Oakland looks to lock down spot in NCAA Tournament at Horizon League Championship detroitsportsnation.com/college-sports/amuller/oakland-looks-lock-spot-ncaa-tournament-horizon-league-championship/91281/ Alexander Muller 2/28/2017 Dec 23, 2016; Rochester, MI, USA; Oakland Golden Grizzlies head coach Greg Kampe during the game against the Georgia Bulldogs at Athletics Center O'rena. Mandatory Credit: Tim Fuller-USA TODAY Sports The Oakland Golden Grizzlies are not only the hottest team in the Horizon League at season’s end (winners of nine straight), but also on the country. And should they continue their hot streak this weekend at the Horizon League Tournament, they will punch their ticket to the dance and surely be a trendier pick for many when filling out their brackets. The final Horizon League Tournament held at Joe Louis Arena takes place starting this Friday, March 3. Thanks to a strong finish to the regular season, the Grizzlies clinched a share of the league title with Valparaiso and earned the No. 1 seed in the league tournament. So what’s been the biggest factors to Oakland’s success in 2016-17? The Grizzlies won ten of their 12 true road games this season, with losses coming at Michigan State (77-65 on 12/21) and at Wright State (88-67 on 01/22). That 83.3 road winning percentage ranks 6th nationally among teams who have played a minimum ten true road games this year. 1/3 Last year, Oakland had among the nation’s best offenses, led by All-American Kay Felder.

More than Kay Felder: Oakland thrives despite superstar’s early departure to NBA fanragsports.com/cbb/more-than-kay-felder-oakland-thrives-despite-superstars-early-departure-to-nba/ By Adam Biggers 12/20/2016 ROCHESTER, Mich. — Kay Felder’s decision to forgo his senior year and hop into the 2016 NBA Draft was supposed to be the beginning of the end for the Oakland Golden Grizzlies. The absence of one of the most exciting scorers in recent memory was supposed to leave Greg Kampe’s program in shambles this season, said critics. No Kay, no success, they said. They were wrong. Kay Felder is one of the greatest to ever play at Oakland, but the game at OU hasn’t stopped in his absence. Photo: Andy Shippy | FanRag Sports “I think we kind of have a group of guys who have a chip on their shoulder,” said Kampe, who’s seen progression with nearly every player. “When Kay announced that he was going into the NBA, everybody seemed to write our death warrant for this year. Our guys were kind of upset about that. They felt like we were a pretty good team last year, not just a single player…” One year ago, the offense revolved around Felder, who averaged 24.2 points per game — fourth-most in the nation — and led the country in assists, averaging 9.3 per game. On Dec. 22, 2015, Felder scored 38 points during Oakland’s 99-93 double-overtime loss to the then 15-0 and No. 1-ranked Spartans. He was so good that MSU coach Tom Izzo called the display one of the best ever at The Palace of Auburn Hills, the home of the Detroit Pistons and site of the game.

  • S Dorka Juhasz Named to WBCA All-Region Team
Ohio State’s Dorka Juhasz Named To WBCA All-Region Team Ohio State sophomore forward Dorka Juhasz has earned even more recognition, this time from the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association. Juhasz was one of 52 players recognized on the WBCA All-Region Teams, which will dwindle its list down to 10 players for an overall All-America Team on April 2. There are 10 players in Juhasz’s region, which includes eight total players from the Big Ten: Grace Berger (Indiana), Kaila Charles (Maryland), Kathleen Doyle (Iowa), Arella Guirantes (Rutgers), Juhasz, Naz Hillmon (Michigan), Ali Patberg (Indiana) and Lindsey Pulliam (Northwestern). The other two players in the region are Becca Hittner out of Drake and Chante Stonewall out of DePaul. The second-year forward led the Buckeyes with 13.2 points and 9.4 rebounds per game while shooting 47.6 percent (160 of 336) from the field and 39.6 percent (40 of 101) from three. The impressive stats were enough to get Juhasz on the First-Team All-Big Ten lineup, the only Ohio State player on the first or second team. After averaging a double-double in the four games in Indianapolis, Juhasz was also named to the Big Ten All-Tournament Team along with Hillmon, Patberg and Maryland’s Ashley Owusu and Stephanie Jones. Juhasz is looking to become the first Ohio State player to make the WBCA First Team since Kelsey Mitchell, who made it three times from 2016-18. Since the honor was created in 1975, seven different Buckeyes have made the first team a total of 15 times: Jantel Lavender (three times), Jessica Davenport (three times), Katie Smith (twice), Nikita Lowery, Tracey Hall (twice) and Franci Washington.
