FIGURES UP AT SALE TOPPED BY FLEMENSFIRTH A €62,000 son of Flemensfirth was the day’s star turn as yesterday’s latest edition of the Tattersalls Ireland February National Hunt Sale ensured that the 2018 sales season in Ireland got off to a bright start. Lot 187, Kenilworth House Stud’s Flemensfirth colt, who topped the day’s proceedings when knocked down to Glenvale Stud for €62,000.

The Glenvale Stud man’s purchase is the third foal out of the winning pointer Erins Stage (King’s Theatre), a full-sister to the dual Gr.3-winning staying chaser Theatre Guide. The second dam is the Listed-winning French jumper Erintante (Denel). This colt’s price eclipsed the €46,000 mark, which had been good enough to top the 2017 edition of this sale. “He’s a lovely horse, the King’s Theatre mare was an attraction and he has come from a very good farm,” declared Conroy. “The sire speaks for himself and this horse comes from a lovely jumping family, so we’re looking forward to bring him back for sale as a three-year- old.” LATE ENTRY SOLITA GOES TO RATHBARRY The day’s second highest price came from the small mares’ section, as Glenview Stud man Donal White went to €58,000 to see off Frank Motherway for the talented nine-year-old Solita (Lot 278A). The classy daughter of King’s Theatre was a seven- times winner on the track and her victories were headed by a Grade B success over fences. “She has been bought for Rathbarry Stud to go to our new stallion Karpino and he will be a nice cover for her. She’s a sweet mare who ticked all the boxes. She’s got size and scope, and she was a classy mare,” declared White. Earlier, the only Martaline yearling on offer failed to sell in the ring, but was later snapped up by Dick Frisby for €47,500. The April-born grey, Lot 126, skipped an intended engagement at the November Sale, but the wait was a worthwhile one for his connections. He was sold through Ballinaroone Stud for Patrick Fennessy, who had bought his dam when she was in training in France, and he hails from a successful and current family. The pedigree was further boosted last Saturday when the mare’s half-brother Agrapart (Martaline) notched up another big-race success in the Gr.2 Cleeve Hurdle at Cheltenham. This colt’s price was almost matched by Kieran Shields when he went to €46,000 for a son of the much missed Saddler Maker. The Padraic Donohoe-owned colt (Lot 261) is the fourth produce of a placed Marju full-sister to ’s Gr.3 victor Bobs Pride.
