to a world of universal emotions and in Mahisasura, the divide really runs between the masculine and the feminine; between the divine and the mortal, between the bestial and the human. -

Exhibition of Contemporary Indian Art Royal Academy, London The Festival of India in Britain is designed to project "the spirit of India and her achievements" in all the areas of living experience which constitute and condition contemporary Indian society. Undoubtedly modern Indian art is a manifestation of this spirit. It forms a part of our environment as public art, the ceramic murals by Satish Gujral at the Delhi High Court and at Shastri Bhavan or as a repository of creative value representing the range of themes, approaches and individual modes of expression in the splendid collection of the National Gallery of Modern Art at Jaipur House, New Delhi. Profrssional galleries in Delhi, Calcutta, Bombay and Madras programme exhibitions of art right round the year presenting and promoting contemporary Indian art for their intrinsic aesthetic value as well as for their value as investment. There are at least fifty Indian artists today who sell their work at prices which are three times what they were ten years ago. Investment in contemporary art is also a matter of public interest and concern. The Tata Institute for Fundamental Research at Bombay, for instance, has an impressive collection of some of the finest works produced in recent years which make their presence felt to workers and visitors. With the National Exhibitions of Art, presented annually by the Lalit Kala Akademi, and the Triennale of International Art every three years as events of interest to the public, contemporary art is now not only an all-India proposition but also a link with the endeavours and expression of people the world over.
